game is really cool

piracy is fine. i think the indie/aaa divide is an artificial cope designed to inject a sense of moral discernment where it doesn't belong.

it's probably goty so imo if you can support a guy for making his magnum opus do it but otherwise like, there are more important things than lawful commerce for lots of people right now

[–] Comrade_Mushroom@hexbear.net 36 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I also think that there's a really, REALLY vast difference between an indie game with 1-3 people working on it out of a living room and an "indie" game where it's up to 50 people working out of an office with the marking+translation+accessibility+QA+etc. support of a major triple-A corporation.

[–] EllenKelly@hexbear.net 5 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Indi? You mean petite bourgeois, smol lil guy.

stardew valley sold 41 million copies as of 2025, one of the potential romantic partners is a highschool aged child who lives with her parents.

[–] Chronographs@lemmy.zip 17 points 2 weeks ago

As far as I could find none of the characters have canon ages and the dev said they were at least 20 so seems a bit much to get mad about

[–] RiotDoll@hexbear.net 8 points 2 weeks ago

please tell me how you define 'indie' in terms of the games industry please, because i'm very confused at your post but we can start there.

indie doesn't necessarily have class implications to me, although if i think about it, one can assume that even a one man or two man dev team on a passion project will likely have resources that flags them as bouge but idk this doesnt make sense, maybe it will if you explain how you define indie tho

[–] Drewfro66@lemmygrad.ml 47 points 2 weeks ago

This post is going to make a certain type of person so mad

[–] Frivolous_Beatnik@hexbear.net 41 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I bought the game but piracy isn't a problem lol. It's not like they aren't making enough money on it, especially considering steam broke with how many people were buying it day one.

Hope you're enjoying it!

[–] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 15 points 2 weeks ago

Will start it soon, just booted it up to make sure it runs OK.

[–] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 22 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

snes button layout spotted awooga

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 13 points 2 weeks ago

All these little handhelds got the Nintendo button layout lol

[–] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 17 points 2 weeks ago (4 children)

I'm often all for piracy, but Silksong? Come on man. They actually put their heart into their games and charge a reasonable price.

[–] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 76 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Don't care. What little money I have is best spent on necessities.

[–] I_Voxgaard@hexbear.net 32 points 2 weeks ago

correct answer

[–] tetris11@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 weeks ago (8 children)

whilst true, you didnt have to post this so proudly

stealing apples from your local farmer is a crime everyone probably commits at some point, but you don't and shouldn't brag about it

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 44 points 2 weeks ago

whilst true, you didnt have to post this so proudly

Oh my god can you can it with the liberal tears, the gnashing and wailing over something that isn't even fucking theft?

Stealing apples deprives a farmer of an actual physical good, data is infinitely replicable at essentially no cost. The devs already got paid, what, you think the people actually programming this shit haven't gotten a paycheck the entire time? That isn't how this works unless it's a solo dev doing all this shit by themselves, which I promise you they're not after a massively successful first game

[–] ClathrateG@hexbear.net 38 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

FYI some studies have shown piracy raises revenue for the 'official version' by exposing it to more people that would have without it, some of whom go on to purchase or spread via word of mouth etc to others that will

[–] take_five_moments@hexbear.net 15 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)
[–] john_brown@hexbear.net 31 points 2 weeks ago

Apples aren't copied, if you steal an apple from someone you are depriving them of an apple. Copies of games don't deprive anybody of anything other than money.

[–] take_five_moments@hexbear.net 29 points 2 weeks ago

idk i steal apples all the time

[–] I_Voxgaard@hexbear.net 26 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

the game is still there for people who want it.

and with the amount of food waste in modern economies this really isn't the analogy you want it to be

[–] QuillcrestFalconer@hexbear.net 26 points 2 weeks ago

My grandma has a house in a rural zone and I would pass through an apple orchard and just pick up some apples that were on the ground. They would be left to rot otherwise

[–] vovchik_ilich@hexbear.net 24 points 2 weeks ago

Smol bean farmer = multi-million dollar studio?

[–] vala@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (6 children)

That's a pretty expensive handheld is it not?

Just saying.

Edit: Everyone chill, I'm just broke and jealous haha.

[–] pinguinu@lemmygrad.ml 38 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Aw the poor little devs only made millions with their first game

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 30 points 2 weeks ago

And they crashed Steam's checkout system yesterday. They're going to be alright.

[–] I_Voxgaard@hexbear.net 32 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

you won't believe this but they have a fridge and microwave too

[–] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 32 points 2 weeks ago (5 children)

Mid level-ish? $200? Compared to something like an Odin or an ROG, or some of the newer Anbernics, I dont think so.

There's also some other Retroid users on this site.

Oh, if your point is that i have no money, then its about a year old.

[–] take_five_moments@hexbear.net 28 points 2 weeks ago

who gives a fuck

[–] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 24 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (1 children)

No, not really. Pretty much the cheapest of it's kind imo. Anything x86 is going to be at least double, if not triple or more. Switch 2 is double the price. Anything cheaper is making significant compromises and imo isn't comparable.

edit: just going to keep talking because I've been very interested in these devices lately. I'd say the closest comparison devices would be like the odin 2 which has a more powerful chip but is $300, or the Thor which starts at $250 for the same chip as the Retroid pocket 5 (handheld OP has). Anbernic recently put out an all metal handheld for $280, worse processor and smaller screen though. Those are probably the three its most comparable to it. RP5 is a really good value for what's currently on the market.

[–] vala@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

FWIW I own an ungodly amount of these stupid little handheld consoles. Anbernic stuff is the best IMO but the retroid is also pretty neat.

Main beef with the retroid is just that it runs android. The devices with minimal Linux systems are way cooler IMO.

[–] BountifulEggnog@hexbear.net 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The pocket 5 runs rocknix as well, as does the Odin 2. Linux definitely has some good things going for it but I'm coming around on android a bit, the sleep is much better.

I have an Anbernic xx device and love it, its just a different beast then the RP5. snes/gba is where I feel like my xx shines, not gamecube/wii/ps2/light switch.

[–] vala@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

I've personally never had sleep issues with my Linux handhelds but as a daily Linux desktop user I'm painfully aware that it's not on par with android.

All the android bloat just drives me nuts. I just don't really love having the playstore and email and all that on my gaming device.

The simplicity of the Linux devices and the way they just do one thing really appeals to me.

FWIW I don't actually care much to play any games past PS1/N64 on handheld. Anything later just feels better suited for a desktop or steam deck (totally different class of device IMO).

[–] thethirdgracchi@hexbear.net 32 points 2 weeks ago

The developer (Team Cherry) has three employees. Off of concurrent player count on Steam alone (so not including Playstation, Xbox, Switch sales) they made $10 million in a day. They're going to be ok if somebody pirates their game.

[–] MasterBlaster@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 1 week ago

pro-piracy morals aren't rooted in the idea that publishers/developers are opponents who behave poorly enough that they 'deserve' piracy of their products, so there is no product so uniquely good and crafted by 'the good ones' that you should be expected not to pirate it.

pro-piracy morals are rooted in the fact that art is now free to infinitely distribute. continued artificial restriction of art & culture will not be tolerated by anyone educated enough

[–] roux@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

Silksong is gonna make another cool $15 million for Team Cherry. I'll end up buying 4 more copies before it's said and done so that at the very least offsets Corgi pirating it. I'm also pretty sure TC are the kinds of devs like the Ultrakill or Disco Elysium devs that would rather you just pirate and enjoy it if you can't afford it. This is also the mentality of people like Devon Price, the author of Unmasking Autism, who has said as much. Some creators are actually chill people.

[–] Thordros@hexbear.net 16 points 2 weeks ago

Wow did you do a crime? Straight to gulag. gulag

[–] Kopfrkingl@hexbear.net 15 points 2 weeks ago

The call to morality doesn't work when you consider there are quite a few countries that the payment processors don't support.

[–] BadTakesHaver@hexbear.net 10 points 2 weeks ago

the reason hornet was in jail in the intro cutscene is because she pirated hollow knight

[–] LENINSGHOSTFACEKILLA@hexbear.net 6 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Ooh, I just ordered a retroid 4. How are you liking the 5?

[–] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Its great! Runs everything ive thrown at it well, aside from things that just have trouble being emulated. Just finished Bayonetta 2, switch version, and it ran smooth as hell. I went from a 3+ to a 5 and it helped a lot with certain GC games and Wii stuff too. By helped I mean "squeezed more frames out." Had it since release and have had 0 issues.

[–] LENINSGHOSTFACEKILLA@hexbear.net 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm so excited, I got the 4 pro, mostly for ps2 and dreamcast emulation. so many great games I missed or couldn't get far in because I was too young to understand them

[–] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

The 4 will do you great, enjoy!

[–] roux@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I can't play the damn game and I own it. I don't know but after I had to move my computer shit, now Steam won't recognize any controller, wired or bluetooth.

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

Does your OS recognize them? If not something might not be connected correctly or fully. If it does then I would send a support ticket into valve.

[–] mudpuppy@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

are people actually saying its super not ok to pirate this? this definitely seems like a game where theres a very strong argument that the devs deserve money, but its still a personal decision

[–] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Apparently I ruffled some feathersshrug-outta-hecks

[–] mudpuppy@hexbear.net 2 points 1 week ago

rly? i was actually feeling bad about giving such a room temperature take
