Step one:

Plug in a computer device into the first hdmi port.

Step two: Profit?

Or is it even more Invasive then this?

Some smart TVs also run content recognition algorithms on whatever input you give them, and upload it to the company servers who analyze it for profiling your interests. Maybe even sell that information for profit.

[–] SmackemWittadic@lemmy.world 46 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Yes, so you "plug computer into hdmi" and "do not connect TV to network of any variety"

[–] mech@feddit.org 39 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (3 children)

"Before you can use your device, please finish the setup process"
"Step 1: Connect to the internet"
[ ] OK
[X] Cancel

TV turns off

[–] Honytawk@feddit.nl 60 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Then you return that shitbox and complain that it does not function properly.

[–] Ludicrous0251@piefed.zip 41 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Easiest 1-star review: TV does not function without internet.

[–] fartographer@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

My 2-star review: Someone shit on this TV before returning it. I wanted to give the TV one star because it doesn't function without Internet. But I'm adding a star because that turd was fucking massive and it's pretty cool to shit on something like this before returning it.

[–] KazuyaDarklight@lemmy.world 12 points 2 months ago (1 children)

We shouldn't be forced to do these things, but connect it to a junk wifi signal setup using tethering or something and once setup is done, disable it.

[–] Scubus@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Itll ping a server. No server, no setup. Itll say it has to download software updates.

[–] webhead@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

Tether to a bullshit Wi-Fi name (like with your phone), finish setup, turn it off and never enable that particular name again. Or research if your TV is like that before you buy it and just don't buy it. But shit happens so you deal with what comes at you as it comes at you.

[–] KazuyaDarklight@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

There's always a niche instance but my example gives it a valid, but disposable, connection to complete setup, it can totally ping that server there at the beginning and give the all clear. And then you turn off that disposable Wi-Fi signal.

[–] 0x0@infosec.pub 3 points 2 months ago

Set up a temporary network from a phone and kill it as soon as the TV is satisfied, or even better, return it and tell them exactly why.

[–] toynbee@lemmy.world 14 points 2 months ago (5 children)

Apparently, if not configured for local WiFi, many smart TVs will attempt to break into any other SSID they can find - with no input from the user requesting that it do so.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Good thing routers use encryption by default out of the box these days.

[–] Clent@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 months ago

This is an urban legend.

[–] krooklochurm@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 months ago

Just shield your entire living space.

[–] racketlauncher831@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 months ago

Take it apart and roast the WiFi module.

I do sometimes wonder, if the tv isn't recording what I do on my pc.

Also, RTFM. It took me 5 years to realize that the reason HDR wasn't working on my tv, is because it only works if I plug my pc in to the third hdmi port.

[–] brillotti@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

Some smart TVs do perform content recognition on all input channels, but you should be safe as long as it doesn't connect to WiFi. See my other comment in this thread for more info.

[–] purplemonkeymad@programming.dev 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yea what is with the tv manufactures not making hdmi 1 the "feature" input. It makes no sense to me! Make 1 the best and sort the others to worst.

[–] Droechai@piefed.blahaj.zone 3 points 2 months ago

Maybe its a residue from "turn to channel 3 to see aux input"? Only halfway /s

[–] SchadeMarmelade@feddit.org 9 points 2 months ago (3 children)

As someone who doesn't own a smart tv, I believe I heard they even show ads as overlay on any input. As long as it is connected to the web, of course.

[–] fonix232@fedia.io 8 points 2 months ago

IIRC the ads (currently) are only done in the smart OS part of the TV, not the direct input.

[–] Honytawk@feddit.nl 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It can't download any ads nor invade your privacy if it doesn't have internet connection.

[–] RaccoonBall@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

so are you moving deep into the woods, or will you remove its antenna before turning it on?

[–] BeigeAgenda@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

No need for the woods, you never connect it to the network.

[–] Lifter@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 2 months ago

As others have pointed out: some TVs will connect to any open or low security wifi if none is configured.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

This is so gross.

[–] MissingGhost@lemmy.ml 26 points 2 months ago (2 children)

How long until they ship with their own always on 3G cellular antenna so it's always showing ads without any network setup?

[–] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 25 points 2 months ago (4 children)

Mesh network. Connect to neighboring TVs, at least one of them will have Internet

[–] lemmy_get_my_coat@lemmy.world 16 points 2 months ago

Easy now, Satan.

[–] cypherpunks@lemmy.ml 13 points 2 months ago

I don't know if it's on any TVs yet but in the US Amazon operates a LoRa and Bluetooth mesh network to allow various devices to get online through other people's internet-connected appliances such as their Ring and Echo products: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Sidewalk

[–] TipRing@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

Jokes on them, I don't even have cell service at my house and my neighbors are well outside typical range for a node.

[–] Trainguyrom@reddthat.com 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Mesh network is actually pretty plausible. I remember reading about Amazon smart devices creating a very slow mesh network with each other. Not sure if that was proof of concept or something they actively do (but I could see that being helpful for certain auto config things, if devices can talk to eachother out of band they can establish better assumptions about the target network that they're configuring for)

Edit: Amazon Sidewalk is what I was thinking of. Based on the devices it's on its pretty clearly intended for location tracking like for Tile competitors

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

jfc don't give them ideas

[–] Credibly_Human@lemmy.world 18 points 2 months ago

There are no possible justifications for this.

People who trot out about "subsidized" prices can take a hike, as the prices haven't gone down, and there arent options to not have this.

They want their cake and to eat it, and to shit in your mouth.

The first 2 weren't enough.

[–] ElectroLisa@piefed.blahaj.zone 15 points 2 months ago

Oop is an NFT shill

[–] io@piefed.blahaj.zone 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

here is a smart tv OS https://osmc.tv/ it's foss o think

also someone on reddit just put this on a resperry pi and blackholed the mac addresss of the smart tv on his router

[–] cassandrafatigue@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

They still do sampling/fingerprinting and shadow mesh networks to reach a connection.

Smart TV's should not be tolerated.

[–] Reginald_T_Biter@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago (5 children)

How does that work. That's horrifying.

I’ve never done Business social in any serious capacity. Do platforms really not have an Enterprise feature to internally report who posted something?

[–] m4xie@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 months ago

Twitter fucked up the API after Musk bought it, but you could at least have employees copy posts into a spreadsheet.

I think this is fake, though. I don't have a Twitter amount, so I'm not going to check.

Twitter used to, but disabled it.
