Imagine Elon Musk lying about what his tech can do

Looking into it

[–] Lussy@hexbear.net 28 points 4 months ago (1 children)

10 billion? I thought investors wanted to hear believable lies?

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 26 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Not in tech. Just look at the LLM boom, or Theranos.

[–] Lussy@hexbear.net 19 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Idk even thernaos’ blood magic proposals sounded more sincere than ‘i’m going to sell exactly a bazillion in 5 years’

[–] fox@hexbear.net 27 points 4 months ago (1 children)

He's lying obviously, but the lie that he's going to produce 650 million of these things every year is particularly egregious. Like, the global car industry can make 100 million cars in a year and he's saying Tesla alone will build 6x more robots than that.

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 16 points 4 months ago (1 children)

melon-musk but have you considered I will make the robots make robots to make robots. Checkmate atheists

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 20 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Its no wonder his company is worth trillions when they can spout bullshit like 10 billion units. There aren't even that many fridges or tv screens or other house hold appliances and those have been around for long data-laughing

[–] Rom@hexbear.net 10 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

idk there's probably been 10 billion fridges and 10 billion TVs produced by now. No fucking way he's going to sell 10 billion robots at half a million a pop though, that's a pure ketamine-fueled delusion.

The things are bad at factory work and manual labor so they have to stuff them with LLM horseshit. They hope that if it can talk they can con government agencies, school systems, hospitals, etc into buying them because they can walk around and field questions from people. But they suck at that too because they have all the limitations of any other LLM.

*And by con into buying I mean pre-ordering vaporware and waiting 5-10 years for the first order to ship. by then it's a stripped-down pole on wheels with an Ipad duct-taped to it.

[–] dat_math@hexbear.net 15 points 4 months ago

he still claims they'll sell 666,666,666.666.... units every year starting 9 months ago?

[–] FnordPrefect@hexbear.net 11 points 4 months ago

least obvious musk fabrication

I know someone who does robotics at Amazon, and they tell me their in-house robots are really fucking stupid. They have folders and folders of images where they’ve made ridiculous mistakes that circulate around teams. A lot of them need very clear instructions constantly fed to them through visibly clear floor directions/floor lines/floor QR codes. And these deal with general transportation of neatly shaped objects with the occasional claw machine thrown in. To even conceive that we’re going to get fine tuned robots paired with hallucinating LLMs is both hilarious and terrifying because if they ever do get the fine tuning, you’re going to get I robots who are sprinting home not for an inhaler but for a gun. But hey let’s look forward to them funding mental health services for AI before they do for humans. In a way that’s already the case today I guess

Elon Musk claims will sell 10 billion units by 2040

Just like we're gonna have fully self driving cars next year and be on Mars in 5 years right?

[–] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 4 points 4 months ago

Hey, we've got FSD. Now safe FSD, he didn't promise that.

[–] CrawlMarks@hexbear.net 9 points 4 months ago (1 children)

I wanna see one of the Chinese robots they have programed to box just lay into one of these

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 4 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Despite the massive improvements in robotics in the last 20 years, we've had distressingly few new seasons of Robot Wars.

[–] CrawlMarks@hexbear.net 3 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

The sport continues. I see clips occasionally. I don't know how the leagues are organized but they have robots with deployable drones sometimes now.

[–] wolfinthewoods@hexbear.net 1 points 4 months ago

Damn deplorable drones

[–] GrouchyGrouse@hexbear.net 9 points 4 months ago

So is the real long term plan to use the giant pile of inevitably broken robots to reach Mars?

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 22 points 4 months ago (1 children)

White man's natural instinct to enslave other creatures

[–] CrawlMarks@hexbear.net 14 points 4 months ago

That's why he gave the robot a black face

[–] axont@hexbear.net 9 points 4 months ago

Yeah I've always wondered this. Treads would be vastly more efficient and the robots wouldn't fall over as much.

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 5 points 4 months ago

Yeah like it having hands makes sense but it really should have treads or four legs or something

[–] Thordros@hexbear.net 5 points 4 months ago

Why's it walk like it just shit its pants?

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 5 points 4 months ago

10 billlion units? I don't think there are enough rare earth elements on the planet to build 10 billion of these things, let alone sell them.

Is this really what the entire western economy is now? Tech companies saying the first big number they can think of and stockholders happily clapping like seals?

[–] Flyberius@hexbear.net 4 points 4 months ago

Didn't he claim these things were meant to cost 30k or something?

[–] VHS@hexbear.net 4 points 4 months ago

If Elon Musk can't figure out how to score some coke what can he do?
