Lathing Hades II or Silksong winning GOTY just to stick it to AAA

[–] WalrusDragonOnABike@reddthat.com 13 points 1 month ago

Also wanting one of those two to win, despite having played none of the games on the list, just because I enjoy watching people run those games.

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 29 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I hope expedition 33 wins only so that streamer that told people to not vote for it gets angry

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 25 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I'm not even going to ask who that streamer is. All Gamers must suffer

[–] Thordros@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago

Whichever one you picture in your head, you're probably right.

Big year for AAA foot-fetish-type games

i am today years old just realizing the GOTY thing is separate from steam awards..

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 29 points 1 month ago (3 children)

Yeah, The Game Awards is just the Geoff Keighly Smile-Time Variety Hour

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago (2 children)

At least there's some consistency.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago

True

We get some trailers, we get a performance, awards are awarded

Hideo Kojima will probably show up and tease the Death Stranding movie

Standard fare

[–] WokePalpatine@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago

WORLD PREMIERE

[–] abc@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

it's the only place the Muppets are still respected and given a platform please put respect on Geoff Keighly's Smile-Time Variety Hour heckle

GoTY is just somebody that I used to know

[–] WalrusDragonOnABike@reddthat.com 18 points 1 month ago

Lots of groups do GOTY, among other common categories: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_in_video_games

[–] ClimateStalin@hexbear.net 20 points 1 month ago

Been playing Hades II recently, it’s good folks

Tough year. Hard to call it between Hades 2, Silksong and Clair Obscur

[–] Are_Euclidding_Me@hexbear.net 20 points 1 month ago

Hey, I've actually, for once, played a GOTY nomination during the year it's nominated for! (Silksong, of course it's Silksong.) That has never happened to me before!

[–] LENINSGHOSTFACEKILLA@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago (2 children)

expedition 33 seems most likely to me, but silksong could take it.

[–] lil_tank@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago

I think Silksong being too difficult will cost it the title. Artistically I'm 100% on board but when even Hollow Knight completionists found it harsh it's not going to be appreciated by enough people to make it to the top

Clair Obscur is pretty good, I've been playing it lately and it's rather addictive. I do find the dodge/parry system to be frustrating at times, though. I wish the timing was just a tad more forgiving and legible. I love Elden Ring and I can dodge fairly consistently when playing it, but in Clair Obscur the dodge/parry windows are much harder to read.

I don't know how to explain how I feel about it. The impression I get is that Elden Ring's windows feel somehow more tactile and weighty, like you can "feel" much better when an enemy is about to attack, even during feints and long wind-ups.

Other than that, it's a pretty enjoyable game, with AAA-level production values and an intriguing setting and story. That's the only one from the list I have played so far.

[–] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 16 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

haven't played either game but i know what you mean, some devs just have extra sauce on their animations in a way that's hard to articulate but very easy to "feel"

[–] fox@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago

There's an audio cue for when to parry or dodge for every attack, once you notice it and learn the timing window you can pretty much guarantee a perfect parry with your eyes closed, every time. After that it's just not letting yourself get faked out and remembering the combo sequences of a couple of faster enemies.

[–] MolotovHalfEmpty@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I swear I'm the only person in the world that absolutely hated Clair Obscura (although that wasn't entirely the game's fault).

[–] Parzivus@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago

I enjoyed it but it's very overhyped, not GOTY at all

[–] abc@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago

I personally really hated everything past Act 2

spoilerthe ending especially with the choices being 'millions must die to save one family' and 'oh you didn't want the sentient people to die?? well fuck you you chose wrong' lol (I chose Verso first playthrough btw but felt really bad about it & thought 'ok maybe Maelle's will be better' and no)

[–] towhee@hexbear.net 16 points 1 month ago

It is kind of sad that I have time to play at most one or two of these games in a year (this year, only silksong). I still haven't even played Elden Ring ffs.

[–] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 15 points 1 month ago

Silksong for sure but KCD2 is also pretty good

[–] ClassIsOver@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago

I've only played one of these, and it definitely wasn't the sort of game with wide consumer appeal, so I doubt it's going to win. Hopefully one day I'll get to play Expedition 33.

[–] Cowbee@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago

My personal GotY will be Silksong, though Clair Obscur is also good from what I've played. Haven't played the others on the list.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

As long as Kingdom Come doesn't win, I will be fine

Expedition 33 clears. Hades 2 was great but as a sequel it wasn't as novel as expedition 33. Didn't play the others but they're all sequels so I think that also applies to the rest of them.

[–] Cowbee@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Silksong is a sequel, but is such a refinement and expansion on what made Hollow Knight so good that I think it wins out. I'm about 25% through Clair Obscur though, so maybe it picks up more later, but it has a good deal to go for me personally.

[–] Monk3brain3@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

All I'll say is that expedition 33 is a wild fucking ride

Silksong I didn't play because I just don't have the hand eye co-ordination for more intense games but I know it's an amazing game just from the little I've seen

It's a tossup between E33 and Silksong for me. Both 10/10 and I can't rank em

[–] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

From what I've heard DK banaza is everything odyssey was supposed to be

[–] CommunistBear@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago (2 children)

The only game on this list that I've played is Hades 2 and it has thoroughly infected my brain in a way that only Hades 1 has. Idc if it wins or not, it is far and away the best game of the year for me

EUV is pretty good for a paradox release, but that's for a paradox release lol.

There's still a lot of issues to fix, and balancing to do.

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago (4 children)

Paradox games should be automatically disqualified. If your game only becomes "Good" around the fifth DLC release (Out of 20 or more) and you are expected to get your hands on all of them, that's not good.

Death Stranding 2 is the objectively wrong choice because this is the first time I'm hearing that game even came out, lmao. Extremely weak considering how hyped the first game was.

Objectively correct choice is Silksong due to the sheer hype around its release alone.

(and for the record, I don't play Nintendo games but it was very easily noticeable that Bananza came out. DS2 left absolutely no impact by comparison)

I don't think any of these games are really game of the year but then again this was a pretty mid year.

Praying Death Stranding 2 takes it because, while not really an insane improvement over the original - I enjoyed it the most out of any of the six nominees and I think it would make the E33 and Silksong fans the angriest. Like Silksong is arguably only up there because 'Silksong announcement!!' meme at every announcement stream for the past 7 years
