Funny but I dunno if I buy it tbh, using an EpiPen alone is a medical emergency requiring medical attention. It's not something you can just shake off.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@lemmy.world 21 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Obviously after the first couple times he would build up a tolerance.

[–] eth0slash0@sh.itjust.works 21 points 10 months ago

Two epi pens?

[–] frezik@midwest.social 6 points 10 months ago (2 children)

If you start taking small bullets to the head, you can build up a tolerance to taking larger bullets to the head.

[–] ComicalMayhem@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

is this true /k/ommandos?

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 10 months ago

It's why you always always spin the chamber going up against a saurian when lead is on the line.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 6 points 10 months ago

Yeah, it keeps you breathing until you can get help hopefully. I don't have allergies, though my dad does and carries and epi pen, but I don't think I'd trust my body to just get over it by the time the epinephrine wears off.

[–] spinne@sh.itjust.works 2 points 10 months ago

Being on your parents' insurance is its own safety net

[–] Waldelfe@feddit.org 2 points 10 months ago

Also I read somewhere that an EpiPen works in like 95% of cases. There is a small but existing chance that it won't work and you just die from anaphylaxis.

[–] rhombus@sh.itjust.works 2 points 10 months ago

Depends on the severity of the allergy. Sometimes epipens are prescribed for people who have a risk of anaphylaxis but have never actually experienced it. Which means that people doing this are still tremendously stupid, but not unbelievable.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 10 months ago

Sounds like someone's outta practice.

[–] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 39 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Dude must be rolling in dough. Those pens aren’t cheap.

[–] A_cook_not_a_chef@lemmy.world 39 points 10 months ago (1 children)

They used to be about $100 for a two pack. Not cheap, but not as outrageous as now.

[–] Cethin@lemmy.zip 9 points 10 months ago

IIRC there's also generics that are significantly cheaper. They don't have the same applicator though, so insurance usually doesn't cover them.

It's really sad that this web site had to exist.

Fuck capitalism.

this is unironically my plan for tomorrow night.

Im allergic to shellfish and I discovered imitation crab from a meme (fittingly on Lemmy) which is only like 5% actual crab.

However, my allergy started as a kid and just got worse and worse till I eventually couldn't eat it at all anymore, it's been like 5 years.

Since we don't know if the allergy got to deadly levels in that time, I have to be around an epi-pen when I eat it.
My brother in law has one, so I'm going to his house after work.

I'll keep you updated 🫡

edit, update 1: finished work for the day. headed to brother in laws house in about an hour! super excited.

edit 2: im so upset.

they were frozen last night so I actually left them to thaw overnight. I mentioned to my sister about how people said to microdoce it, so I only warmed up 1 in the microwave with some butter just in case I had a bad reaction.
When I ate it the texture was super chewy and slimy almost, not very fun. The flavor was hardly the real thing, and the worst part: IT GAVE ME A HEADACHE.
I am so distrought. My hopes were so high. it let me down:((

I might try microdoceing a quarter before bed or something for a couple weeks. Since it is only a headache I feel like I can work myself up to bigger parts - if I can sleep through the headaches that is.

at the end of the day It was a nice try and I'm glad I tried it :/

[–] thedarkfly@feddit.nl 25 points 10 months ago

Maybe... don't take the risk? If you wanna know how allergic you are, there are tests for that.

Don't play with fire, friend. Fake crab isn't worth dying for.

[–] lmmarsano@lemmynsfw.com 11 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

Have you considered immune tolerance therapy for your allergies or does it not apply in your case?

Flat-out lacking evidence & ignoring immunology, shitty guidelines in the UK & US to avoid exposure pretty much proliferated severe allergies uncommon elsewhere in the world. The peanut allergy study is only one example. For some allergies, there are therapies to safely reintroduce exposure & rebuild tolerance.

[–] musubibreakfast@lemm.ee 9 points 10 months ago (2 children)

For your final immune test you will be submerged in a tank filled with a mixture of lobster bisque and peanut butter.

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 2 points 10 months ago

And stirred for a couple hours in near boiling temperature

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 10 months ago

That's not its final form though. Wait until they take their rubber bands off.

[–] MeaanBeaan@lemmy.world 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Wait. There's crab in immitation crab meat? I though it was just some variety of white fish or something.

[–] AnyOldName3@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

That way they can sell it as Crab Product rather than the much less appetising Crab Flavour Fish Product.

[–] ArsonButCute@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 10 months ago

Is Krab not an ok name anymore?

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 8 points 10 months ago

Updated 4 hours ago. RIP you shellfish weirdo

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Allergists can work magic now with micro dosing. My kid's peanut allergy is just gone.

If you have the means and the desire, it's called LDA (low dose allergen) therapy. It's sometimes also called SLIT (sub-lingual immuno therapy). There's probably differences. I'm not a doctor.

[–] echodot@feddit.uk 3 points 10 months ago

I'm allergic to cucumbers and even if I just touch the flesh of a cucumber to my lips, my lips well up. I'm not sure how much less dosage I could give myself.

Also it's cucumber so who the hell cares anyway.

[–] TriflingToad@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

would SLUT therapy work too? 🥺

Fr though, I never liked most seafood, only the crab. If I can get most of the crab back I'll be happy, I don't see a need to pay for therapy for food I don't really enjoy 90% of.

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I'm probably wrong, but maybe microdosing could help you not die from 5% crab. But you gotta do it with a doctor, and it can be expensive. On the upside, you could get so sick of eating crab that you won't need to worry about your allergy again.

[–] rhombus@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 months ago

Immunotherapy for allergies uses literally microscopic doses of allergens to avoid triggering a reaction. It’s not really possible to consume an amount small enough to get the same effect.

[–] alphapuggle@programming.dev 3 points 10 months ago

Haha I saw that post and your comment on it, lemmy really is a small world

[–] Ledericas@lemm.ee 2 points 10 months ago

My brother built tolerance to shellfish overtime, never had a severe reaction though, maybe that could explain it.

[–] TachyonTele@piefed.social 31 points 10 months ago (2 children)

It's always the drummer...

Signed,

[–] shneancy@lemmy.world 8 points 10 months ago

the person who you only notice when they stop playing

[–] Whats_your_reasoning@lemmy.world 10 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

As a former band kid, as well as a former roadie for a local band, I concur.

After those experiences, I totally understand why the drummer for the Muppets band is Animal. That chaotic beast basically embodies the spirit of drumming.

[–] Soapbox@lemmy.zip 18 points 10 months ago (1 children)

One of my best friends has a mild shellfish allergy. He swells up and turns red, but it's not bad enough to require an EpiPen. On multiple occasions, I have seen him go nuts at a shellfish buffet until he balloons up and looks like a tomato, then he pops a Benadryl and sleeps it off.

Personally, I hate shellfish. Especially the smell of it. So I lie to people and tell them I am allergic, so they shut the fuck up about getting me to try it.

[–] PetteriSkaffari@lemmy.world 8 points 10 months ago

Shellfish are quite happy you hate them and leave them be.

[–] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 5 points 10 months ago

I farmed shellfish for six years. I do not eat shellfish. I mean, more power to you, but at least cook the little shits, for everyone's sake.

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 4 points 10 months ago

King... Of the idiots?

Wait, was his name Donald?

[–] PrettyFlyForAFatGuy@feddit.uk 3 points 10 months ago

My ex housemate used to be allergic to dairy, not deathly though.

He'd still eat a full pizza every friday to himself, then spend a few hours throwing up in the toilet.

Was worth it apparently

[–] debil@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

king

This is one of those "bacon tho" things that combine human selfishness with animal cruelty and top it off with Darwin award level of stupidity.

[–] Aggravationstation@feddit.uk 2 points 10 months ago

My Dad is allergic to shellfish. I'm not but hadn't eaten any in years when I had a shellfish pasta dish a few months ago and felt high for hours after.

[–] t_berium@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)
