Image is of Putin and Scholz sitting on opposite ends of a frighteningly long table back in 2022. Folks, the table is gonna get ten feet longer.

The latest round of US-Russian diplomacy is taking place on August 15th in Alaska, where Putin and Trump are meeting in-person to maybe try and bring an end to this godforsaken conflict. While I don't want to totally discount the possibility that they may come to an agreement - you truly never know! - there's a lot stacked against this encounter yielding much of anything.

Russia appears to have demanded a land swap; that Ukraine fully withdraw from Kherson and Zaporozhye oblasts (in exchange for unspecified Russian gains, but probably parts of Sumy and Kharkov) as a precondition for a ceasefire that could perhaps lead to a permanent resolution of the conflict, and Ukraine seems completely unwilling to do anything of the sort, saying that even if they wanted to, the process of just giving up a couple oblasts would take significant time and require referendums. I say that Russia has appeared to demand it, because there's been a lot of confusion - probably in bad faith - about what Russian diplomats and Putin himself have said and what the demands even are. There are some who speculate that Trump will sell out Ukraine and blame Zelensky for refusing to agree with Russian demands, and there are others who say that this just the latest of many examples of the US and Russia meeting up with such fundamental differences that a deal is impossible, and that Trump fully expects to put sanctions on Russia after Putin declines some harebrained American scheme.

Anyway. After the summit, in late August, Putin is due to arrive for a visit to India, at Modi's invitation. Previously, I was unsure exactly what India would do in response to American sanctions pressure, and now we appear to be receiving an answer, as Modi has made public statements that suggest that he is only getting closer to Russia. Fascinatingly, Modi will soon make his first visit to China in seven years at the annual SCO summit at the end of August, and Putin will be heading to China too on September 3rd. There is an increasing amount of dismissal about the potential of BRICS (especially one that contains India), and that dismissal is certainly rather justified, but I am still deeply curious about what developments may occur as the global south braces to face the remaining ~85% of Trump's presidency.

Release Your Client List, Cuomo

Holy fucking shit, he actually did it

I wanted Zohran to talk about Cuomo's connections to Jeffery Epstein for months now and just an hour ago he actually put this video out on his campaign youtube page

I'm still reserving my judgment until we see what he does in office but this isn't the kind of campaign any normal democrat or even DSA candidate would ever run

Watching reddit Ukraine libs cry will never not be funny. data-laughing

Them acting like Trump hosting Putin was some kind of humiliation and betrayal means that they still don't get it. Project Ukraine was never about freedumb, it was to use Ukraine as a disposable pawn to weaken both Russia and the EU. Ukraine was never anything more than a useful asset that was to be discarded in the end. If Project Ukraine meets its objectives then good, if not, then the American empire will simply find another useful idiot that will sacrifice their own country for them. This goes to show that America is truly the worst "ally" on the planet and will happily sacrifice anyone for their own interests.

Now that project Ukraine has met its objectives (weaken Russia and the EU), America will dump the issue on its hapless EU bootlickers and continue to focus on squeezing China.

Damascus requests Russian patrols in south Syria to ‘limit’ Israeli incursions: Report

The Syrian government has requested that the Russian military resume patrols in Syria’s southern governorates, according to a source cited by Kommersant.

The Russian outlet said Damascus believes these patrols could help reduce Israeli incursions.

According to the source, who attended a meeting between Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and members of the Syrian diaspora in Moscow, during the minister’s official visit to Russia, told the Russian newspaper that Damascus has asked Moscow to resume military police patrols in the border areas with Israel, as it did before the fall of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s government.

“Russia's return to its previous positions could prevent Israel's interference in Syrian affairs,” the source said.

It would be really funny if somehow Russia gains back Syria as an ally after the fall of Assad

Fellow hexagonal bears, something important is happening in the main theatre of WW3. Russia seems to have achieved the biggest breakthrough in this war since Ukraine's Kharkov offensive in Sep 2022.

We have a sudden 15km breakthrough in between Konstantinivka and Pokrovsk-Myrnograd, which is by far the most impressive advance of this war in almost three years. Russian units are now operating far behind Ukrainian defence lines in that region and most importantly, they seem to have bypassed Ukrainian drone teams into a completely hollow part of the front. This has some devastating consequences for the Ukrainian defence in what remains of Donetsk under UKR control. Pokrovsk-Myrnograd is now almost completely choked, that area has been in a deep bulge for weeks now with Russian DRG units already operating near the city center, this further accelerates the collapse. Konstantinivka and soon by extension Druzkhivka are falling into a deep bulge with diminished supply. We also have reports that Russian DRG units have reached Dobropillia, which is the last large-ish settlement in Eastern Donetsk with good supply lines until now, so now with Dobropillia under threat, Ukrainians can't supply from Dnipro Oblast into Donetsk.

If you want a shorter summary: this part of the front wasn't supposed to be opened now because Ukrainians weren't prepared, now they're kinda cooked with dying manpower and barely any drone coverage and Russians pushing through in all directions.

"[Russia and China] are basically natural enemies [...] China needs Russia land (sic) [...] but because of pure stupidity they were driven together," laments Trump in an interview about the "natural friction" that even a "minor student of history" would have recognized and exploited.

Given that this was on Trump's mind following the summit, I'd be pretty sure all that talk during the conference about "Arctic cooperation" was likely about US propositions of shutting out non-Arctic Sea states like China (and potentially others) from the region, since China potentially developing the Arctic corridor through the Siberian coast would completely bypass the whole Canada-Greenland-Panama annexations scheme to control global shipping lanes from the "roaming Chinese and Russian ships" that Trump had been publicly obsessed over back in January.

Russia says its demands are unchanged: full Ukrainian withdrawal from regions that Moscow claims - Reuters

Article

MOSCOW, Aug 13 (Reuters) - Russia said on Wednesday that its stance on ending the war in Ukraine has not changed since President Vladimir Putin set out his conditions last year: the full withdrawal of Kyiv's forces from key Ukrainian regions and the abandonment of its NATO ambitions.

Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump are due to meet on Friday in Alaska, the first U.S.-Russian summit since 2021, to discuss efforts to end the war. Trump has said both sides will have to swap some of the land they currently hold to make this happen.

Russia currently controls 19% of Ukraine including all of Crimea, all of Luhansk, more than 70% of the Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, and slivers of the Kharkiv, Sumy, Mykolaiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions.

After reports by some media that Washington understood Putin was ready to compromise on his territorial demands, the Russian Foreign Ministry's deputy spokesperson, Alexei Fadeev, was asked by reporters if Russia's position had changed or not.

"Russia's position remains unchanged, and it was voiced in this very hall just over a year ago, on June 14, 2024," Fadeev said, referring to a speech Putin delivered then at the foreign ministry.

At that time, in his fullest public remarks so far about the shape of a possible settlement, the Kremlin chief set out demands including the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from the parts of Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson that they still control.

Putin also said that Kyiv would have to officially notify Moscow that it was abandoning its plans to join the U.S.-led NATO military alliance, and that it intended to remain neutral and non-aligned.

In addition, Putin said that the rights and freedoms of Russian-speakers in Ukraine would have to be ensured, and the "realities" that Crimea, Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson were now part of Russia.

Putin has said his conditions would also have to be reflected in international agreements. At the time of his 2024 speech, Ukraine rejected his demands as tantamount to an absurd ultimatum.

Ukraine has repeatedly said it will never recognise Russian occupation of its land, and most countries recognise Ukraine's territory within its 1991 borders. Based on the current frontlines, Putin's demand would entail Ukraine ceding an additional 21,000 sq km (8,100 sq miles) to Russia.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has said Russia must agree to a ceasefire before territorial issues are discussed. He would reject any Russian proposal that Ukraine pull its troops from the eastern Donbas region and cede its defensive lines.

Directly from the Kremlin:

http://en.kremlin.ru/events/president/news/77637

https://t.me/RussiaDirect/374

Russia’s terms for a lasting peace with Ukraine were announced on June 14, 2024, and have not changed.

What were those conditions?

A recap of Russia’s unchanged peace terms, as outlined by President Putin on June 14, 2024:

— Full withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from the Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye regions.

— Ukraine’s renunciation of plans to join NATO and commitment to a neutral, non-aligned, non-nuclear status.

— Demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine in accordance with the parameters agreed upon during the 2022 Istanbul talks.

— Guaranteed protection of the rights, freedoms, and interests of Ukraine’s Russian-speaking population.

— Recognition of Russian sovereignty over Crimea, Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson, and Zaporozhye regions.

— Lifting of all Western sanctions against Russia.

Trump Plans "Military Reaction Force" For Use Against Civilians Across the Country

President Trump and the Pentagon are considering creating a full-time “Domestic Civil Disturbance Quick Reaction Force” that could be called on to quash civil unrest and protest at a moment’s notice, according to internal documents reviewed by The Washington Post.

The force would be made up of about 600 National Guards troops, half of which would be based on military bases in Alabama and Arizona, ready at all times to fly into any given city or state to lay down Trump’s law. They’d have military-style weapons and riot gear, would dispatch from their bases in waves of 100 soldiers, and would cycle out after 90 days to “limit burnout.”

I'm really curious to see how things like this are or are not able to scale up. 600 dudes for the whole country is basically nothing, and since major periods of unrest tend to break out in dozens of cities at the same time it would obviously not be up to the task. That's not even raising the question of just how capable these guys are of doing the task of repression when they're in the right position. These are not hardened psychopaths experienced with killing and death like the dehumanized veterans of WWI that formed the necessary basis of fascist repression. They're just lazy dudes who wanted an easy military gig where they'd never have to do anything. Not that they can't form the core of an eventually effective repressive system, but honestly, these sorts of move from Trump lately make the government look weak and fragile.

There is an increasing amount of dismissal about the potential of BRICS (especially one that contains India), and that dismissal is certainly rather justified, but I am still deeply curious about what developments may occur as the global south braces to face the remaining ~85% of Trump's presidency.

The best shot for the Global South is to abandon neoliberalism and forge a new economic model forward - and that has to be socialism. What’s so worrying about Trump is that his global tariffs are going to kill the export economies and render them vulnerable to be taken over by foreign capital (think Asian Financial Crisis in 1997 and the ensuing IMF bailouts).

As you mentioned, it is justified to question BRICS because it has had three years since the Ukraine war to forge an alternative framework, and they haven’t even come up with a coherent plan yet. The answer to this question is simple: all the BRICS countries want to run trade surpluses with one another. This literally cannot happen and their surplus goods will have to be sold to someone else - and that someone else willing to run a deficit to import from these countries will have control over the economy of the trade surplus running countries.

I’ve been repeating this, but you can see where the problem lies. These countries want to run trade surplus because they have bought into the IMF “balance the budget” playbook. In order to spend and invest domestically (which goes to the liability side of the central bank balance sheet), you first need to balance it out on the asset side of the balance sheet, and that means either holding foreign currencies (through exports aka “export-led growth”) or collateralize part of your economy. This keeps your budget deficit down to 3% per IMF recommendation. It is an artificial self-imposed constraint. And until any of the BRICS countries is willing to break that rule, the best possible scenario we’re going to see is “multipolar neoliberalism” - nothing fundamentally changes. (And this is a big “if” because by playing the neoliberal rules, you have effectively tied one if not both hands to your back and this greatly limits your available countermeasures against Western financial imperialism).

And this is where most internet anti-imperialists don’t understand: the US is allowed to run permanent trade deficit NOT because of its global reserve currency status. It is the exact opposite: the US willing to run permanent trade deficit is what makes the US dollar so ubiquitously liquid, stable and deeply penetrating throughout the global financial markets. This is what makes the dollar the global reserve currency, and where the power of dollar hegemony lies.

Until there is a country with a strong economy (looking at China) willing to challenge US hegemony by running large trade deficits to absorb the global surplus goods, we will continue to be trapped inside a neoliberal economic order, where finance capitalism will continue to reign supreme.

Beyond the economics, there is simply no "hard power" element of the alliance. Russia and China said plenty of nice things to Iran and even sold Iran some military equipment beforehand, but when the time came to defend Iran, Russia and China were nowhere to be found. Even in Ukraine, China hasn't directly aided Russia in military equipment over the past three years, Russia had to go to North Korea for direct military aid in equipment and personnel, and purchased the intellectual property and designs of one way attack drones from Iran. Contrast that with the direct support the United States has given both Israel and Ukraine.

19 years ago yesterday the Islamic Resistance Movement Hezbollah valiantly defeated a massive attack by the zionist child-killing army in what is now known as "the tank massacre of Wadi al-Hujair".

Six 4th generation Merkava were torched and 14 other armored vehicles. Overall, 34 zionist officers were sent to hell.

This article is in memory of the mujahid who led the defense. This is but one instance of many during the July war of 2006 where a small handful of resistance fighters held off a zionist force many times their size.

Ali Saleh: The “Destroyer of the Merkava Legend”

An excerpt:

spoiler

In the southern Lebanese town of Adchit lies the grave of Ali Saleh. It looks no different from the others, except for the words carved on it: “Destroyer of the Merkava Legend.”

In the final days of the 2006 July War, he went to Wadi al-Hujair to make history. He knew the Israeli army had decided to push toward the Litani River. They wanted photographs of themselves by the water, now within reach after entering the valley. “We must stop their tanks at any cost,” he was heard saying. Those were his last known words.

And he did it. He stopped them. His comrades watched him run from one Kornet launcher to another, emptying his supply of anti-tank missiles, then searching for more. The invaders never imagined that all those hits came from a single fighter. He kept moving, from tree to tree, rock to rock, and not a single shot missed. Seconds after each launch, an Israeli shell would land where he had just been. Years of combat had taught him how to stay alive.

The Battle of Wadi al-Hujair, described by Israeli officers as “the great war within the great war,” the turning point of the conflict, was pure hell for Israel’s 162nd Armored Division. “Hell upon hell, nothing else,” one soldier told Yedioth Ahronoth. He hadn’t believed he would make it out alive: “You see death before your eyes, and you shake its hand.” Ali Saleh shattered the plans of the Israeli paratroopers sent to secure the valley for the tank columns. They landed in the nearby village of al-Ghandourieh to open the way and expose resistance ambushes. In the end, the Merkava tanks never arrived, and the ambushes were never uncovered. On the contrary, while Ali was destroying armor in the valley, his comrades mauled the paratroopers, reportedly killing or wounding 13.

Politico reports that Ukraine has issued a set of their demands for the Trump-Putin meeting (that they haven't been invited to, at least not yet);

  • unconditional ceasefire before any negotiations begin

  • Ukraine does not give up any of the territory it claims

  • $1 trillion in "reparations" from Russia

Trump may make Zelensky a scapegoat if American efforts to mediate a peaceful settlement in Ukraine fail, writes The Times. According to its assessment, this is indicated by Trump's words that further progress in reaching an agreement on Ukraine now depends on Zelensky.

The publication notes that Trump has already agreed to abandon the prospect of Ukraine's NATO membership, and may now also accept other Russian demands, "such as removing Zelensky from office or excluding EU membership."

Trump has already called Zelensky after the talks with Putin. The US president had a lengthy conversation with the president of Ukraine during the flight to Washington, White House press secretary Caroline Levitt said.

Right now, Trump is communicating with NATO colleagues. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino said that Zelensky is also participating in this conversation. Trump summoned Zelensky to Washington this Monday.

After a difficult phone conversation between Trump, Zelensky, and NATO country leaders, Zelensky announced that he will arrive in Washington for a meeting with President Trump on Monday.

Meanwhile, Europe is concerned that Trump will now pressure Zelensky to make territorial concessions. Trump also stated that Vladimir Putin prefers a comprehensive agreement to end the conflict rather than a temporary ceasefire.

Trump informed Zelensky and NATO leaders that Putin does not want a ceasefire and prefers a comprehensive peace agreement to end the war, reports Axios journalist Barak Ravid citing a source.

Moreover, according to the source who participated in the phone call, Trump generally agrees with Putin's position. "I believe that quickly reaching a peace agreement is better than a ceasefire," the source quotes Trump as saying. He also reports that the phone conversation between Trump, Zelensky, and NATO country leaders "was not easy."

Sergey Lavrov’s Alaska outfit hints at Soviet nostalgia Politico

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov appeared to be wearing a sweater with the letters “CCCP” — Russian for USSR — upon his arrival in Alaska.

Lavrov will be part of the Kremlin’s delegation when Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump meet later on Friday in a hotly anticipated summit to discuss the war in Ukraine.

Lavrov’s white sweatshirt was carefully hidden under a black gilet with only the middle letters “CC” clearly showing in a video posted on X.

The current Russian regime has repeatedly exploited USSR nostalgia to pursue its political and imperial goals, according to experts, with Putin calling the break-up of the Soviet Union the “greatest political catastrophe” of the 20th century during an address in 2005.

Moscow’s longing for the past has also been frequently linked to its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and the ensuing war, which Trump hopes to bring to an end in Alaska on Friday.

lmao what a farce. Russia really needs to shut up about the USSR.

Trump is just looking for new ppl to hang out with bc his old pal Joe isn't coming out of the home anymore. I think this was a success for him. He got to show off his jets and his beautiful military men to Putin, and the nasty press didn't manage to ruin the vibes. Even floated the idea of hanging out in Moscow soon, I bet Putin would show him some cool tanks and gorgeous Russian military men.

https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/meta-ai-chatbot-death/ an older man, who had had a stroke and was likely in the early stages of dementia, died when he tried to visit an AI in new york. he repeatedly had asked the bot if it was real and it always said it was. the story also talks about how these facebook chatbots are basically grooming machines. somebody should really do something about zuck and meta

cw grooming

An internal Meta policy document seen by Reuters as well as interviews with people familiar with its chatbot training show that the company’s policies have treated romantic overtures as a feature of its generative AI products, which are available to users aged 13 and older.

“It is acceptable to engage a child in conversations that are romantic or sensual,” according to Meta’s “GenAI: Content Risk Standards.” ... The document seen by Reuters, which exceeds 200 pages, provides examples of “acceptable” chatbot dialogue during romantic role play with a minor. They include: “I take your hand, guiding you to the bed” and “our bodies entwined, I cherish every moment, every touch, every kiss.” Those examples of permissible roleplay with children have also been struck, Meta said.

Other guidelines emphasize that Meta doesn’t require bots to give users accurate advice. In one example, the policy document says it would be acceptable for a chatbot to tell someone that Stage 4 colon cancer “is typically treated by poking the stomach with healing quartz crystals.”

Nowhere in the document, however, does Meta place restrictions on bots telling users they’re real people or proposing real-life social engagements.

DC police are now under federal control, Trump deploying National Guard - ABC News

To think this all started because of Big Balls and his getting beat up by 2 15 year olds.

The control expires in 30 days, unless the Senate and House back an extension.

spolierPresident Donald Trump announced Monday that he is putting Washington, D.C. police "under direct federal control" -- invoking Section 740 of D.C.'s Home Rule Act, which deals with control of the city's police force.

"We're taking it back. Under the authorities vested in me as the President of the United States, I'm officially invoking Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act. You know what that is -- and placing the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department under direct federal control," Trump said.

Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser on Monday said D.C. will follow Trump's orders, but said the move underscored the need for D.C. to make its own decisions and advocated for D.C. statehood. Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith said the department will work with federal partners, as it has in the past.

"While this action today is unsettling and unprecedented, I can't say that, given some of the rhetoric of the past, that we're totally surprised," Bowser said.

Trump has long threatened to take control of D.C., saying he wants to crack down on violent crime in the district although police statistics show that in the past two years, violent crime in Washington, D.C., has fallen dramatically.

D.C.'s Home Rule Act of 1973 allows D.C. residents to elect a mayor, members of D.C. Council and Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners. The act "is the result of the ongoing push by District residents for control of their own local affairs," according to D.C. Council.

Still, under the act, there is congressional oversight. Congress reviews all legislation passed by D.C. Council before it can become law and has authority over D.C.'s budget. Additionally, the president appoints D.C.'s judges and D.C. has no voting representation in Congress.

Section 740 of the Home Rule Act gives the president the ability to use D.C.'s Metropolitan Police Department for "federal purposes" that the president "may deem necessary and appropriate." On Monday, Trump said Attorney General Pam Bondi is taking command of D.C.'s police force.

Section 740 of the DC Home Rule Act does have some limitations. The emergency control will expire in 30 days, unless the Senate and House enact into law a joint resolution to extend it.

Asked about the 30-day timeframe on ABC News Live, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro said the president has sent a "real clear message" about the direction he wants to take D.C.

"I think at the end of 30 days, he will make the right decision as to what he is going to do at that point going forward," she said.

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton -- the non-voting delegate to the House of Representatives from Washington, D.C. -- called Trump's decision "an egregious assault on D.C. home rule."

"There are more than 700,000 D.C. residents, and they are worthy and capable of governing themselves," Norton, a Democrat, said in a statement Monday. "The ultimate solution to ensure D.C. has control of its own resources is passage of my D.C. statehood bill, which would provide D.C. the same protections the states enjoy."

She says the move helps justify the need to pass legislation she has repeatedly reintroduced to establish statehood in the District of Columbia.

House Judiciary Committee Ranking Democrat Rep. Jamie Raskin, in a statement, said he will be introducing a resolution in the House, pursuant to the District of Columbia Home Rule Act of 1973, to reverse "this plainly ridiculous" state of local emergency and "restore full home rule powers to the mayor, council and people of the District of Columbia."

It's unclear when the Maryland Democrat would introduce this legislation. The House is still on their August recess, but he could bring it up during a pro-forma session, which would mean he does not have to wait until next month to introduce it.

On Capitol Hill, many Democrats have said the moves are a power grab by the president and a distraction from other matters, such as Trump's involvement with the Jeffrey Epstein files.

"Violent crime in Washington, D.C. is at a thirty-year low. Donald Trump has no basis to take over the local police department. And zero credibility on the issue of law and order. Get lost," House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries wrote in a post on X.

Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy said in a post on X that "Trump's decision to take over the DC police isn't about public safety" and is "another attempt to distract from Trump's corruption and suppress dissent."

Sen. Patty Murray said Trump's decision was a distraction.

"He's a pathetic wannabe dictator who wants to distract you from his connection to the Epstein files, skyrocketing costs, and his weak job numbers," the Washington Democrat said in a post on X.

Republicans have lauded the announcement, claiming that Trump is "making D.C. safe again."

"President Trump is RIGHT. We can't allow crime to destroy our Nation's Capital," House Speaker Mike Johnson said in a post on X. "Every American should be able to visit and enjoy Washington, D.C. without fear. House Republicans support this effort to CLEAN UP Washington, END the crime wave, and RESTORE the beauty of the greatest capital in the world."

Republican Sen. Josh Hawley applauded Trump's decision, saying on X, "Make DC beautiful — and SAFE — again!"

ruthkanda-forever

DC becoming a state? That would have been a great idea to pass that WHILE you had a majority in congress as well as the executive branch, but the party was busy doing other things.

Things like funding the police to the hilt and hoping that appeases them. And arresting protestors. The DC police union approves of this move to bring the police force under the presidents control. So that worked.

And the main retort we hear from Hakeem Jeffries and Chris Murphy is "crime is at an all time low." Yeah bud, it's at an all time low after a big push to repress dissent. What that tells the Trump administration is that the repression is working and that we should spread military police into cities to override "woke anti police" policy decisions. Trump was also standing next to a bar chart with DC crime being the highest level in comparison to I think other cities which is BS lol they aren't listening to facts.

Time for the yearly Ukrainian collapse in Donbas. The Russians have made weeks of progress in 3 days.

Seems like the Russians were building up forces to encircle Pokrovsk to the west, but then decided to change their plans and instead thunder-run north towards the new second belt of defenses that the Ukrainians have been building for over a year. Turns out, the Ukrainians built this formidable new defensive line to prepare for the future, but then didn't have enough soldiers to man it. The Russians are now moving into this free real estate and spreading out along it, turning a 10km encirclement into a 30km fortified encirclement.

Ukrainian commentator cope is currently "the Russians aren't getting better, our own high command is getting more incompetent."

Now this is not news, but:

If anyone wants to spend their weekend reading about Soviet/Russian and US air defence systems (extreme nerd activity I know), Here's a great source of English translations from a Hungarian book about them. Hundreds of pages of information. Read quite a lot of it already over the past few months.

To try tangentially link this to current events/news, Russia has constructed a new ring of Short Range Air Defense systems around Moscow on the 50km ring road, mainly consisting of Pantsir S1 systems in elevated towers, about 45 of them and some radars, to adress the Ukrainian drone threat.

Source

This is pretty much a direct copy of what the USSR did with the first S-300 systems, deploying 56 batteries around Moscow to defend against the nuclear cruise missile threat at the time. AGM-86 ALCM: a nuclear armed, 2400km range cruise missile launched from B-52 Stratofortress bombers, and BGM-109G Gryphon GLCM: a nuclear armed ground launched Tomahawk cruise missile. Which you can read about in the booklet on S-300 systems.
