Honestly if you bought a fridge with a giant touchscreen on it you deserve this. Although the ultimate dickwad thing to do would be for landlords to install these and for ad companies to pay landlords to display ads on them. I'm actually surprised that racket isn't happening already

To be fair it's actually becoming harder and harder to buy non shitty things. Like I may need a new water heater. Literally haven't been able to find one at local stores without a wifi card in em. I'm like no I don't need someone trying to DDoS some shit usiny my water heater. I need it to make water hot. But apparently that requires WiFi these days.

Still can get a fridge without a screen though. For now.

Makes zero sense, on what planet does boiling water need fucking wifi? You want to turn it up or down, mankind has already got that, it's called a "knob".

[–] NinaPasadena@hexbear.net 16 points 4 months ago (3 children)

Ya the box adverts in store are like "control your heater from your phone!!", "smart home integration!", "save money on while on vacation!".

But yes we can solve all this with a fuckin knob. I have never ounce looked at my phone and thought: damn it'd be sick if I could change water temperature from the same device I read peoples bad takes on all day.

You know what a phone can do that a knob that’s attached to a thing can never ever do? Get lost. Get broken because you tripped with it in your hands. Get it stolen because it’s worth hundreds of fucking dollars. Lose it in the club because you went ham on Tequila shots.

The fucking audacity of this situation.

But yes we can solve all this with a fuckin knob.

what about the other 50% of people?

A spyware app which you could only get from google play store/apple and refuses to work if you rooted your phone or something and the knob gets removed as innovation a few years later so you need a phone thay can handle a hot shower and it uses chatgpt which does as it pleases and apologizes after burning you only to repeat it again and maybe it has ads too that you have to wait for especially when there is soap in your eyes. There are 5 different subscription plans and the software updates are supported for 3 years after which it bricks itself and redditors scold you on the internet for having the gall to complain after you bought a poor people model that is 2 years old because because your bank will only loan you money for the this one at 295% interest rate. dean-malice

But what if you're in the shower and want to say "Alexa, please increase water temperature by 1.3°C"?? What then, luddite? smuglord

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 8 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Okay Dave, increasing water heat by 1,300 degress!

[–] NinaPasadena@hexbear.net 6 points 4 months ago

It's so fucking wild because this does seem to be the alleged value proposition. And I'm like that's nowhere near enough reason to just add another iot piece of shit into my house.

Like if I end up having to buy one of these Imma dig inside the moment I get it and rip out the network card. Already did that to an ac unit
