The trailer for the Trump biopic coming out soon has a line that explains a lot. "No matter what happens, claim victory." (I may be paraphrasing)
Trump obviously took those words to heart, because it is something he lives by. It may actually be the only thing he really believes in.
Trump in all likelihood has known people laugh at him for decades. This isn't news to him. This is the same strategy he's always had. No matter what, claim victory. Reality isn't important. He will keep saying he won, always, no matter what happens.
Strong Bad said it best: "It's like, even when we win, he wins."
Aw, deep cuts what cut deep. 🥹
Come back Ali. Come back, Ali’s sister.
For the illiterate.
With Trump, I think this goes way deeper than a learned strategy to claim victory no matter what. Trump has narcissistic personality disorder, and his brain can't conceive of a situation where he doesn't win. At his core are such deep-seated insecurities about himself that the only way his brain can cope with itself is to never show vulnerability by creating a fictional narrative in which he's the winner all the time. It would be incredibly pathetic if it weren't so terrifying. Someone like him who wasn't born into extreme wealth would be lonely and broke right now
He was even mocked in the comic pages of the newspapers back in the 80s
the worst thing is his followers don't know the difference and think he always wins
