Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

I'll add a few of my own:

  • PlateUp! It's like roguelike Overcooked. Upgrade and build your own kitchen as the customers come faster and faster, try to survive long enough to earn five stars.

  • LevelHead, its like indie Mario Maker. Play as a delivery robot and escort the package to the flag. The package works like the companion cube! You can throw it to deflect bullets, or climb on it, or drop it on a button, etc. Level editor looks good too!

  • Shütshimi, its like Wario Ware except it's a shmup. Swim through waves of enemy fish, get a powerup after each wave, but think fast, you only get five seconds to read what the items do.

A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is sleeping 6ft underground with the rest of the garbage

[–] TriflingToad@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

unrelated but if you wanna emulate persona 5 royal and add a 60fps mod, I confusingly spent 3 hours stumbling around last night fighting with my deck and learned how 😵‍💫

[–] ComradePedro@lemmy.ml 5 points 2 days ago

For anyone insterested, you can download a fork of Yuzu Emulator here (Nintendo Switch emulator). Fuck Nintendo.

Lovers In A Dangerous Spacetime.

Lethal League.

I used to collect tons of local multiplayer couch co-op games back in college when I had 3 other gamer housemates. Lots of junk but some gems. My favorite has to be gang beasts and Blur (you'll have to pirate that one these days - think Mario kart if it was made in the style of need for speed). Also golf with your friends has good local multiplayer support as well as olliolli2 if you're into side scrolling skateboarding. Then there's chaotic cooperative games like overcooked, moving out, and out of space, as well as Magicka 2. For a Mario party type game there's pummel party, and a good twin stick shooter is assault android cactus.

[–] SpaceBishop@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Magicka and Magicka 2 were so much fun when I had roommates. It's not nearly as fun when the other players are not sitting on the couch next to you. Plus, my friends these days don't enjoy randomly blowing up from a spell gone awry, which, you know, is the funniest part.

[–] BakedCatboy@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 days ago

Yeah those spell mishaps really add a lot of fun! I remember we were always accidentally blowing ourselves up with the wrong combinations or doing electrical spells when wet. Then there's the exit to desktop spell that exits the game lmao.

[–] nycki@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

is pummel party good? i grew up on Mario Party 3. also, would it be joycon friendly, or should I get out the full-size controllers?

[–] cujo255@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

Pummel party is a lot of fun. Not all of the mini games are great (read: functional) especially if you add workshop games, but the core mechanics and the official minigames are a blast (pun intended, there are items like rockets and shotguns rather than your normal shells)

[–] BakedCatboy@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 days ago

I unfortunately can't really say since I've only played an hour with a friend who is really into it, and I never grew up playing any of the Mario party games. But I know a few people who really like it so it can't be that bad I guess haha. I also can't speak to joycons because we use Xbox controllers, I think there are some mini games that rely on Xbox layout / colors so that might be rough

[–] Arkhive@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Crawl. Has to be one of my fav couch games.

Was this as simple as connecting over Bluetooth? I recently put a PC in my living room, but I’m currently using a PS controller. Would love to be able to lounge with split joy cons like I can on the switch.

[–] nycki@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

yeah! it used to be a little bit fiddly with installing custom drivers, but that's all built into steam now. or if you're not using steam, look up joycond (linux) or betterjoy (windows).

[–] Skullgrid@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Crawl.

I hate that I can never get 4 friends in a room together, then even rarer to pay attention to this game long enough. The game is so fucking hype, as is the launch trailer.

Could Pico Park work? The Steam Deck is already in a protective case ;)

[–] jsomae@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 days ago

Overcooked 1 -- incredible game if you want a real challenge as a team, but it may put your friendship to the test.

(Overcooked 2 is okay as a sequel but it's laggy, it's got long loading times, it has a confusing UX (good luck figuring out how to select your character), and is just overall less polished, so I wouldn't recommend it.)

[–] paultimate14@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Gauntlet tends to be my go-to for these situations.

There's versions on Steam real cheap that run great on the deck. Not that emulation is hard but it can occasionally be a little janky so it's nice to not have to worry about it. Tends not to be super sensitive to lag. It's easy to pick up and learn. It's fun to play as a one-off, but also fun for a regularly recurring experience too. You don't need a full controller either- I often use my RetroBit Genesis controllers, but I'm sure a joycon would be fine.

My kids have been playing Bopl Battle a lot, might be fun if you like battle platformers with absurd weapons.

[–] chetradley@lemm.ee 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Bopl Battle fucking rules. Also check out SpiderHeck.

[–] pennomi@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago
