I just realized that after a certain age I've been attributing Kristofferson's roles to Jeff Bridges in my head. Major L on my part.
Kristofferson as The Dude wouldn't have taken someone peeing on his rug lying down. It really ties the room together!
He also publicly stood up for Shuhada' Sadaqat after she was getting raked over the coals for her (absolutely correct) criticisms of Pope John Paul II and the Catholic Church

He's excellent as the villain in Lone Star also. Not sure how they let Sayles get away with making so many communist-themed movies, but I'm here for it.
I'm sure there were plenty of bootlicker country artists that were around pre 9/11, but it really feels like the country music scene was much more open to non bootlickers. I'm probably getting stuff wrong, but that's what I've really noticed.
You're not wrong. 9/11 killed the last of the good country music. Fortunately we still have Willie Nelson.
