Social Security Administration (SSA) commissioner Frank Bisignano has not ruled out raising the retirement age to help shore up the payment system's solvency.

Speaking on Fox's Mornings with Maria on Thursday, Bisignano, who was appointed by President Donald Trump earlier this year, said "I think everything's being considered" when asked by host Maria Bartiromo if he would look at raising the retirement age.

A spokesperson for the SSA told Newsweek that Bisignano "outlined that there are a whole host of items being considered and that eight years is a long way away. While he did say that 'everything will be considered,' it was after a much more insightful conversation regarding solvency and how Commissioner Bisignano is making the Social Security Administration easier to access, faster to respond, and better prepared to meet the challenges of tomorrow."

It makes sense to raise the retirement age if longevity is increasing, but longevity in America is actually decreasing. If anything, we should be lowering the retirement age.

There is no need to do anything to Social Security except raise the income cap from the current $168K, to $250K or $500K or higher. That will solve all of the problems for decades. Sure, a few people will have to pay SS taxes on a larger percentage of their income, but I pay SS taxes on 100% of my income, so they get no sympathy from me.

Remove the income cap altogether

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 45 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Or we could just go back to traditional values and have a 90% tax rate for the super wealthy like in the 50s

[–] MonkeMischief@lemmy.today 3 points 15 hours ago

They want to be socially 1950's, and fiscally 1980's. =\

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's hilarious that the good-ol' days they talk about wanting to go back to were built on the most sweeping socialist policies we've ever enacted, that were so popular they had to put a cap on getting reelected.

The good 'ol days to them are the pre trust buster era... They sell their base on the post New Deal era.

[–] Joeffect@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago

No, no... not like that... we just want the slaves and the racism and women to stay home, making babies... thats the great part

Lol my coworker was recently going on about how Trump was going to lower the retirement age.

Doubt he'll ever see this news though.

[–] THB@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You can make sure he does!

You don't even have to rub it in his face. Act like you forgot. The hardest part of talking with MAGA is proving them wrong (easy) without making them look like idiots. If you make them look like idiots they'll just run away crying to the MAGAnet and get reassurance they're not idiotic but need to put even more faith into Trump.

the gop have ben talking about raising it, where is he hearing it going lower. fox isnt reporting that.

[–] Blackfeathr@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

No idea where he got it from. Probably hearing some erroneous shit on social media.

everything's being considered

I have a suggestion: a wealth tax on the ultra rich.

Let's start with removing the cap on contributions. That would fund for the foreseeable future.

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That's just how he answers any question he doesn't have an answer for. The press hasn't figured it out yet.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

But have you considered:

What have you done for Mr. Trump lately?

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

He seems like such a nice man, I think he deserves to enjoy a nice quiet retirement somewhere where no one can bother him. I've been encouraging my Congress people to work toward that end.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 day ago

Be careful, Gavin Newsom recently tweeted that Kristi Noem was gonna have a bad day (in reference to CA passing a law that makes it illegal for ICE to wear masks)...

... and the response from the admin was that the secret service is now investigating Newsom as a potential threat to Noem's life.

Hyper Fascist Overdrive has been engaged.

[–] aeternum@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 day ago

a wealth tax on the ultra rich.

lol

[–] aramis87@fedia.io 5 points 1 day ago

The ultra-rich deserve to be taxed, especially in those cases where a billion dollars is just a rounding error.

[–] apenstaartje@lemmy.cafe 43 points 1 day ago

I’d like to see it raise to 90, that way we can get rid of some of the Trump voters.

Those boomers need to pull up those bootstraps, sell their houses, cash in their 401k, and get back to work.

[–] blattrules@lemmy.world 22 points 1 day ago

Anything to avoid taxing the rich.

[–] melsaskca@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

More tax dollars for his coffers and his world buddies.

[–] salacious_coaster@infosec.pub 16 points 1 day ago

Whatever. We'll have +3C warming before I get to the current retirement age.

[–] StupidBrotherInLaw@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Wait, you lot still think you'll be allowed to retire?

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Given ageism, and removal of all protections and civil rights, yes we’ll all be retired. Whether we can afford to or not

[–] SGGeorwell@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

A fucking lazy nepo bully is going to make everyone work more years of their lives? There is no justice.

Just as life expectancy stops increasing in the US, great. Plus the highest expectancy is for rich people, the ones who work will die before they hit the age limit after paying in the whole time.

[–] AA5B@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

eight years is a long way away

No, it most definitely is not. Putting it off until the last minute just means the impact will hurt. We should have adjusted a decade or more ago, for no noticeable impact.

better prepared to meet the challenges of tomorrow.”

I thought 8 years was a long way away. Which is it? Prepared for the future or not?

[–] Garbagio@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

Yeah, and I COULD take a shit next week. Anyone who didn't know this was coming is a fucking fool.
