Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

It's pretty interesting to me that a Republican president is spending his honeymoon period dramatically raising taxes, but media doesn't frame it that way.

[–] danisth@hexbear.net 60 points 6 months ago (2 children)

It’s almost like a regressive tax that will primarily hurt the lower classes is 100% aligned with the capitalist class’s interests and the media is spineless.

I don’t know how to do emoji replies (boomer) so please imagine a shocked pikachu here (young-coded, relatable)

You can do them by clicking on the little smiley face above the comment and searching for the one you're looking for, or you can use colons : and then with no space type in what you're looking for, a list of options should pop up (though it doesn't sometimes) and you can select from that.

[–] onwardknave@hexbear.net 24 points 6 months ago

spineless.

complicit.

me and my boys all take generics.

but anyway, aren't like all of the drugs manufactured not in the US anymore?

its kinda hilarious that the foundational centerpiece of the TPP was to keep drug licensing and manufacturing infrastructure of SE Asia and India firmly under the economic control of the US, and here Trump is just giving them every reason to strategically reorient toward China/Belt & Road integration.

once again, JDPONDON strikes deep into the heart of american empire.

There are plenty of brand name drugs that are extremely useful and common. Eliquis, Xarelto, Jardiance, Januvia, all of the GLP-1s. That's just off the top of my head. This has the potential to explode drug prices for seniors, diabetics, people at risk for strokes and heart attacks, etc.

I do not think brand name drugs should even exist but that is the reality of it.

"Thank God it's not actually a tax though." - Republicans for some reason

[–] Speaker@hexbear.net 6 points 6 months ago

So excited to die because there's no generic insulin.

[–] Sulvy@hexbear.net 23 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Viagra and Cialis are both available generic

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 15 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Where's it manufactured though

[–] Sulvy@hexbear.net 8 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Doesn’t matter, they are no longer patented or branded. Read the article.

[–] Test_Tickles@hexbear.net 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

doesn't it matter tho? if a generic medication is made outside of the US, it will be impacted by tariffs

[–] Philosoraptor@hexbear.net 5 points 6 months ago (1 children)

First sentence of the article:

The U.S. will impose a 100% tariff on “all any branded or patented Pharmaceutical Product” entering the country from Oct. 1.

[–] Test_Tickles@hexbear.net 2 points 6 months ago

Ah the sentence about generic drugs becoming unprofitable or going bust confused me

She added that there are “a lot of generic drugs specifically that could potentially have to make decisions between being unprofitable and pulling from the market entirely.”

Where's the majority of the world's estrogen and testosterone manufactured?

[–] SteamedHamberder@hexbear.net 6 points 6 months ago (2 children)
[–] MLRL_Commie@hexbear.net 4 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Calling all cis to become the means of production for estrogen and testosterone. Liberate our trans comrades from the tyranny of capitalist owned factories, become the benevolent petit bourgeois, put your gonads to good use.

[–] dragongloss@hexbear.net 3 points 6 months ago

I'll have to visit sometime!

[–] TheDeed@hexbear.net 2 points 6 months ago

Fash leadership can afford it.

They're not going to attack themselves... at least not on purpose.

[–] Xiisadaddy@lemmygrad.ml 53 points 6 months ago (3 children)

Trumps like base of support is elderly white people. If he cuts off their supply of drugs a significant portion of those people are gonna croak. This seems like really bad planning even for him.

[–] XxFemboy_Stalin_420_69xX@hexbear.net 37 points 6 months ago (1 children)

nah the whole animating idea behind trump II's domestic policy is eugenics so this fits in perfectly with that. he knows that as long as he keeps demonizing immigrants and brown people on the other side of the world, his base are too racist and stupid to ever stop supporting him, no matter how much damage he does directly to them and their living conditions

[–] Xiisadaddy@lemmygrad.ml 20 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I mean totally true but also dead people can't vote

he's either gonna follow Electoral Norms and not run in 2028, or he's not gonna follow Electoral Norms and nobody will be voting in 2028. either way it doesn't matter to him

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 33 points 6 months ago

If COVID killing 1.2 million people (and counting) didn't do it I doubt this will.

[–] SteamedHamberder@hexbear.net 10 points 6 months ago

And a month before state elections.

[–] SacredExcrement@hexbear.net 50 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

Wow I'm sure this will help medical costs and will in no way just be used as an excuse for pharmaceutical companies to charge even more.

It's definitely not gonna do what all of the other tariffs have done and just make things more expensive while companies choose to keep their existing supply chains and networks.

[–] FloridaBoi@hexbear.net 22 points 6 months ago (1 children)

This increases GDP though!

[–] SacredExcrement@hexbear.net 6 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Running for president on a platform of a 2000% tariff with the stated goal of increasing GDP

[–] Coolkidbozzy@hexbear.net 47 points 6 months ago

Maybe I’ll finally hit my deductible

[–] abc@hexbear.net 21 points 6 months ago

surely my insulin will not cost like $300 since it is manufactured in Denmark by Novo Nordisk. surely it won't be right...right....Mr. President right

[–] VibeCoder@hexbear.net 20 points 6 months ago

What an ignorant fucking asshole. Why not a 300% tariff on food while you’re at it?
