Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

there really has to be some rule or some AP style guidance where you can't have the adjective "explosive" for the noun "dump" in a headline.

i mean, come on.

[–] yogthos@lemmygrad.ml 36 points 5 months ago

I'm sure somebody waited a long time to write that headline

We're t-mius 2 weeks out from the gop platform shifting to "um, well, actually pedophilia is good and natural for men" and qanon will be quietly swept under the rug and memory holed.

We're t-mius 2 weeks out from the gop platform shifting to "um, well, actually pedophilia is good and natural for men" and qanon will be quietly swept under the rug and memory holed.

Matt Walsh already primed the base for this with his "ideal child rearing age" christofascist shit

Fuck, at this point, the GOP could institute Prima Nochta for Trump and get away with it.

[–] 30_to_50_Feral_PAWGs@hexbear.net 2 points 5 months ago

The Democrats already instituted Klaatu Barada Necktie, which is why so many of them are Deadites

Even some Republicans are releasing these things. Not looking great for Trump. Unfortunately this country made it illegal for anything bad to happen to the President ever, which was a pretty stupid thing to do.

About the legal expert...

Ryan Goodman, a law professor and co-editor-in-chief of Just Security, discussed the documents on CNN's "Erin Burnett OutFront."

"These are explosive," Goodman said.

Goodman is a social media law brain. Such liberal "experts" have been giving their takes that the Laws will take Trump down since halfway through Trump 1.0. "Explosive" is a new term. I'll add it to my list.

The walls are closing in

  • It's the beginning of the end.
  • The other shoe is about to drop.
  • The walls are closing in.
  • This is a bombshell.
  • This is a tipping point.
  • This is a turning point.
  • Trump is in trouble.
  • Trump's having a bad week.
  • Trump's having an awful week.
  • Trump's luck has run out.

Trump is going to face consequences for his actions around the same time that China's entire economy collapses

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 15 points 5 months ago (3 children)

I was already tired of "legal expert" in headlines around 2018 because I was on Reddit all the time then and such posts were a r/politics staple. The articles were effectively clickbait because they were only the opinion of one person. But the headlines were copy-and-paste acceptable for that sub's rules. The clickbait might get 10+K upvotes while a far more sober but accurate and factual article about the situation might get 300 upvotes.

I think I went to r/politics once this year for a couple minutes. I just made another visit. A similarly titled article is at ~3K.

Donald Trump "may not outlast" Epstein files scandal: Legal analyst (newsweek.com)

It's the fifth most popular article. Of the top five - four have "Epstein" in the title. In fact - when I scrolled down I saw it was crazy. The entire homepage is Epstein city. Libs are going to be so sad and frustrated when all of this comes to naught.

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 16 points 5 months ago

I don't think libs will care. They'll tut about it, do nothing, whine about it over brunch, and then get back to ignoring their material reality

[–] sewer_rat_420@hexbear.net 11 points 5 months ago (1 children)

This is true, he won't outlast it because he is already on deaths door.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 11 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago) (1 children)

My favorite comment from Trump 1.0 happened when I was arguing with a lib for the nth time. I realized I should have simply stopped talking 2 if not 3 comments before. I wasn't going to convince them of my POV and vice versa.

So - I'm being an idiot. Again. Somebody is wrong on the net. So what! I'll end the convo on a form of detente and a positive note. I said that maybe Trump will have a massive heart attack and die and we'll be rid of him. Their reply really surprised me. They said they absolutely did not want that! They wanted Trump to go on trial and be held accountable!

I just had to laugh.

[–] sewer_rat_420@hexbear.net 7 points 5 months ago

Unfortunately, 99.9% of war criminals won't face accountability on this earth. I don't believe in hell but...it's nice to think about these ghouls in excruciating pain for eternity

jk, 30-40% of the country won't believe the evidence and another 30-40% won't give a shit either way.

[–] Rom@hexbear.net 7 points 5 months ago* (last edited 5 months ago)

Yeah unless anyone is actually going to do anything about it why should I give a shit. Dems are gonna wag their fingers then try to impeach him over some other dumb bullshit

[–] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 15 points 5 months ago

The most that's going to come out of this is that absolute banger of a headline.

[–] Lussy@hexbear.net 13 points 5 months ago

It’s great that we’ve litigated pedophilia out in the open so that when nothing comes we’ve normalized diddling kids
