The pineapple (Ananas comosus) is a tropical plant with an edible fruit; it is the most economically significant plant in the family Bromeliaceae.
The pineapple is native to South America, where it has been cultivated for many centuries. The introduction of the pineapple plant to Europe in the 17th century made it a significant cultural icon of luxury. Since the 1820s, pineapple has been commercially grown in greenhouses and many tropical plantations. The fruit, particularly its juice, has diverse uses in cuisines and desserts.
Pineapples grow as a small shrub; the individual flowers of the unpollinated plant fuse to form a multiple fruit. The plant normally propagates from the offset produced at the top of the fruit or from a side shoot, and typically matures within a year.

This is a small rant. Don’t mind me. I’m just a little pissy right now.
CW: The following paragraphs discuss some touchy subjects but don’t go far into detail about them. Suicidal ideation alluded to as well.
I’ve been around these parts for a very long time. Over ten years now in total if you include the subreddit when it was around. To this day, I still don’t quite understand the general culture that were centered around.
Like I thought this community was built from general empathy and attempting to minimize issues for others. Things such as requiring CWs for touchy topics (e.g. meat, suicidal ideation, and the like) was always a thing that seemed central to how hexbear in particular was built. Empathy really being the central theme. Seemingly.
Gods save me if I’m not reminded quite often that it’s not the case. Particularly getting pretty ratioed in that topic involving the new Kelly comic being the newest example. Another being having some folks minimizing SA (this one was a bit ago). And the last time I left the site was someone triggering me to the lowest point in my life. I’m genuinely glad I’m still alive after that. The individual in question blocked me and had no repercussions enacted upon them. I will forever be sour about that interaction and I genuinely have no idea why I came back here after that, but here I am.
What I’m saying here ultimately is that, in my eyes, admin and mods need to consider a few things. One is they need to iron out the rules a little better, figuring out what falls where and where boundaries exist. Two is that the rules then need to actually be implemented and proper punishment meted out against offending individuals. Cause honestly, just as it always has been, things are not done evenly here and never has been. And really, empathy should be a central theme for this community, all things considered.
I'll add the amount of users who engage in bad faith, is quite disappointing too.
There's a few who have faced no kind of cool down period or moderation when I believe they should have. Some engage in name calling, fed/wrecker jacketing, and overall total disrespect to other hexbear users trying to engage in healthy debate, or weren't even talking to them to begin with. Huge turnoff for me and I've pretty much stopped using the site because of it
Yeah there's just entire sections of the site I don't engage with and try to avoid. I'll see a thread and know that nothing good will come of it and hide it immediately. It sucks because a lot of the time it's a topic that I think is worth discussing or whatever, I just don't want to argue about it.
Also sidenote: its good to see you around again!
Aw thanks comrade
Yeah I think I'm probably going to do the same as you now, or maybe just block people. I love to debate but when it turns to arguing/name calling, I'm too old for that shit lol
I agree, I've seen some pretty nasty mudslinging with no repercussions
I'm sorry that you've been made to feel like not engaging with the discussions on the site, seen a few have been made to feel the same as you.
You're not wrong, a lot of folks end up leaving. Seems like there's a purge every year or something. I'm just gonna hide in the general mega from now on
The mega is pretty chill it seems, at least less toxic. (ᵕ—ᴗ—)
I agree there should be a CW added to that Kelly comic, it's been an established rule since day one on this site. But that said:
It might be an incredibly bad idea to even engage with you on this, but frankly, this is a HUGE red flag, and to be even more frank, you don't sound like the hero of this story.
Another one of the fundamental, day-one rules of the site is that no one owes you an interaction, and you have the right not to talk to people who distress you in any way. It's why we have anti-debate-bro rules. It's why we have the disengage rule. It's why we have a block button (which should have been a day-one feature of the site, and if it had been, a ton of early drama could have been avoided, but I digress.) Why would you expect the mods to punish them for that?
I'm sorry if this is not true, because I don't want to hurt your, or anyone else's feelings, but that bit in your post jumped out at me.
I’m being vague with it cause it’s very personal, but I’ll just be 100% with you on what happened
CW: Discussing topics such as gender dysphoria revolving around pregnancy and suicidal ideation
I’m actually trans. I hide it because the trans community was really soured for me from this interaction. I also stealth in all ways in person for safety reasons. Least to say I’m very thankful I’m capable of doing so.
The individual in question didn’t properly CW a somewhat common trigger amongst the trans community. In my case, it’s the complete inability to get pregnant and have children. So why did I interact? I was a moderator of the trans community and asked them to please properly format their post so as to not trigger others such as myself. They outright refused and accused me of abusing my power when I told them I would remove such posts in the future. They then publicly asked how to block me and blocked me. In moderator chat off-site, others said I was fine, but nothing was done at all. No warnings. No backing up. Nothing. All things considered, it sent me into one of the worst depressive episodes in my life. It was several months of crushing depression through a fucking SSRI no less. I mean, I almost committed suicide. I am thankful for those around me to say the least. I am thankful I’m still alive.
So that was that story. I don’t like recalling it. I don’t like thinking about it. I’m sure if I gave my past names, that someone can vouch for this. However, it’s such a unique incident that kristina probably knows who I am.
Idk. At the end of the day, I just want everyone to feel safe in this space. CTH and Hexbear have been a part of my life for a long time. It oft feels more like the message boards of yore rather than something like reddit. I just want people to be able to interact with each other with empathy in mind, you know?
Okay, it doesn't sound like you were wrong, and I hope I didn't pre-judge you too harshly. I just don't want the right to disengage or block to be weakened, because that would create all kinds of ways to harass people that we all decided should be forbidden from very early on in this site. You're right that everyone should feel safe.
You’re perfectly fine and had every right in the world to have thought the way you thought. People being intentionally vague like that oft lends to them hiding something incriminating. So I get it. I’d dig out the post in question if I thought I could find it, but I doubt I can. The megathreads back then were like 1000 comments strong.
I don’t think that ability should be weakened either. I just want people to have the ability to avoid seeing content that can send their mental faculties into the Mariana Trench. I worry cause I know we all have our proverbial daemons and no one deserves to go through what I had to.
just wanna say i remember when that happened and I'm really sorry you had to go through that and i'm glad you're still here comrade. i really relate cause i have a (while not the same but similar) very bad trigger about that kind of topic too that can fuck me up hard for weeks. and i've felt unsafe to participate in communities here too when content warnings weren't taken seriously. content warnings are so important and necessary. you deserved better in how that was handled
Thank you very much for the kind words. I really appreciate them. I am honestly surprised anyone outside of the directly involved remembers it. Thank you.
Hopefully in the future it can get better. For yours and everyone’s sakes tbh.
I kinda always felt like we were trying to dialectical use poor taste to critique neoliberal culture and to attempt to toughen ours souls to the required level to support the level of conflict required to maintain a revolutionary spirit.
Part of that being creating care and love for each other as comrades to endure the harsh reality of the world.
So I feel like there is a grey area in our culture where that synthesis can lead to hurt feelings. I have been thinking about it. Do you feel there is a place for a more structured reconciliation process here?
Hard to say. I always saw things differently, but I also never engaged in the debate nonsense. That kept me from being exposed to a lot of things. So perhaps I'm missing some parts of the whole just from my own personal perspective. I still think guiding the community with empathy would be the safest, most proper way forward for such a diverse community.
In what regard exactly? If it's just getting people to self crit, there's a comm for that already. Doesn't get used all that often.
