Kids bringing guns to school to protect themselves from the drones that are protecting them from the guns

Kings bringing laser pointers to be based.

[–] GeckoChamber@hexbear.net 68 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

As a father, you ask me what am I willing to give up in my child's school, for protection? Everything.

yeah okay cool

[–] derry@midwest.social 87 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Except better gun control laws. Not those.

[–] Photuris@lemmy.ml 24 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I’m torn on this one. On the one hand I’d love to have sensible gun control laws in place that help prevent guns from getting into the hands of kids.

On the other hand, guns may be our only recourse against Fascism.

[–] pfr@lemmy.sdf.org 57 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Fascism is upon you now. What are you waiting for?

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 45 points 2 weeks ago

This except in the mind of amerikkkans the fascism is universal healthcare

[–] volcel_olive_oil@hexbear.net 58 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

what does it attack with? because I can only think it would be an explosive. might as well just keep some grenades around in the teacher's lounge

[–] LENINSGHOSTFACEKILLA@hexbear.net 60 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Video shows pepper rounds and "direct impact" which is literally just dive bombing the drone into the target.

[–] graymess@hexbear.net 45 points 2 weeks ago (5 children)

Maybe I'm underestimating the incredible power of the modern camera drone, but wouldn't getting dive bombed by one be the equivalent of someone throwing a plastic toy at you?

[–] LENINSGHOSTFACEKILLA@hexbear.net 42 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I mean, it wouldn't feel great? I assume dive bombing is only an option after the pepper munitions are used up. But yeah, its not really going to end the threat. A delay at best. Which is also what the people selling this were careful to note: about how this is just to get LEO more time to get on scene.

[–] volcel_olive_oil@hexbear.net 49 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

the cops proceed to send in more drones until the shooter runs out of ammo

They might’ve watched one too many Ukraine combat vids

[–] TheBroodian@hexbear.net 21 points 2 weeks ago

It would probably destroy the drone, which means more sales for the drone company! soypoint-1

[–] MiDaBa@lemmy.ml 17 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Well the DJI FPV weighs 795 grams and has a top speed if 87 MPH. That means its impact energy could be as much as 443 ft/lbs upon impact. For reference, a 9mm gun firing a 115 grain (not gram) projectile at 1180 fps generates about 356 ft/lbs of energy and that's just at the muzzle. Bullets are traveling slower the farther they travel where as a drone could be accelerating upon impact.

Yes, drones can be very dangerous.

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 39 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

Though that 443 ft/lbs is also spread out over a much larger area than a bullet, and unless the shooter is outside, they won't really have the space to get anywhere close to their maximum speed.

I feel like if drones were really this deadly, we'd hear a lot more about people using them as weapons, because it sounds much better (and quite possibly cheaper) than using a gun to kill someone.

[–] Runcible@hexbear.net 12 points 2 weeks ago

they do use them, as weapons they just make them explode at the end too.

How long until they are used to police students?

[–] FloridaBoi@hexbear.net 63 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I just watched a video on DARE and how it was a ploy to get more police in schools and make students into snitches

[–] Photuris@lemmy.ml 38 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I watched that video yesterday as well.

We homeschooled during COVID, and after that video I’m seriously tinkering with the idea of doing it again. It was a huge strain on my work schedule, but the kids thrived during that time and never did better in terms of their academic achievement. But, since they’re older now, it would be very hard on them in terms of their socialization and all that.

Public schools have turned into a weird mini police state, wherein some normal kid shenanigans - that should be handled by school administrators, by means of detentions and in-school suspensions - are now being handled by resource officers and the juvenile legal system. It’s madness and I hate it.

I think maybe what we really need to do is get tf out of America.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Ooo do you have a link? I’m curious about that.

[–] Posadas@hexbear.net 41 points 2 weeks ago

The operators are already doing that.

Now how long until they are used to suppress student protests?

[–] LENINSGHOSTFACEKILLA@hexbear.net 19 points 2 weeks ago

I give it 6 months

[–] mayo_cider@hexbear.net 47 points 2 weeks ago

Don't worry, the drones will wait outside the school just like the cops

[–] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 41 points 2 weeks ago

Ahem.

I remember joking many years ago about how every school needed predator drones that would fire on anyone who looked angry or upset.

Yea satire is dead, how do you beat reality? School Resource Officers being replaced with School Tactical Response Teams? School buses being replaced with mraps? Hallway monitors being replaced with deputized student-snipers in overwatch positions?
