President Donald Trump on Wednesday acknowledged that his tariffs could result in fewer and costlier products in the United States, saying American kids might “have two dolls instead of 30 dolls,” but he insisted China will suffer more from his trade war.

"The american people will suffer but china will suffer more." So hes hurting us to hurt them? Great job dumbass.

[–] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 8 points 7 hours ago

but he insisted China will suffer more from his trade war.

Even if this were true (which is dubious) this doesn't make me feel any better. That would simply make this a Pyrrhic victory.

What is the point of any of this? Oh yeah, cruelty is the point.

[–] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 4 points 8 hours ago

Donny "2 dolls" trump.

[–] cley_faye@lemmy.world 6 points 9 hours ago

Yeah, I'm sure China's trembling at the mere idea.

[–] Pyr_Pressure@lemmy.ca 15 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

What about the kids who were lucky to get 2 dolls prior to the trade war? Shit outta luck I guess.

[–] InternetCitizen2@lemmy.world 5 points 8 hours ago

Trump has a plan for them too. The coal mines.

[–] Yerbouti@sh.itjust.works 9 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

To get to BECOME the doll of some rich kid. You woke people really hate freedom.

[–] ShitposterSupreme@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago

Reminds me of middle-age tales where when a princeling disobeyed his whipping-boy would get beat.

[–] LordCrom@lemmy.world 8 points 10 hours ago

Can't wait to see what happens when China stops buying our debt.

[–] HurlingDurling@lemmy.world 14 points 13 hours ago

China is happily selling to the rest of the world, and yes their sales will go down without the US market, but they won't in sense of the word "suffer".

[–] Glitterbomb@lemmy.world 44 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Except the kids aren't getting 2 dolls. They're getting dragged out into the middle of the street half naked in the middle of the night because the brownshirts can't even read an address correctly when they're casually disappearing whole families.

Why the fuck is this even reported on. Fuck this whole system, down to the author that thought 'ya that's worth making an article'

Don't buy your kids dolls. Buy them fpv drones.

[–] hovercat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 16 hours ago

Sadly, this probably concerns the average voter more than all the Nazi shit...

[–] Lemminary@lemmy.world 7 points 11 hours ago

Suffering is the point

[–] xorollo@leminal.space 5 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

We are already at a family video game for the kids to share and a really good dinner for the week.

[–] lemonbun@lemmy.world 9 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

doesn't sound like you're sacrificing enough. good dinner should be monthly

[–] xorollo@leminal.space 2 points 10 hours ago

This is Christmas Dinner. Once a year 😭

[–] myrrh@ttrpg.network 1 points 9 hours ago

...we get a good dinner once per week on a good week; we get a good week once per month on a good month; we get a good month once per season on a good season; we get a good season once per year...

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 30 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

2 dolls instead of 30 works out to a reduction of 93.3%! That's HUGE. If that's supposed to be his positive spin on things, Americans are truly fucked.

[–] ipkpjersi@lemmy.ml 7 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago) (1 children)

It really shows that he doesn't care about Americans, he cares about punishing and attacking people that he doesn't like. That is all that matters to him, and he doesn't hide that. He doesn't want to make things better, he wants to make people suffer.

The fact that he has supporters is absolutely unfathomable to me. Then again, those same supporters want to punish the same people he does, so it starts to make sense.

[–] Catma@lemmy.world 7 points 16 hours ago

He wants to punish Americans more than probably anyone else. Americans had the nerve to laugh at him when people joked about his hair, or makeup, or physique. Americans did not elect him in 2020. Americans allowed him to be forced out and didnt fight back hard enough when Biden "stole" the election. Americans allowed him to have some minor inconveniences when they put him on trial, raided his house for classified docs or made him take reaponsibility for his actions. Americans are going to pay because he knows nothing other than vengence for percieved slights and Americans allowed them all to happen

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 26 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

A real "let them eat cake" moment.

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 6 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

That's the real statement. Instead of 30 dolls it will be 2, but that translates to food supplies, too. Instead of 30 dinners in a month, we'll only have 2.

In the year after Maduro took over Venezuela, the average citizen lost 40 pounds.

[–] bizzle@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I could stand to lose 40 pounds honestly

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 3 points 15 hours ago

I've lost 80 in the last 18 months, but it was my choice, not HitlerPig's.

Except a doll is $10 for the crappiest model, meaning were already only getting two dolls in the average budget. With that logic, we'll have to save up for the doll parts and assemble a single doll ourselves.

[–] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 3 points 12 hours ago

It's one doll, Michael, how much could it cost? 10 dollars?

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 28 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

Cause American girls were getting 30 dolls every Christmas.

This guy is such a psychopath that he doesn't even understand how Christmas gifts work.

[–] hovercat@lemmy.blahaj.zone 10 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Big "How much could a banana cost? $10?" moment

[–] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 3 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

If a dollar is good, then lots of dollars is even better. To him, toys are like currency for kids, so when he wanted to buy a doll for Ivanka or Eric, he'd give them 30 of the same doll, rather than a bunch of different toys.

Jr just wanted his daddy's love, which doest exist, so he was shit out of luck.

113 American Girl dolls would be expensive as shit though - I think with all the accessories and accoutrements you’re looking at the price of a decent used car. The newer models are also shittier (less history focused, because Mattel lol)

The books though - they went hard. There was an entire series about about an enslaved girl who escaped to the north with her mom (I wanna say Addie?). Felicity, the American Revolution girl, stole a horse and got told what the consequences could have been (like, iirc it’s like “yeah you could have totally been hanged for that stunt.”)

I was too broke for the dolls, but if you have a kid - the books are A-tier children’s historical fiction.

[–] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 18 points 18 hours ago

The rich will still get 30 and a new sports car

[–] BigBenis@lemmy.world 7 points 16 hours ago

Cutting off your nose to spite China

[–] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 6 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

I don't understand the hard on the right has for China yet they benefit greatly from China's low costs. As soon as the USSR fell and Islamic fundamentalism faded away I just knew the US would be looking for a new boogeyman to keep us distracted and justify defense spending.

[–] calcopiritus@lemmy.world 0 points 8 hours ago

There are many reasons you would be against china.

  1. Not a democracy
  2. Helping Russia in the invasion of Ukraine
  3. Aims to invade Taiwan
  4. You always want some amount of local manufacturing. Relying on a single supplier is never a good idea in any context if you can avoid it.
  5. Helps north Korea
  6. Claims international and other countries waters for itself
  7. Uyghurs
  8. Tibet
  9. Many active border disputes due to territorial expansion aims.
  10. Secret police stations to enforce it's laws outside china
  11. Hong Kong

Low prices doesn't justify any of that.

And that (non-exclusive) list (except the 1st point) is only what affects people outside of china. There's many other reasons to dislike the CCP that only affects the Chinese. Like mass surveillance and censorship.

[–] ipkpjersi@lemmy.ml 5 points 17 hours ago* (last edited 17 hours ago)

The fact that they call it a defense budget and not a military budget kind of says it all too.

I'm all for actually defending your country, of course, but yeah...

I make a point of not listening to what felon rapist traitors say.

[–] cosmicrookie@lemmy.world 6 points 18 hours ago

Bad luck for the ones who could only afford two to start with huh?

[–] skozzii@lemmy.ca 61 points 1 day ago (4 children)

China's economy is still projected to grow while US heads to recession , this guy tries to create his own reality everywhere he goes.

[–] cosmicrookie@lemmy.world 13 points 18 hours ago

China has the whole world they still can sell to. The US has shut the door on all existing and potential partners

Is an anti-consumerism Trump on anyone's bingo card??

[–] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 95 points 1 day ago (17 children)

Even if this were true, a policy that hurts everyone isn't sucessful just because someone else suffers more than you.

[–] cosmicrookie@lemmy.world 5 points 18 hours ago

Isn't this the whole ideology of the US. Always kick downwards?

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

When your worldview is completely transactional, and you believe that literally everything is zero-sum, then you do view that as successful.
