I could never have the opposite politics of my spouse. Sure, we may disagree slightly on some matters an nuance, but a world view in direct conflict with mine would be irreconcilable.

If we're talking about politics like loudness ordinances and funding for road projects and whether the fire department needs a millage we can share the same values or same values with different priority orders no problem on the different politics.

If we're talking about whether some people deserve rights or racism or if laws don't apply to some people then it's more than a politics difference, it's a values difference.

When politics felt like shades of policy disagreements I could see it. Now it is either you support democracy and human rights or you're supporting pedophiles and genocide. Not much common ground anymore.

[–] bobbear@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

Most people vote for the pedophiles, though. Either through the ballot or with their wallet. They're in politics on all sides. They're in business. They're on the computer they use every day. The car they drive.

And human rights. Goes out the window the moment somebody has a bad case of the sniffles. Or when brown people can be blamed for pretty much anything and everything.

It's almost as if, the main problem isn't the corrupt deranged elite, but the system and boot lickers that uphold them.

The Overton window has been busy.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 5 points 19 hours ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

Is it a roadrunner? Is it a train? No it's the Overton window going 120 in the slow lane.

[–] EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world 4 points 19 hours ago

A politically charged tv channel with specifically that goal running for three generations will do that.

My partner is just slightly less left than me and I struggle with it some days. I can't even imagine trying to date someone on the other side.

[–] KeenFlame@feddit.nu 3 points 22 hours ago

Nobody can. Egomanic psycopathy isn't attractive to anyone but the most indoctrinated birds

[–] binarytobis@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sometimes I think about dating again after so long, and I imagine my girlfriend wanting to wiretap our place with an Alexa in the kitchen.

My wife finally gave when the latest round of spying stuff happened. I've been trying to get around to building new ones for home assistant that all happen on prem, but there's a lot of knowledge gap there.

Seriously I don't understand how some people can handle their best friend and roommate being a POS

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 14 points 1 day ago
  1. Fear of making near friends / difficulty making the new friends
  2. Actual naivety of thinking the POS behaviour doesn't matter
  3. Weirdly, peer pressure from other people? For instance you might want to distance yourself from one friend and you are then peer pressured to be in situations with them more often by the other friends, told to build your tolerance of them

... 1 + 2 also applies to romantic relationships!

Edit: just realised 'best friend AND roomate' is just a way of referring to a spouse. But there it is, there's the low-down in my opinion.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You bond over other shared interests, like video games and drinking.

As silly as bonding over race, especially when we disagree on basic morality, but that's sadly what happens. 😔

I'm so glad my parents and brother have (nearly) the same politics as me. Having to regularly deal with trumpers (without being able to laugh in their faces as with my co-workers) would be a perpetual torment. My brother did have an inexplicable phase of loving Putin, but that passed quickly.

[–] Mrkawfee@feddit.uk 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Same. I couldn't respect someone with hardened, opposite politics to me. Sex would be satisfying though.

[–] shawn1122@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago)

For which party and why? I would contend many people enjoy sex most when their partner is someone they respect, provided they've developed to a certain level of maturity. Perhaps you have an alternate rationale.

Even within dom/sub and other BDSM variations I would hope both partners respect each other because without that you've entered a very toxic and destructive space.

You never had a good hate-fuck?

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 1 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

All fun and games until you end up pregnant.

Very little chance of that 😂🏳️‍⚧️

It doesn't seem appealing tbh
