Zoomers will never know the annoyance of spending several minutes downloading a playboy photo only to find it won't display because the first version of Mosaic didn't do JPEGs, leading to a futile quest to find some free software to view JPEGs that worked on Windows 3.1.

Zoomers will never know about having to go to the library to get another 30 day AOL trial CD so you never have to actually pay for dial up.

There was a popular image viewer at the time, I was thinking it was IrfanView, but apparently that didn’t exist until 1996 (and still gets updated!).

Bring back image interlacing

Watch the image slowly get less and less blurry instead :3

while progressive jpegs are generally preferred, they do have an issue where towards the end it’s not clear if the image is blurry or if it hasn’t fully loaded yet (more benefits, though)

Youngins will never know what its like to hear the connection dial up tone that sounded like screams of a tortured AI consciousness begging for the release of death. Good times

decentralized platforms take me back, man. back to having to hope your server admin is a cool dude, and waiting patiently for your photos to load.

[-] sweatersocialist@hexbear.net 6 points 6 days ago

You can get the same dial up experience with an old enough phone.
