Alright I watched it.

Everyone calls Trump stupid but I completely disagree, he's got incredible instincts. He sees Zohran's popularity, he sees he's a winner, he sees the platforms he's pushing are popular and what he's looking to do here is use Zohran to attach himself to those platforms. He's pretending that he wants the same things Zohran wants.

What Trump really wants is to be popular, and he will attach himself to literally anyone that can deliver him popularity regardless of underlying ideology. If Zohran improves New York, Trump wants to be attached to that too.

I think if he thought the Democrats had a better chance at winning in 2016 he would have run as one instead and I'm not sure if that would be any better but it would certainly be funnier.

Woke Trump would've been weird af, how would he have behaved during blm in that case?

"Folks, the cops, they're nasty. Real nasty. I've been saying for years, 'we've got to rein in these cops.'"

Lmao @12:30:

...you said "trump is a fascist", are you reaffirming that statement?

"Well I uh.."

Trump: "It's fine, you can just say it, easier than explaining the whole thing" pats arm

Lmaoooo

Lmao again, someone transcribe 14:45 pls

If you're short on time its good to watch the wrap up @29:00 to get an idea about the whole thing

[–] sewer_rat_420@hexbear.net 72 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think that, to Trump, "communist" and "fascist" are just mean names to call a politician. So you know, call me a fascist, I'll call you a communist, its all in good fun at the end of the day as long as Trump gets to score points against the dem establishment and distract from Epstein.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 46 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's just like that thing about him funding Hillary that he handwaved away. Yeah, it's a big club and this is all theater. Who cares!

The whole thing is a lovefest, I'm cackling. Loved this bit @21:25 where Trump defends Mamdani from a pretty flimsy gotcha question:

REPORTER: Thank you, Mr. President. I have a question for you, but a very quick one for the mayor: why did you fly here? Aren't trains greener?
MAMDANI: [laughing] I will use every form of transit and I want to make sure that they're all affordable in New York City and that's why making buses fast and free is a centerpiece of our campaign.
TRUMP: [to reporter] Did you—
REPORTER: There is a bus that goes—
TRUMP: Well, but—I know but if he flew, that's a lot quicker, too. You know, I mean, he's—he's working very hard. For him to be—that's a long—that's a very that's a very long drive. [looking at Mamdani] I'll stick up for you [both smile, Mamdani nods]. You know, the plane takes you 30 minutes and driving takes you a long— [cut off by reporter's next question]

Among many other things, I think Trump feels some genuine camaraderie for someone who has been treated very unfairly by the media.

edit: another good bit @25:19

TRUMP: I tell you, the press has eaten this thing up. You know, I've had a lot of meetings with the heads of major countries. Nobody cared. This meeting that you people have gone cra—you know, outside you have hundreds of people waiting [briefly looks at Mamdani]. This is just a small little group. For some reason, the press has found this to be a very interesting meeting. The biggest people in the world, they come over from countries—nobody cares. But—[gestures at Mamdani] they did care about this meeting. And it was a great meeting.

Another great way to ingratiate yourself with Trump—get him a bunch of press! Dude was eating it up.

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 24 points 2 days ago (1 children)

True but also be should have taken the train

[–] marxisthayaca@hexbear.net 19 points 2 days ago (7 children)

Hot take: make the trains not suck

Lmao the massive grin on Trump's face during that exchange

[–] astronot@hexbear.net 33 points 2 days ago

Holy hell, I saw that clip of the fascist question a few minutes ago and assumed it was fake. IT WAS REAL?!?! Trump seems totally smitten with him. Did not expect that.

13:50 SOME REPORTER, OFF-SCREEN: The cost of living is something that you and Mr. Mamdani seem to agree on. Democrats have run New York City for a long time, Mr. Mamdani, Do you see Democrat policies specifically as being a problem and [stammering, but basically "I'd like both of you to answer"]

14:10 MAMDANI: Look I think that there are many things in our city where we have to own the responsibility of the things that have existed long before the president was the president and those are also part of the message of our campaign was to take on a broken politics of our past and I ran against a number of candidates which represented different versions of that past, and what we found time and again is that working people were left behind in the politics of our city and what we're looking to do is put those people right back at the heart of our politics so that we don't have a situation where we're in the wealthiest city in the history of the world and yet one in five can't even afford $2.90 for a metro card.

14:45 OFF SCREEN: Mr. President?

14:45 TRUMP: You know we had some interesting conversations and some of his ideas really have - the same ideas I have. But a big thing on cost - you know the new word is affordability, another word is just groceries. It's sort of an old fashioned word but it's very accurate. And they're coming down they're coming down. They were - You know we had both of us, we had the highest inflation in the history of our country the last four years under... [dramatic pause] the Biden administration. and we've got inflation down now to our normal numbers, it's going to go even lower than that.

That's roughly it. I transcribed it myself. Might have misplaced an article or changed a "are" to a "were" here or there. You get what you pay for :)

Also,

Donald Trump solidarity Will Stancil

"THE ECONOMY IS DOING FINE"

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 35 points 2 days ago (2 children)

"grosseries" it's sort of an old fashioned term

Had me rolling

[–] Ram_The_Manparts@hexbear.net 32 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I'm not impressed by this Mamdani guy at all, but this whole thing is so fucking hilarious that I'm willing to concede to our resident DSA radlibs that him getting elected might have been a good thing after all

Every clip I've seen so far has had me literally howling lmfao

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 29 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Its very comedic to see the establishment confront mild principles like a municipal grocery store and lowering rent prices

Chairman Mamdani met with President Trump in a historic meeting, no doubt the beginning of normalization of relations between the United States and the People's Republic of New York. Some experts have also begin speculating that the US will vote for the formal entry of the People's Republic of New York into the UN over the Republic of New York as the sole representative of New York.

[–] jack@hexbear.net 52 points 2 days ago

Only Trump could go to New York

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 38 points 2 days ago (4 children)

Some shitlib talking head was just on CNN saying how Trump loves communists more than americans

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 41 points 2 days ago (1 children)

They're mad that the communist can actually do the bipartisanship they always are hounding after.

"We have differences, but we both are motivated to look good, so let's focus on that" goes a whole lot farther than just tailing Trump's platform and talking points like a sad puppy for 10 years.

At the same time, imagine going ahead with meeting Trump. I get why he did, but ughhh

[–] haber@hexbear.net 28 points 2 days ago (1 children)

honestly it might be an effective strategy for keeping trump off his back, winning him over with a little charm.

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 25 points 2 days ago (5 children)

Sheinbaum has been effective with it

That's essentially their interpretation of Trump having more respect for people who stand tall and don't act like a lapdog, even if they're an adversary, than for your average Democrat who will lick his boots at the first opportunity.

Both of them have usurped the openly hostile establishments of the parties they currently represent through the power of charisma.

If a smile for the cameras keeps New York safe from the administration, and helps differentiate "socialists" from "democrats", then it's absolutely worth it.

[–] Clippy@hexbear.net 54 points 2 days ago (1 children)

i dunno gang, maybe trump being a third world Maoist wasn't just a shitpost speculation.

Trump: We had a mayor who wasn't doing a great job… it went pretty bad. I think he can bring it back. He wants to make it greater than ever before and if he can, I will be cheering for him.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 62 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (13 children)

Real talk though, here's my initial assumptions about what could've gone down here:

  1. Zohran capitulated on a bunch of stuff, promised that he won't rock the boat much and will slow down now he won the election
  2. Trump really does just trust the last person he talked with, and Zohran did a good job of just appearing like a smart and polite guy to get on Trump's good side
  3. The mere fact that Zohran spoke English fluently, used honorifics, and obviously wasn't a jihadist caught Trump off guard.
  4. Trump is in a weak spot right now because of all the bad press and he's desperate to leech off some good will from someone who is much more popular (i.e. the title of this post)

I initially was writing these as separate possibilities but now that I read them over, I think the most likely explanation is that some part of all 4 of these is true and that's why they were so unexpectedly conciliatory.

[–] LENINSGHOSTFACEKILLA@hexbear.net 43 points 2 days ago (6 children)

I'm almost certain its just that Trump is dumb and the fact that Mamdani is polite and well spoken.

My wife pointed out that, all political theater aside, Trump as corporation still has a lot of economic interest in NYC, especially real estate. So there’s a financial incentive for Trump to schmooze, set up for some favor trading to benefit him.

"Hey, you're a good looking guy. Everyone get a load of this fella, I think New York will be alright."

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 35 points 2 days ago

I stopped lurking at the most perfect moment. I'm walking out of work an hour early than usual reading this shit and as we get outside my friend who is very apolitical sees the tears literally streaming down my face.

It was also a very grueling day and he looked all worried and asked if I'm okay and I just started giggling like an idiot straining to get out the words "you wouldn't understand"

[–] sleeplessone@lemmy.ml 35 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Never thought I'd get so much mileage out of this image.

They just need to fuse now.

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 23 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Mamdanald would be their dbz fusion name when using the dance and Zorhump when it's the earrings.

Hey guys, I just got back from testing out my time machine! I didn't mess up the timeline or anything, did I? Anything seem, you know, different?

[–] CyborgMarx@hexbear.net 42 points 2 days ago

Finally, our plan to implement the US version of the 'One country, two systems' framework has born fruit, with the People's Republic of New York as our forward base xi-clap

[–] Civility@hexbear.net 22 points 1 day ago
[–] oscardejarjayes@hexbear.net 32 points 2 days ago

Mamdani is just so charismatic, he won over Trump like he won over New York

[–] ajab@hexbear.net 26 points 2 days ago

if trump gets kirked this will be cited by conspiracy theorists as proof that trump was undergoing a redemption phase that threatened powerful interest groups. Just as Kirk was apparently becoming anti-zionist before getting popped by mossad. They'll say, "Trump was beginning to follow the path of socialism with pan-islamic characteristics but fellas at the NY Stock Exchange weren't having it."

[–] NuraShiny@hexbear.net 35 points 2 days ago

Imagine standing next to Trump and not grabbing a pen and driving it into his eye.

[–] hellinkilla@hexbear.net 27 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Why is this happened?

Does the us president always do this for mayor elect?

Trump is treating him better than democrats do.
