Yeah, Elgo had their stuff in 1941 (based on a wooden version made by Halsam in the 1930s called "American Bricks") while Lego started selling theirs in 1949.
Apparently they were shit, though. Boomers who had them complained they were hard to take apart.
Nintendo also made their own version back when they were a toy company which I hear were difficult to pull apart too
