I mean, he was a victim of the wrath of Poseidon, not that much you can do about that when at sea.
Which sort of paints Poseidon as incompetent. You'd imagine that the God of the sea would be able to reliably kill people at sea.
Sounds intentional to have Odysseus suffer and long for home, instead of killing him off quickly. The gods want to be entertained as well.
Then why not sink his ship five minutes from his home?
Poseidon was pissed off, not a complete asshole. Like not 100% anus - a bit less.
Zeus wouldn't let him. Odysseus was fated to return home eventually.
