Lmao @12:30:

...you said "trump is a fascist", are you reaffirming that statement?

"Well I uh.."

Trump: "It's fine, you can just say it, easier than explaining the whole thing" pats arm

Lmaoooo

Lmao again, someone transcribe 14:45 pls

If you're short on time its good to watch the wrap up @29:00 to get an idea about the whole thing

[–] sewer_rat_420@hexbear.net 72 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think that, to Trump, "communist" and "fascist" are just mean names to call a politician. So you know, call me a fascist, I'll call you a communist, its all in good fun at the end of the day as long as Trump gets to score points against the dem establishment and distract from Epstein.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 46 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's just like that thing about him funding Hillary that he handwaved away. Yeah, it's a big club and this is all theater. Who cares!

[–] ClathrateG@hexbear.net 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

ig it was a handwave but 'I'm rich I gave money to everyone' was a great mask off moment for those with eyes to see it

The whole thing is a lovefest, I'm cackling. Loved this bit @21:25 where Trump defends Mamdani from a pretty flimsy gotcha question:

REPORTER: Thank you, Mr. President. I have a question for you, but a very quick one for the mayor: why did you fly here? Aren't trains greener?
MAMDANI: [laughing] I will use every form of transit and I want to make sure that they're all affordable in New York City and that's why making buses fast and free is a centerpiece of our campaign.
TRUMP: [to reporter] Did you—
REPORTER: There is a bus that goes—
TRUMP: Well, but—I know but if he flew, that's a lot quicker, too. You know, I mean, he's—he's working very hard. For him to be—that's a long—that's a very that's a very long drive. [looking at Mamdani] I'll stick up for you [both smile, Mamdani nods]. You know, the plane takes you 30 minutes and driving takes you a long— [cut off by reporter's next question]

Among many other things, I think Trump feels some genuine camaraderie for someone who has been treated very unfairly by the media.

edit: another good bit @25:19

TRUMP: I tell you, the press has eaten this thing up. You know, I've had a lot of meetings with the heads of major countries. Nobody cared. This meeting that you people have gone cra—you know, outside you have hundreds of people waiting [briefly looks at Mamdani]. This is just a small little group. For some reason, the press has found this to be a very interesting meeting. The biggest people in the world, they come over from countries—nobody cares. But—[gestures at Mamdani] they did care about this meeting. And it was a great meeting.

Another great way to ingratiate yourself with Trump—get him a bunch of press! Dude was eating it up.

True but also be should have taken the train

[–] marxisthayaca@hexbear.net 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hot take: make the trains not suck

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 13 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Correct but the one HSR the US has runs from Madison Square Garden to the US Capitol building.

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Acela express yeah, could definitely be faster, but oh well

[–] ClathrateG@hexbear.net 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

ah didn't realise it opened in August, US was at 0 miles of hsr prior though?

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 6 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Acela (just barely HSR, but at least medium SR) has been running since 2000

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I would rather have a rail network that connects every metro area in the country than one single route of high-speed rail. Don't care if it's low-speed (50 mph is fine) as long as it exists.

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Sure but just saying any socialist traveling along the NE corridor is expected (by me) to take the train instead of fly since it exists already and takes around the same amount of time. There are valid reasons to drive (unfortunately).

(Actually train take 4 hours vs 1.5 hrs flight time, but the train is city center to city center with no security, airport has security, but it depends on if you're in queens or Manhattan maybe)

Lmao the massive grin on Trump's face during that exchange

[–] astronot@hexbear.net 33 points 2 days ago

Holy hell, I saw that clip of the fascist question a few minutes ago and assumed it was fake. IT WAS REAL?!?! Trump seems totally smitten with him. Did not expect that.

13:50 SOME REPORTER, OFF-SCREEN: The cost of living is something that you and Mr. Mamdani seem to agree on. Democrats have run New York City for a long time, Mr. Mamdani, Do you see Democrat policies specifically as being a problem and [stammering, but basically "I'd like both of you to answer"]

14:10 MAMDANI: Look I think that there are many things in our city where we have to own the responsibility of the things that have existed long before the president was the president and those are also part of the message of our campaign was to take on a broken politics of our past and I ran against a number of candidates which represented different versions of that past, and what we found time and again is that working people were left behind in the politics of our city and what we're looking to do is put those people right back at the heart of our politics so that we don't have a situation where we're in the wealthiest city in the history of the world and yet one in five can't even afford $2.90 for a metro card.

14:45 OFF SCREEN: Mr. President?

14:45 TRUMP: You know we had some interesting conversations and some of his ideas really have - the same ideas I have. But a big thing on cost - you know the new word is affordability, another word is just groceries. It's sort of an old fashioned word but it's very accurate. And they're coming down they're coming down. They were - You know we had both of us, we had the highest inflation in the history of our country the last four years under... [dramatic pause] the Biden administration. and we've got inflation down now to our normal numbers, it's going to go even lower than that.

That's roughly it. I transcribed it myself. Might have misplaced an article or changed a "are" to a "were" here or there. You get what you pay for :)

"grosseries" it's sort of an old fashioned term

Had me rolling

[–] Ram_The_Manparts@hexbear.net 32 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

I'm not impressed by this Mamdani guy at all, but this whole thing is so fucking hilarious that I'm willing to concede to our resident DSA radlibs that him getting elected might have been a good thing after all

Every clip I've seen so far has had me literally howling lmfao

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 29 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Its very comedic to see the establishment confront mild principles like a municipal grocery store and lowering rent prices

[–] PorkrollPosadist@hexbear.net 11 points 2 days ago

If your country doesn't have an entire toolbar for municipal grocery stores it is less sophisticated than Workers and Resources: Soviet Republic (which is a game).

[–] sempersigh@hexbear.net 19 points 2 days ago
