Elizabeth Gurley Flynn was born in 1890 in Concord, New Hampshire, to a radical, activist working-class family. When she was 10, the family moved to the South Bronx, where she attended public school. By the time she was 15, Flynn was active in socialist groups. At 15, she gave her first public speech, and the next year she was expelled from high school. She became a full-time organizer for the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).

In the years leading up to World War I, Flynn was active on women's rights, free speech for IWW speakers and organizing textile strikes in places like Lawrence, Massachusetts, and Paterson, New Jersey. She also worked to organize garment workers in Pennsylvania, silk weavers in New Jersey, restaurant workers in New York City and miners in Minnesota.

Flynn opposed the war when it broke out, and like many war opponents, she was charged with espionage. The charges were dropped and Flynn began working to defend immigrants threatened with deportation for their opposition to the war.

In 1920, Flynn helped found the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and was elected to the national board. From 1927-1930, she chaired International Labor Defense. During that time she was active in trying to free jailed labor organizers Thomas J. Mooney and Warren K. Billings. For the first half of the 1930s, she withdrew from public life because of bad health, but she returned to public life in 1939 and was re-elected to the ACLU board. When Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin signed a nonagression pact, the ACLU expelled all Communist Party members from its ranks, including Flynn.

Flynn ran for the Communist Party of America's Central Committee successfully, and ran for a seat in Congress unsuccessfully. During World War II, Flynn fought for women's economic equality. After the war, as communism grew more unpopular in the United States, Flynn shifted back to defending free speech rights for radicals. In 1951, she was arrested for conspiracy to overthrow the government based on the Smith Act of 1940. She spent more than two years in prison.

She returned to political action once she was out of prison, and in 1961, she became the first woman elected national chair of the Communist Pary. A critic of the Soviet Union, Flynn traveled behind the Iron Curtain and was stricken ill. She died in the USSR and was given a state funeral in Red Square.

Sometimes I think about the level of depression I experienced when I was around 12 and genuinely nothing I've experienced since has been as bad as that

I dont fully know what caused it but even after something traumatizing happens to me now I'm always like this still really doesn't compare to how bad that was

Also funny in an ironic way that literally no adult in my life did anything helpful but many of them did things that actively made it worse

It's interesting looking back and realizing they really were just doing whatever they felt like and claimed it was to help

Like one of their ideas was to randomly paint my room but to tell me I couldn't have it the colors I liked because they were "dark and depressing" and then painted it the 2 colors i specifically said i didnt want like come on

Its really strange how some people will use "this person is taking ozempic" as an insult. Like its a bad thing to take a medication if you're struggling with an eating disorder or drug addiction????

[–] Horse@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 1 week ago

some assholes hate fat people so much that they hate them for even trying to lose weight
same thing as mocking fat people at the gym, or for being on a diet
only theres the added angle of "cheating" at weight loss by using the wonders of modern medicine

This morning while I was saying hi to the cat in my neighborhood I've been trying to make friends with, I saw a snail in the wild for the first time ever theory-gary

Snail photoPhoto of a tiny snail on the sidewalk on its way to the grass

Cat friendship seems like it has been established as well! It's a pretty skittish cat and I think my respirator was making it extra suspicious of me, but once I was able to communicate that I'm friendly it came over and was very sweet. I got some photos with it as well but unfortunately I don't think posting those would be a very good idea.

so Vicky 3 may have something useful in it. had a long discussion with a formerly trump supporting co-worker (he seems like a squishy normie mostly apolitical rural guy).

i basically described market socialism to him as a "Cooperative Economy", responding to him being blackpilled about data centers and inhuman government. then I just described market socialism. by the end of our discussion he said "yeah we should just let the workers run these corporations and own them".

yeah "Cooperative Economy", it sounds good to americabrains. no red scare trigger words.

i've been using for others but he's the first that just straight up stated he wanted to seize the means (by using the government to purchase the corps from the owners/investors and giving ownership to workers). then I said a violent revolution may be required, and he sighed and agreed (then we had to get back to our depts)

Theres a baby crow that's been visiting the feeder and bird bath... she's so cute, I love how she carefully observes everything around her. Switching between baby voice and adult croaks.

Its been difficult to win the friendship of the crows, so I am hoping she sticks around!

Thinking my next new year's resolution is to become one of those guys who comments on old YouTube music videos "who's here in 2026?"

Figure there must be something rewarding in it to keep those guys at it for all these years

I started watching one of Gordon Ramsey's shows, secret service or whatever, he puts cameras and shit up in the store and spies on people and has a restaurant specific snitch. So basically it's Kitchen Nightmares but every episode has a "guess who's the snitch" sub plot

Anyway they kept criticizing this greek guy's tzatziki sauce and saying "it's a little sour" with a strong implication that it had gone bad or something. But like, uh, it's supposed to be a little fucking sour? Sorry is he supposed to use acid free greek yogurt and ph neutral lemon juice or something???

one of those things that make me question if i'm wrong or if everyone else is an idiot but i'm pretty sure they're all idiots. If Gordon Ramsay told me my tzatziki was sour I'd ask him if he wanted some cream cheese or something instead, cracker

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 11 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Remember that time Gordon Ramsay fucked up making grilled cheese? Remember that time he fucked up making pegao? Like how do you fuck up making pegao, pegao just happens if you don't use a rice cooker.

I don't blame men for being so obsessed about the Romans. They were really cool, the first civilization to build all their wonders themselves without the use of alien labor.

[–] mayakovsky@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Over the last year I've read so much less theory/history/etc than usual. I don't think I finished a single book. In the face of how fucking shit everything is, I just can't seem to bring myself to learn anymore about exactly how shit it is. 20 billion pages of theory and we still live in hell world. So many books being published that I'd like to and likely should read, but I have started to have such contempt for all these authors just rehashing shit for the nth time, or worse, typing out 500 pages of marketing for their new terms. I feel doubly so if they have tenure, and quadruple if it's at a university with ties to Israel (most of them tbh).

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 10 points 1 week ago

Over the last year I think I've gotten into a bunch of arguments about imperialism, Palestine, Russia, and so on, but I don't recall being in a simple capitalism vs socialism argument in ages. I guess that's because I'm not arguing with my friends and family about politics, and on Lemmy all the libs are radlibs who don't defend capitalism as a thing-in-itself (they just hate all the attempts at getting rid of it).
