DARPA: "we just finished playing Horizon: Zero Dawn and honestly, we think we can make this idea work."

[-] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 53 points 4 months ago

Obligatory "fuck Ted Faro"

It's legit scary to see tech approach the point where private companies might develop systems that could and in some way are endangering humanity as a species, and all their decision-makers are concerned with is corporate success.

[-] No_Eponym@lemmy.ca 10 points 4 months ago

... to see tech approach the point...

Big oil would like a word, alstarting in 1950 at least.

[-] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 14 points 4 months ago

Not to mention literally researching global warming before anyone else bothered, verifying it is happening and that humanity is causing it, then spending decades gaslighting our entire species into widely believing it isn't.

[-] MindTraveller@lemmy.ca 5 points 4 months ago

We knew about global warming since 1900. We just didn't care.

Unless.

My god, what a cunt.

[-] NeryK@sh.itjust.works 32 points 4 months ago

Well they are still missing the self replicating part... But you know, give it some time.

Apparently its the other way around. This tech is old: https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2009/jul/19/robots-research

News to me. I loved the game andI really thought the plot was original.

[-] juergen@lemmy.sdf.org 88 points 4 months ago

I love how the quote cuts off right before "only goal".

[-] Aurenkin@sh.itjust.works 53 points 4 months ago

Oh I assumed it was "our problem"

[-] xantoxis@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

OK I also briefly thought "our problem" but I'm actually PRETTY CONCERNED about the words "only goal" when I really think about it? "Only", as in "Yeah, feeding on humanity is definitely ONE thing we're shooting for, but come on guys, there's lots of applications"

[-] Rooskie91@discuss.online 47 points 4 months ago

Excited for IRL Horizon Zero Dawn.

[-] BurgerPunk@hexbear.net 6 points 4 months ago

At least in Horizon they solved the climate crisis first, before creating the ribits that would wipe out all life

Uhh I played this game. It's literally the plot of ::: spoiler Title Spoiled game :::

[-] AnyOldName3@lemmy.world 21 points 4 months ago

Your spoiler tag isn't working.

[-] Neato@ttrpg.network 7 points 4 months ago

Yeah I can't get any of them to work. Do you know what Lemmy uses?

The format is ::: spoiler and a title on the same line.

Content on new lines, then ::: to end it.

[-] Neato@ttrpg.network 5 points 4 months ago

I've tried every variation and it's not working. This is definitely the most complicated spoiler tag system I've seen.

[-] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 5 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

They look like thisIt's an expandable full-width deal. The spoiler start tag has to be on its own line, and the same goes for the ending three commas.

MelodiousFunk has replied with a cleartext example.

[-] Neato@ttrpg.network 3 points 4 months ago

Interesting. I'm using boost and your comment isn't spoiler tagged for me. That's also how mine is currently formatted. Shame since this app has a spoiler tag button that appears to match the format.

[-] MentalEdge@sopuli.xyz 6 points 4 months ago

I use Thunder, full support here.

Has no one played Horizon Zero Dawn?

[-] No_Eponym@lemmy.ca 9 points 4 months ago

I guess we are in that timeline. Tbh, so many things make a lot of sense now.

[-] Spacehooks@reddthat.com 9 points 4 months ago

Someone put bullets in Ted faro. Literally screwed humanity as a whole...twice.

Onion? No? Great...

Next up "researchers wondered what would happen if they put AI to a machine that can consume humans for energy"

[-] Erasmus@lemmy.world 14 points 4 months ago

Now just make them sentient and self replicating and….

[-] Gakomi@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

You either get Horizon Zero Down or replicators from Star Gate

[-] Zoot@reddthat.com 4 points 4 months ago

Or paperclips!

[-] McWizard@feddit.de 11 points 4 months ago

So it's not supposed to be used to eat the dead, good. OMG. It's supposed to eat the life ones!

[-] Hestia@hexbear.net 10 points 4 months ago

Apparently the robot is designed to be vegan.

But we all know a robot that feasts on the corpses of genocide victims isn't too far fetched.

[-] Asafum@feddit.nl 5 points 4 months ago

We now have a team. The flamethrower dog robot that cooks for the corpse eater.

What the fuck kind of future is this?

[-] lolcatnip@reddthat.com 10 points 4 months ago

If I'm gonna be eaten by a robot I'd much rather be dead first.

[-] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 4 points 4 months ago

These robots don’t do that part. They will build new robots to make corpses for them.

[-] Shayeta@feddit.de 10 points 4 months ago

Finally! A productive solution to mass graves!

[-] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 8 points 4 months ago

[-] Gorillatactics@hexbear.net 4 points 4 months ago

We're getting closer to a real life paperclip maximizer.
