Like, a chill place where there aren't some reactionaries or Nazis hooting and hollering while they crank up the hell world dial? Some place where people don't have to think about or talk about American shit all the time? The spectacle and buzz of American society is just draining my soul.

The united states is the global cultural and economic hegemon, you can escape the violence and declining material conditions but until the empire truly collapses and has been ground to dust you are never escaping USA's reach

Most rural places in the world are like this unless it is an area actively in conflict. If you go post up in some village or small town in nearly any country, people are just living their lives and America isn't something you'll be hearing much about

Ya know, seems like a good way to go out. Killed by the only people in the world who have their priorities straight and the good sense to keep the modern world at bay.

Honestly america seems uniquely noisy and uniquely more reactionary than almost everywhere else. The UK is trying to catch up but even with that it's not the same and americans are unique in being regarded as the foreigners that are too loud and annoying when they visit. So even with the reactionary shit... It's not the same level. Almost everywhere is some degree of more chill.

In Europe UK tourists are more hated than USians from what I remember

The heavy drinkers and football wankers cause trouble everywhere they go. The average brits not so much. Typically discernable by whether there's a gammon coloured dude with his top off or not.

It's the ones that identify themselves as English vs those that identify as Brits.

Lower bar to travel, the US isn’t sending our worst sports-loving young men on bachelor parties

[–] Cat_Daddy@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

This is the answer. People from the US that travel to Europe are rich.

[–] ClimateStalin@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

So they’re also awful but in different ways

There's that one Hawaiian island where the people live in the traditional way. Nobody else is allowed on it though.

What if I wash up on shore from a shipwreck?

[–] nothx@hexbear.net 19 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Antarctica? I feel like the only place without soul crushing nonsense is a place without society lol

[–] Cat_Daddy@hexbear.net 21 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Well, unfortunately, no. They've had a string of assaults down there lately. At least for the past few seasons.

under a rock, until somebody picks it up to stack with some other rocks

[–] Cat_Daddy@hexbear.net 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Plus, you'll get scratched by an outdoor cat after the rock is gone

been thinking about this a lot but i think because of climate change the answer is that there's nowhere, at least not for the long term. plus even if you go to the extreme and move to a monastery in the himalayas there's still gonna be microplastics in your water

If there is, it'll come there soon. Right next to a fluffy animal is really your best option.

[–] Coolkidbozzy@hexbear.net 13 points 3 months ago (1 children)

never been there but I assume in iceland you can largely ignore america (other than tourism/trade in some areas) and live a decent life

[–] Cat_Daddy@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago

Problem with Iceland is they're really stingy with the visas. They want people to come visit, and then leave.

[–] Cat_Daddy@hexbear.net 13 points 3 months ago (2 children)

I'd say China, but they're pretty central to a lot of American bullshit. How about Vietnam?

[–] rubber_chicken@hexbear.net 19 points 3 months ago

I was hoping for a serene experience there until I got there. The transportation system is that everyone has a scooter, the scooters fill up the streets and everyone constantly honks at everyone else to get where they're going without colliding. I guess it's not the particular stress that OP wants to avoid but it's quite a shock. I stayed the full 30 days I was allowed, mostly to see the Reunification Day celebrations in HCMC, but I was very relieved to leave.

Shanghai was similar in my first visit but not my second, so I hope Vietnam can get a handle on it at some point, but I'm not holding my breath.

[–] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 4 points 3 months ago

Eh, just move to Sanya, Harbin or Kunming and avoid other foreigners and TV screens.

expensive af though and much less friendly people than anywhere else in latin america (in my experience)

Entrance hidden by bricks and rubble

There's nowhere like that with humans around, you'd have to be a hermit
