Yeah the system makes no sense. I got dinged -12 points this week for some reason, apparently for continuing to pay my student loans on time and using my one credit card for the exact same purchases I always do, which I likewise always pay off each month automatically.

I've gotten dinged for not having enough accounts/credit lines.

My old car payment fell off last month, and I bought a car with cash (not a great car, but it was cheap) - now I'm in the "fair" zone.

But fuck me for not wanting a shitload of credit cards/loans, right?

It makes perfect sense when viewed from "the credit companies work with lenders to ensure your credit only rises if you're constantly in more and more debt but still paying it like an obedient little wage slave"

[–] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 21 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

This is the answer. I have no debt and pay my credit card off in full every month, automatically. Because of this, my credit score is mediocre. Economic slavery is always the goal.

I have no debt and pay my card in full every month too but I have amazing credit.

My oldest lines are nearly 20 years old at this point. Is it possible you just haven’t had any credit lines long enough?

[–] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 7 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

My oldest credit line is exactly 20 years old. I genuinely don't know why it isn't higher, but it doesn't affect me in any way, so I don't care

How much are you putting on your card each month? If it's a relatively low amount, that might be a contributing factor.

[–] dingus@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

To add to this, I found out that paying the statement balance before it's due harms your credit score. Because then when the statement comes out, it shows that you owe zero and this makes it seem like you're not using your card. At least, this has been my experience.

So, DO pay your full balance on time each month, BUT you need to wait for the statement balance to be generated before doing so.

Shit, I've had a credit score of 750 or more for years, and yet I can never get approved for any loans other than small, short-term ones like from a cash checking service to get an advance on a paycheck.

I was in a similar boat for the first few years out of college. Like, totally fine score, couldn’t even get a PayPal credit for under $1000 for some reason.

When I met my wife and we secured a credit union mortgage, everyone just started throwing credit at me. My score is sky high, so every account keeps raising my limit, which raises my score, etc. it’s all a bunch of bullshit.

The only crazy thing I noticed after getting married was how people speak to me when I wear the ring vs when I don't.

I still wear the ring even tho I am no longer married just because people are often friendlier when they see it.

What's with the wedding ring?

Helps strangers think I'm trustworthy.
