Ubisoft should get comfortable with not owning my money.

[–] LSNLDN@slrpnk.net 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Ha I really want to see the current Ubisoft reaction to their incredibly shit take from before.

[–] ILikeBoobies@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

It was a good take

For game subscriptions to work people will have to be comfortable not owning games

How is that any less true now?

[–] CaptDust@sh.itjust.works 105 points 4 days ago (1 children)

We're all just getting comfortable not owning games. Ubisoft games, specifically. This is what they asked for, right?

[–] Artyom@lemm.ee 30 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Ubisoft should feel a sense of pride and accomplishment for 1. Stealing the title of worst game publisher and 2. Stealing the title of most evil quote from EA.

https://80.lv/articles/ubisoft-executive-players-should-get-comfortable-with-not-owning-games/

"One of the things we saw is that gamers are used to, a little bit like DVD, having and owning their games. That's the consumer shift that needs to happen. They got comfortable not owning their CD collection or DVD collection. That's a transformation that's been a bit slower to happen. As gamers grow comfortable in that aspect…".

Interpreted as "Players Should Get Comfortable with Not Owning Games"

The real context was they wanted more subscriptions.

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 5 points 3 days ago (2 children)

honestly i see the industry moving in that direction, not unlike the "pride and accomplishment" thing of yesteryear. i hate this so much.

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Ah yes. (Barf) GamePass.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

It seems to be the thing for those adrenaline dopamine shooter games, but why must they abandon the good rpg and strategy games to do only that? I mean in general, they all do.

I bet a new C&C, even isometric, would gain enough for a studio to thrive. But no, subscriptions it is.

As an old game dev I hate this even more.

Pff.

[–] mrfriki@lemmy.world 69 points 4 days ago (1 children)

If only they fired as many CEO as they fire devs.

[–] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 17 points 3 days ago

Thanks to all these bad decisions, hundreds of jobs are gone, our stock is shit, our games aren't selling.

But fortunately, we gave those bad upper management a nice severance package and they'll be taken care of!

Thanks Ubisoft!

Fuck around and find out moment

[–] secret300@lemmy.sdf.org 38 points 4 days ago

Suck for the innocent employees but also fuck Ubisoft. Can't wait for them to crash and burn

[–] menas@lemmy.wtf 34 points 4 days ago

For information, a strike is going one in the video game industry in france, including ubisoft : https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@STJV/113843503849511121

[–] TommySoda@lemmy.world 42 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Man, if the new Assassin's Creed isn't a banger Ubisoft is cooked. They've had nothing but flops for the past 4 years or so. Even the newer Far Cry games kinda flopped.

[–] SpaceRanger13@lemm.ee 6 points 4 days ago (2 children)

FC5 was very interesting, but I definitely lost interest after that.

[–] Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago

5 was cool but I think I got whiplash from how hard the ludo narrative dissonance hit me. At this point I don't even think they realize why FC3 was so well received (which a snarky french games journalist was already joking about when it came out)

[–] Majorllama@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago (2 children)

I think 5 is my overall favorite from the series but 4 is probably the most "far cry" of all the far cry games. I really did not enjoy New Dawn or 6 at all. I actually had to force myself to finish 6. I kept starting it and losing interest after like an hour. I went back and played 4 and 5 again after I beat 6 just because I felt like I needed to wash out the bad taste 6 had left in my mouth.

[–] SpaceRanger13@lemm.ee 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

4 is what got me into the series! I agree it fit most with the previous titles. Good on you for finishing the game. I played a couple hours and never opened it again.

[–] Majorllama@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

You didn't miss out on much. I think 3,4 and 5 is the perfect "trilogy" of far cry games. I love 2 and blood dragon, but they just aren't the same as those 3 strong games.

[–] dan1101@lemm.ee 1 points 3 days ago (2 children)

I liked New Dawn more than I thought I would, played coop.

I thought far cry 6 was good.

[–] Majorllama@lemmy.world 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Was 6 the only Far Cry game you've played? Because I've played all the far cry games and 6 is one of my lowest ranked games from the series personally. I'm curious why you liked 6.

[–] MintyFresh@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It was a large open map rpg with a well polished UI. Decent story, cool aesthetics. Wasn't groundbreaking awesomeness, but we can't all be FNV. What's not to love?

[–] Majorllama@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Did you play any of the other far cry titles or was that your first? Because in a vacuum I could see 6 being fun, but when you go into 6 expecting a game like the other far cry titles it really fell short.

[–] MintyFresh@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)
[–] Majorllama@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (2 children)

That's makes a ton of sense then. Well I would highly recommend 3, 4 and 5 as well, but those games might end up tainting your memory of 6. Or who knows maybe playing 6 first will make you not really like the other ones.

If you were only going to play one other far cry game I would recommend 5 as it's the most recent title while also still feeling like a "proper" far cry game.

[–] Paddzr@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Far cry went down hill after blood dragon. It was already repeat of 3 but the theme carried hard but also was lower priced standalone...

Everything after? No thanks.

[–] Majorllama@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Really? 4 is pretty much regarded as the best one by most fer cry people.

When I made a survey on the far cry subreddit the top 3 games were 5, 4 and 3 was in third place lol.

[–] Paddzr@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

4 went hard on all the map clutter IMO. The setting was alright and villain was just too close to feeling like they're trying to capture Vaas lightning in a bottle type so unfortunately it bounced off me. Which is a shame, as it probably would have been the superior game in 3 didn't happen and was fresh in my memory.

I admit, it is a "me" problem.

You ever try that primal one?

[–] Majorllama@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I played it for an hour at a friend's house. I hated it.

For a game with no guns the melee system is going to get a lot of use. It's incredibly basic and boring. The ranges weapons didn't appeal to me.

I never bought it for myself or played itore than that.

[–] GaMEChld@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What was their latest debacle? I lose track of which gaming company screwed what up.

[–] dipcart@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

NFTs in game. Said they had made the first AAAA game. Then the CEO said gamers have to get used to not owning games, which pissed a lot of people off and was an incredibly dumb thing to say. Ubisoft seems to be very much out of touch with gamers.

They also had their most recent assassins creed game have a choice between a black man and an Asian woman as the main character, so some Gamers™ are upset about that I guess.

[–] GaMEChld@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Ohhhh they were the idiots with the AAAA claim! Haha ok yeah now I remember hearing that and rolling my eyes.

[–] Majorllama@lemmy.world 23 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Couldn't have happened to a better company. Fuck you Ubisoft. I don't care that you have made some of my favorite games ever. You'll never get a fuckin penny from me for the rest of time.

[–] Damage@feddit.it 6 points 4 days ago

It's so sad how they ended up, we need more European companies in this field

[–] Thcdenton@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago
[–] sunzu2@thebrainbin.org 17 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Just slam another launcher on it 🤡

We need more lootboxes

[–] HorribleMonkey@lemmyusa.com 2 points 3 days ago

I think it's time to implement the shovel

[–] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 17 points 4 days ago

Turns out pushing out really high quality games, and then pushing out crap makes people not wanna buy the crap. Your name only carries you so far. But, the executives responsible for this shit will just close up the studio, run away with a golden parachute to the next company they're planning on ruining.

[–] ZeroHora@lemmy.ml 12 points 4 days ago

Feels bad for the developers, but fingers crossed that the new AC is a disaster and Ubisoft is over.

[–] Punchshark@lemmy.ca 11 points 4 days ago

Oh well. Buy the ticket, take the ride

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

All thanks to rainbow six siege not being on linux!

[–] big_slap@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

hey! do you think they'll show anything regarding a siege 2 on Sunday? its the only game I've played religiously since the alpha and I'm hoping they at least do a facelift of the graphics, lol

[–] Sunshine@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 days ago

Sorry I haven’t kept up with the game’s news since 2020.

I always thought the graphics looked perfect hehe =)

[–] Korhaka@sopuli.xyz 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

It's odd to realise other people can also be gamers and I may not even be aware of the games they play, can't even remember the last ubisoft or EA game I bought. Maybe for EA it might be battle for middle earth. Do they make battlefield? Think I got 3 in a humble bundle and some other games.

[–] DebatableRaccoon@lemmy.ca 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

~Oh no. What a shame.~ Moving on...
