If you have any questions, please ask. I love yapping.

yapLet's say we have some periodic function f. The goal is to represent it as a bunch of sine waves. This is called a Fourier series (FS).

The FS coefficients are given by

            ⌠2⋅π
         1 ⎮ -i⋅k⋅x
f̂(k) = ─── ⎮ f(x)⋅e dx
        2⋅π ⌡0

for whole numbers k. We can then approximate the original function with

  n
 ___
 ╲ -i⋅k⋅x
 ╱ f̂(k)⋅e
 ‾‾‾
k = -n

and make the approximation better by making n larger.

For non-periodic functions, we can still get an approximation! The Fourier Transform (FT) uses a continuous range of frequencies instead of whole numbers, and the sum is replaced by an integral (the inverse FT).

FT's are used everywhere, for example in signal processing and spectroscopy. If a recording contains an annoying high-pitched noise, we can apply the FT and filter the unwanted frequencies. Spectroscopy separates light into its different wavelengths. By comparing the resulting spectral lines with known measurements, we can determine which elements and molecules are present in stars and planets, for example.

idk what more to add ._.

Eating a cosmic crisp apple. Pretty good but not as mind-blowing as I expected based on nl-smug

[–] SuperZutsuki@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Now those are some good fucking apples

[–] SickSemper@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago

interesting i’ll have to check it out

They're the best for their price every time where I live. They're like half the price of honey crisp or cosmic crisp and about 75% as tasty. They're the people's fancy apple

I could be persuaded to put a pink lady in my mouth

[–] SuperZutsuki@hexbear.net 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I am a cosmic enjoyer. I think honeycrisp is too sweet.

[–] SickSemper@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago

reasonable take!

something that was mind blowing to me personally was eating a gum drop grape. Literally tastes like candy!

it really depends though because the flavor of the fruit seems dependent on the conditions in which it was grown, so some might be more flavorful than others

I've got to try those, they sound good.

[–] Arahnya@hexbear.net 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I think there's another "candy grape" called cotton candy, lol

I like cosmic crisp apples, but as as someone who's never liked apples much I think it's funny that multiple universities have poured millions of R&D funding into creating a really good apple, meanwhile peaches, pears, nectarines etc are just naturally amazing catgirl-happy

Those are decent, although my fav might be red delicious but I hear people diss them saying the name is misleading trans-sad
