Dennis pregger

[โ€“] ameancow@lemmy.world 11 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago) (1 children)

Reminder people: Dennis Prager was injured in a fall in 2024 and is now paralyzed from the shoulders down and has been suffering greatly. It would be EXTREMELY distasteful to delight in progress and victories for marginalized groups, as well as scientific advances in biology that gives benefits to such groups while he is literally forced to sit and watch for the remainder of his likely short life.

I mean, it would be like rubbing it in his face that his God didn't protect him and between him and what's happened to other major conservative figureheads like Jordan Peterson and of course Charlie Kirk, it might even shake his faith entirely if he were to see the world moving on and none of his predictions and proclamations coming to pass about divine judgement against LGBTQ+ people while he languishes in a wheelchair and a device to keep him breathing.

edit: also, while a female nurse literally keeps him alive, that must really feel awkward after he promoted how a women's place is for childbearing and nothing else.

I had no idea Dennis Prager was paralyzed and living in constant pain. You just made my day.

[โ€“] ameancow@lemmy.world 7 points 18 hours ago

I don't know if his pain is mental or physical, but when I saw him on an interview he seemed in pretty rough shape and talking a lot about the end of his life. Becoming quadriplegic is a massive risk to your lifespan and he's already pretty old and in bad shape. We're going to send him lots of thoughts and prayers. Tons even.

Still requires a female to carry the eggs to term. I won't be impressed until Schwarzenegger's Junior becomes a reality.

[โ€“] theneverfox@pawb.social 14 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

It also requires an egg, just with the nucleus removed

We've done similar things before, these mice have 3 parents. The mitochondria come from the maternal line and have their own DNA

[โ€“] SanctimoniousApe@lemmings.world 6 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (2 children)

It's been a long time (literally multiple decades) since I was taught this stuff, and it's been forgotten due to disuse. Are you saying there's still maternal DNA in the offspring, or just in the environment that nurtures them until birth?

I did mention the eggs, BTW - I doubt that aspect can be avoided.

[โ€“] theneverfox@pawb.social 5 points 14 hours ago

Mitochondria are specialized mini-cells

They have their own DNA like bacteria, just floating around inside their membranes. They undergo their own mitosis inside the cell, some cells can have hundreds of them

And they always come from the egg. They're purely maternal

[โ€“] GreyEyedGhost@lemmy.ca 6 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (1 children)

Mitochondria have DNA. Mitochondria are passed from mother to child through the egg. The egg used in the scenario would have mitochondrial DNA from the mother mouse. All of what would typically be called mouse DNA came from the two male mice. So, technically DNA from the maternal line, but only mitochondrial DNA, not mouse DNA.

Edit: ah, autocorrect.

[โ€“] SanctimoniousApe@lemmings.world 1 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Thank you for the response, but I guess this will require some research on my part to understand. Biological sciences were never my thing, I'm afraid.

[โ€“] GreyEyedGhost@lemmy.ca 2 points 20 hours ago

Like most things, it's pretty simple from the far view. But there are a lot of details, much of which scientists are still trying to figure out.

The short version is, mitochondria, those powerhouses of the cell, have their own DNA, just like some bacteria. They do their own living, dividing, and dying, and have their own lineage. When a cell splits, some of the mitochondria go to each cell. So the mitochondrial DNA will be inherited from whoever donated the cell, or egg in this instance. So the lineage of the mitochondria would be related to the mitochondria of the egg donor and any other offspring she had, but the DNA in the nucleus, the mouse DNA, wouldn't be related to her.

...and that opens the door to mitochondrial diseases, all of which are pretty terrible.

The m in mpreg stands for mouse

[โ€“] MalReynolds@slrpnk.net 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

FFS, just adopt, it's way to needed anyway.

[โ€“] CoolThingAboutMe@beehaw.org 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

From what I've heard adopting is actually very difficult and arduous. There's way more families trying to adopt an infant than there are infants that can be adopted

[โ€“] howrar@lemmy.ca 1 points 9 hours ago

Keyword: infant

[โ€“] Una@europe.pub 12 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Now scientists need to find out a way to make wpreg real. (It is like a mpreg, but women get pregnant but I am not sure how would that work )

I'd direct you to some pron sites, but they tend to use the wrong orifices a lot which would probably confuse things further.

It's crazy that they made an emoji for fictional wpreg

Wait until we will learn how to create humans without other humans.

[โ€“] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 14 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

So far, most humans have been created without me, so it's not much of a stretch, honestly.

[โ€“] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 1 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Thanks. I did make two, for the record. If anyone is tracking.

Always good to have a spare.

[โ€“] callyral@pawb.social 7 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Step 1: create the universe

Step 2: wait like 13 to 14 billion years

Step 3: if you've made humans, congrats. if you haven't, try again

[โ€“] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago

If it seems like nothing has happened, congrats! If you've made humans, maybe cooking just isn't for you and that's totally okay?
