Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

What a fucking loser. Who does that to their closest ally? Hey Canadians, there are a ton of us in the US that are fucking disgusted by this that also feel helpless. Please don't let this man make you hate all Americans. Trust me, he is pretty talented at dividing people.

[–] PlaidBaron@lemmy.world 101 points 1 year ago (9 children)

Its not a hatred of Americans. Its a hatred of America.

The culture. The arrogance. The lack of respect for other nations. The blatant ignoring of rules and agreements they brokered. The list goes on.

All things Americans have turned a blind eye towards for decades.

So yeah, we know not all Americans are bad but theres no denying this has been allowed to happen.

Right, unfortunately it's not Canadians job to make sure every single American they interact is "one of the good ones."

It's an unfortunate guilt by association, but many, many, many of us Americans exhibit all of those qualities: arrogance, lack of respect for others, blatant ignoring of rules and agreements. Just generally being an asshole bully.

I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but I'm not quite convinced this was a legitimate victory. He mumbled something about "Elon knowing voting machine numbers" or some such on inauguration day. He's letting Elon's kid tell him to STFU on camera and is just sitting there taking it? Nah, something doesn't add up to me.

Oh we're pretty united. When some dipshit from North Dakota says he can't wait to show us why they have the 2nd amendment and "clear out the liberal wackos" at a professional engineering conference, it really ties the population together.

The same 2A pussies who say the guns are to stop gov tyranny have suddenly become silent. I guess they just wanted THEIR preferred form of tyranny.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 11 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

By "tyranny" they mean (1) being expected to pay taxes to enable society's basic functioning, and (2) being expected to treat others with respect.

They want chaos. They figure if you shake the snowglobe hard enough they'll magically move to the top out of their shitty life.

[–] Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

Who does that to their closest ally?

Someone looking to sever ties with that ally. Everything Trump does makes the US weaker - his goal isn't to acquire Canada, it's to damage the US.

Should any attempt be made, I will kill as many Nazis as I can on my way out.

Fuck trump
Fuck maga
Fuck Nazis
Fuck musk

As they say in Iran (and so many other nations), "death to America"

Give me liberty or give me death, eh.

Does he not understand that it will require a full-scale war for that to happen?

[–] xmunk@sh.itjust.works 39 points 1 year ago (5 children)

Not just a full war but constant costs for occupation with a populace with easy and common access to drones, guns, and explosives.

I think it's unlikely that Canada would formally resist and hold the border for long... but Canadians are really fucking pissed about this bullshit.

[–] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 17 points 1 year ago (4 children)

I think it’s unlikely that Canada would formally resist and hold the border for long…

The border will fall very quickly, and that's just expected given the 10:1 outnumbering and the amazing weaponry. Our best play is to let that fall quickly and fight a resistance, should it come to that. It's gonna be horrific.

Ref: Vietnam

Also assuming the US military would go along with it.

[–] floofloof@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

Trump is replacing the top people with fascist loyalists. It's likely the military would cooperate.

People would be making Molotovs in their kitchens immediately.

You would also have partisans in the US that would help Canada.

[–] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

As well they should be. I’m furious about it even though I know it’s absolute bullshit.

If he wants to rename bodies of water to distract people from the real purpose of his occupation of the White House, fine-

But threatening a country just to smoke-and-mirrors his drifting of America? Fucking disgusting.

[–] earphone843@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

And the US military is absolute garbage at fighting guerillas

[–] troybot@midwest.social 16 points 1 year ago

The US declared war on drugs and drugs won

[–] Limonene@lemmy.world 22 points 1 year ago (3 children)

That's the biggest problem. You need either Canada's consent (which he can't get) or to win a war with Canada plus the rest of NATO.

The second problem: it would make way more sense to become 10 or 13 US states. With respect to both area and population. That would be a big disadvantage to his party in congress.

[–] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (4 children)

This is why it’s very evident that it’s a distraction from the grift.

That would be a big disadvantage to his party in congress.

Would it though?

Most of the western provinces are very conservative. They'll just gerrymander everything to give the more liberal sections one or two states and then another 12 states worth of senators and reps that are purely Nazi.

[–] earphone843@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 year ago

Also, hes a dictator so the way people vote is irrelevant.

Turnip and his cronies so desperately want to divert everyone's attention from the dumpster fire they lit that they'll say anything .... me and my moose are on stand by for any invasion.

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 36 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (2 children)

Putin wants the US, Canada, Greenland, and Russia, all under Russian control as the globe heats up.

The Arctic sea will become more important than Panama. Which is why trump is also eyeing Panama.

I'm definitely serious about Scarlet Johansson sitting on my face. That's more likely to happen than Canada becoming part of the US.

Hey Canada, just buy America from trump, tell him he’ll still be CEO, conclude the deal and then fire him.

Thank you.

[–] Cocodapuf@lemmy.world 25 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (7 children)

I'm more interested in becoming a Canadian province.

And I dare say, if the US did officially go to war with Canada, New England (and probably New York) would be likely to switch sides.

And they would in all likelihood bring with them all military bases and forces within their territory.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

Hey Canada! I'm pretty sure you fought us over Michigan and Ohio once. Come and take us please.

He should make Mexico a state and the border crisis will vanish just like that.

[–] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago (1 children)

We should keep going until we reach Antarctica.

I'd really like to think that the governments of states like California, Oregon, Washington, and New York would work with Canada to resist this stupid stunt and offer to instead become canadian provinces. I mean, if we're doing stupid shit about control of borders or whatever, and these states are already being attacked by Trump and giving more to the Fed than they're taking back, why not just offer our GDP to Canada in exchange for a functioning Federal government, with healthcare for our citizens too?

[–] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Time for Canada to start building bunkers along the border. Deep defense. Then weapons caches around the country.

I say do it. Because then whether it comes in as one state or 10, one per province, they'll be blue states. Because they'll all hate Trump for all of this bullshit. I'm sure the Republicans will love it. It's not like they've been fighting tooth and claw to keep Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia from becoming states because they would be blue states, or anything.

[–] T00l_shed@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

I say no, I'm not an American, and I don't want to be one

[–] rottingleaf@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Now thanks to your comment they'll make Canada a territory.

They know. Some Republicans have been talking about making Canada a state with no vote and no representation.
