From Elgo to American Godzilla. Hope we can see some videos about “weird American knockoffs”.

[–] tactical_trans_karen@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago

I was just thinking this. The US used to do a lot of shitty knockoff products that today would be associated with China.

[–] LocalOaf@hexbear.net 2 points 3 months ago

You can tell they're USAmerican because they're being used for the most uncreative, homogenous, suburban hellscape buildings possible.

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 14 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Gotta love that knock off ass name lol

[–] fahfahfahfah@lemmy.billiam.net 19 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Apparently these actually pre-dated Lego.

Yeah, Elgo had their stuff in 1941 (based on a wooden version made by Halsam in the 1930s called "American Bricks") while Lego started selling theirs in 1949.

Apparently they were shit, though. Boomers who had them complained they were hard to take apart.

[–] ElChapoDeChapo@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Nintendo also made their own version back when they were a toy company which I hear were difficult to pull apart too

You think there were kids in the 1890s who were so obsessed with Hanafuda some parents rolled their eyes and said “you and your nintendos”

What kind of Eldritch pact did the Danes make to figure out plastic toy bricks that don't suck

[–] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

They promised to never invade Ireland again

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 5 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

A pact with the Americans. I'm pretty sure it was some kind of Marshall aid programme that allowed the small provincial wooden toy maker to buy a modern plastic injection moulding machine after WWII.

[–] Horse@lemmygrad.ml 14 points 3 months ago

i wonder how much lead they managed to put in those

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 14 points 3 months ago

I see what they're doing there.

[–] BeanisBrain@hexbear.net 10 points 3 months ago (2 children)

for boys and girls

At least it's gender egalitarian

[–] CupcakeOfSpice@hexbear.net 8 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Well, egalitarian so long as you fit in the binary.

[–] BeanisBrain@hexbear.net 7 points 3 months ago

By 1950s America standards that's above the curve

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 6 points 3 months ago

American plastic bricks has gone woke and political!

[–] FnordPrefect@hexbear.net 9 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I can't decide if the child on the right is the ~~platonic~~ AMERICAN PLASTONIC ideal of ennui or is a vampire and is about to tear the other kids smug neck out...maybe both both-sides
