So, the response to countries seeking trade outside the US sphere of influence is to make it harder for them to do business with the US.

BRICS is going to eat our lunch and I'll hold the refrigerator door for them

[–] HunterBrandon@hexbear.net 61 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

USA is now afraid of BRICS+ sicko-beaming

β€œI’m gonna bring back manufacturing”

In order to do that you need people who are willing to trade for your manufactured goods.

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 36 points 1 month ago (2 children)

What manufactured goods? What is even manufactured in the US anymore that anyone would be willing to buy?

i thought India made all the narcotics

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Eh, depends. The American and Euro companies have massive factories there, but so do native Indian companies.

But pharmaceuticals are an "advanced" industry that tends to stay in-house. It's one of the few industries that stays in the country (like weapons). This isn't a global north/south split either. Brazil for instance, has a massive pharma industry. I guess it's just one of those important industries to keep once you reach a certain stage of development.

Not trying to be a pain in the ass, but I'm not sure what you mean by keeping it 'in-house'? My partner has been working for bio/pharma for the past 8 years or so. The companies she works for always contract with other companies, most of which are large pharmas outside the US. Seems to be a pretty collaborative industry due to the high cost of coming up with new drugs.

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Ah, sorry. Bad English. I mean "in Country" maybe I should change it idk

[–] PoY@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 4 weeks ago

oh, well still.. many biopharms work internationally as well.. again.. my partner's companies have all had international projects with varying other biopharmas all over the world but mostly in Europe

Vietnam will totally buy Yankkkee goods! Trust in his plan! trump-drenched

[–] Grapho@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago

Sure, I can buy a better product for 10 dollars that's made in Vietnam by a Chinese company, but this piece of shit that costs 150 dollars before tax and has no aftermarket replacement parts anywhere says "Made in the USA".

[–] boiledfrog@hexbear.net 22 points 1 month ago (2 children)

You also need people willing to do horrendous factory jobs.

You also need factories lmao

[–] Hestia@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago

Yeah, there’s a reason I don’t work manufacturing anymore. Fucking shithole country I live in.

[–] selokichtli@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Sounds like forced work in concentration camps like Alligator Alcatraz?

[–] jack@hexbear.net 4 points 1 month ago

The US would need to be able to build a factory in order to turn a concentration camp into one.

[–] boiledfrog@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Yes, these fuckers will do everything they can to continue and expand slavery

[–] Grapho@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago

Which is not just morally horrible (which should be the end of it), it's economically horrible. It's very unsustainable, will plunge the working class into debt (and then into debt peonage, most likely) and then the market goes kaboom and there's no guarantee that the world bails out the US again.

[–] Rom@hexbear.net 52 points 1 month ago

Side with NATO? Believe it or not, also tariffs.

[–] KnilAdlez@hexbear.net 42 points 1 month ago (2 children)

What the hell does he even want? Does he know?

[–] invo_rt@hexbear.net 33 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Based on the reports from the earlier negotiations and the way he's talked about how other countries are given a great honor to sell their goods in the US, I assume he wants other countries to come before him and kneel.

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 21 points 1 month ago

Pretty standard behaviour for a collapsing empire tbh. They demand tribute from other nations in order to prove to all that they are still on top.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 29 points 1 month ago

Obesiance, I reckon

[–] FuckyWucky@hexbear.net 41 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

He is going low now. 10% while not great I think most of these countries will eat up partly.

Its the 25-30% and above tariffs that made me think "wtf is he thinking?". I'm very certain had this been the Trump from two months back he would've threatened 50%.

[–] Hestia@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago

It’s an extra 10%

[–] BGDelirium@hexbear.net 41 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And and and for any countries who don't buy the new Wendy's Taki's fuego Chicken Sandwich they will get an extra 25% tariff!

And and and if you call me taco Trump you got an extra 15% tariff because my feelings were hurt!

Just pulling numbers and reasons out of his ass

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago

call me when it's a blue heat

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 40 points 1 month ago
[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 33 points 1 month ago

Ell-oh-ell

I'm sure going all trigger happy with tariffs is totally going to make them want to be economic partners with the USA

when I'm in a "shooting myself in the foot" competition etc etc and so on

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 32 points 1 month ago

Won't matter to NATO. They'll be back to calling him daddy

[–] Evilphd666@hexbear.net 30 points 1 month ago

And no one will care. They will simply sell to the rest of the world while our shelves go bare.

[–] CTHlurker@hexbear.net 27 points 1 month ago (1 children)

How are you even going to make the argument that you're "siding" with BRICS? I know that Trump is a babybrain, but this is fucking weird, even for him. Like, does siding with BRICS mean you continue trading with China? Or does it mean you sell pharma-products for the beef-exporters in Brazil? Or does it mean you buy Russian oil? This is fucking insane babble from the king himself.

[–] selokichtli@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I think it's a veiled message to Mexico, who was invited as an observer top the latest BRICS meeting, or whatever they call it. Mexico's ex-president told Biden that the three countries should work together to form a united front against China in a fair trade competition.

But Biden... then Trump... I mean the USA policy, that everyone should bow to them or they just pretend they don't exist and nothing happens.

[–] shath@hexbear.net 25 points 1 month ago

giving everyone a common enemy nice stuff

[–] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 20 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It is good if we are attacked by the enemy, since it proves that we have drawn a clear line of demarcation between the enemy and ourselves.

[–] mrfugu@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago

Reading this polished my brain

that'll show 'em

[–] ComRed2@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago

That's my anti-globalism, anti-one-world government president amerikkka-clap

[–] blobjim@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago

I think it'll definitely make countries have second thoughts when considering whether or not to join BRICS stuff, but I don't think it would affect any current members, and it's obviously not the only consideration.

[–] thefluffiest@feddit.nl 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

He needs to tax his dumbass base to pay for his big ugly bill, and this is the way to get them to pay up. As with everything he does, it’s a grift

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago

Sell his base a new "Golden Trump Donation" that you 'voluntarily' (opt-out) give to the Federal Govt. They'll love that shit.
