Meta says it funded over 100 VR & mixed reality titles that shipped in 2024, as well as over 200 currently in "active production". [...] These figures were revealed today at GDC 2025 by Meta's Director of Games Chris Pruett, during a talk where he also claimed that opening the store and heavily pushing Horizon Worlds did not meaningfully affect store spending, and revealed that monthly headset usage increased 30% in 2024.

Wild to think they've spent $100B on VR and for tons of people it's probably still a "Beat Saber" machine. I mean, respect to Beat Saber.

Speaking of... Aside from socializing, rhythm, exercise, and sports seem like a reasonable niche market for VR. The Wii sure showed it was possible since it uses the same principles for the controls.

Like Musk, Zuckerberg is just trying to create a world where people actually like him.

Also like Musk, he will fail.

Musk is helping Meta through "at least Zuckerberg isn't Musk" aura.

Until Valve releases the Deckard, or whatever their next iteration VR hardware will be named, they'll have to pry my Valve Index from my cold dead hands. No way in hell would i ever own anything from Meta/FB.

I can't wait to get out :)

At least it's something tangibly useful. Unlike "AI". I'm for it.

Diversify from selling personal data

[–] gt5@lemm.ee 9 points 2 days ago

Unfortunately the VR is just another avenue for them to get data to sell

[–] NoFearFrontier@feddit.org -2 points 2 days ago

Useful from meta, sure buddy.

Meta sucks on the whole but I love my Quest 3.

That's where I'm at. I got one for Christmas and then learned about all of the politicization after the fact. Now when I play Walkabout Mini Golf I have fun, but also hate myself for not throwing it all away.

[–] LiveLM@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

If only we could fully block it from talking to Meta's servers. It's the cheapest headset I can find to purchase but I don't want Meta having a 3D map of my house 🤮

[–] NOT_RICK@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

I’d probably own one if it wasn’t zuccs

[–] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 14 points 3 days ago (1 children)

And I still won't buy your garbage data collection headset. I saw the day coming well in advance when they eventually forced the login with a meta/Facebook account. I'm not interested in that, and even though they removed it their hand was played. I will not invest in that.

[–] dan1101@lemm.ee 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Everyone has a FB account whether they created it or not, and I'm sure Meta found a way to link their VR headsets to your account even if it's not obvious.

[–] nogooduser@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

There are so many people using WhatsApp that have to share their contacts with them to get a remotely usable UI that I’m certain that you’re correct.

The Quest 2 and 3 finally are a properly viable platform that millions of people use, but it still feels like Meta doesn't want it to be a "Microsoft's Xbox" sort of situation, they still want it to be a "Google's Android" situation instead. It's been an utterly bizarre time watching all of this occur in real time as someone that bought her first headset in 2017; their priorities have always been completely misaligned with the achievements they're actually making.

[–] tonytins@pawb.social 4 points 3 days ago

I have the Quest 2 before the rebrand. It was great, loved playing bowling with it, but they really do need move beyond being Daydream on steroids.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Well, it is their money they are burning. Good luck with that.

I don't think there's a total stock market index fund that only omits Meta.

[–] uberdroog@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

That is mostly my experience. I found a few or that meta is not ine of the top investments. Fidelity has a few. When I get home I may post them.

[–] MajorHavoc@programming.dev 1 points 2 days ago

When I get home I may post them.

I would appreciate that.

[–] BackgrndNoize@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Playing games is the thing I almost never do on my Quest 3, I mostly just lie down and watch movies and TV on it, but it's too bulky and uncomfortable for that, the new Bigscreen Beyond 2 looks amazing for that use, unfortunately it costs more than double of Quest 3, I'll save up for it and sell my Quest 3 in the future, cause fuck Zuck
