Apparently we aren't allowed to call it that anymore cause it might incite people to behave like Republicans

A nationwide poll last month found that 10 percent of those surveyed said the “use of force is justified to prevent Donald Trump from becoming president.”

Yamagami not only succeeded but survived too

[-] waluigiblunts@hexbear.net 24 points 1 month ago

that's because the american one was adventurism while the other one wasn't. the Japanese assassination had wide popular support and led to lasting reform, which proves that the action was not adventurism at all. but with the attempted assassination on trump, nothing will fundamentally change.

[-] MaeBorowski@hexbear.net 24 points 1 month ago

Nah, the Abe assassination was still adventurism. It was still a single person acting alone and not as part of any organization. It's a fortunate turn of events that the action ended up being appreciated enough that some reform happened as a result, but that was not a predictable outcome. In fact, the would-be Trump assassin had reason to believe he would have had a ton of popular support had he succeeded, given the Trump=Hitler and must be stopped at any cost rhetoric (if not action) by liberals. Both of them were definitely adventurisms.

[-] Speaker@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago

So what I'm hearing is we need to do more adventurism just in case after the fact it turns out not to have been adventurism. knight-nod

Im p sure the Japanese were also largely the same reaction were getting here

From government officials absolutely, but interestingly public opinion on Shinzo Abe turned on him in the aftermath of the assassination. A majority of Japanese people opposed giving him a state funeral, and the government ended up passing legislation to help victims of the Unification Church in direct response to the shooter's stated motives.

I don't think trump would be too different tbh. The media can crow all they want, a ton of people hate his guts enough to not be mad if he died.

Though some subset of trump supporters would probably try to start a civil war if he died, and it didn't seem like Abe had a lot of fans that diehard

[-] Mokey@hexbear.net 3 points 1 month ago

I remember vividly JP people on a language sharing site i frequent were like "Oh no shinzo abe :((((" when he died

[-] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago

A bunch of moonies got outed and publicly shamed or had assassination attempts on them due to their connections too. Good read https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2023/10/shinzo-abe-assassination-japan-unification-church-moonies/675114/
