Seven people who allegedly suffered injuries after a door-sized panel blew off mid-air file suit against airline and manufacturer

Seven passengers of the harrowing Alaska Airlines flight that had to make an emergency landing after a door-sized panel blew off the plane are suing the airline and the aircraft’s manufacturer Boeing.

One of the plaintiffs is Cuong Tran, a passenger who was seated in a window seat right behind the door plug that blew out mid-air, causing rapid depressurization in the cabin of the Boeing 737 Max 9 jet. He was saved by his seatbelt as air rushed out of the hole, tearing off a pair of socks and one shoe and sucking away his iPhone.

He and six other plaintiffs, who suffered physical injuries and feared for their lives during their incident, according to their attorneys, are suing Alaska, the airline, Boeing, the plane’s manufacturer, and its supplier Spirit Aerosystems.

Man who was almost sucked off

[–] MeatPilot@lemmy.world 52 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Boeing could plead it was just edging, because he never got off completely. Knocked his socks off though.

You are a terrible person. I salute you.

He was saved by his seatbelt as air rushed out of the hole, tearing off a pair of socks and one shoe and sucking away...

[–] foggy@lemmy.world 43 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Wait

Both socks... One shoe???

What kind of inter dimensional black hole opened up on this plane?

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 37 points 2 years ago

He was wearing a total of 3 socks, one on the outside of his shoe. As was the custom at the time.

[–] Darkard@lemmy.world 13 points 2 years ago

One foot sock, one knob sock.

To keep his tackle warm on the flight.

Such a good clickbait title. The actual article is like, yeah of course he'd sue, it would be weird if he didn't. I wanted to know about the guy in the bathroom about to join the mile high club who's suing for getting cockblocked

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

I'd sue too!

[–] ours@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

Aspiring Mile-High Club member sues

[–] nieceandtows@programming.dev 2 points 2 years ago

I for some reason didn't see 'was', and was re-reading the title half a dozen times to make sure I understood it right.

Suing Boeing? Better hope he doesn't get suicided

I live near multiple major Boeing facilities and so a large percentage of the local population works there. Boeing, due to their hiring practices and sort of employee abuse and such, basically create (or attract) a creepy cult of weird psychotic narcissists, especially the white-collar workers. Not everyone that works there is like that, but the ones that work there for 20+ years almost always are. I have numerous relatives and know lots of other people who work there and they are all creepy, balding, extremely self-important and abusive people. Now other people may pipe in and say that they have a very different experience, but that's been mine. Oh, and they all want everyone they come across to know that they work at Boeing. It's a core part of their identity. They are desperate to impress everyone.

My most recent experience with long-term Boeing employees was my psychopath uncle-in-law seemingly tried to murder his wife when she decided to divorce him after 20 years of abuse, mostly because it would have looked bad at work and made it harder for him to make "executive".

Honestly I relish in the lowering status of Boeing and its employees. It's been a long time coming. They make some shitty jets these days, they have shitty business practices, there's something clearly wrong with their corporate culture, and their cult of creeps have been a pain in everyone else's asses for many years.

I guess that's all a long way of saying that Boeing probably doesn't even have to hire anyone to kill whistleblowers. I would not be shocked if a "good employee" took it upon themselves to do it.

When I was a teenager a Boeing employee vaguely threatened to disappear me. It was pretty funny.

[–] ripcord@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

What...led up to that? And what'd they say more specifically?

His son had a disagreement with a friend. I took my friend over to talk to his other friend. We stayed in the car. Homie's dad decided to come talk to us. When I said "sir, you're acting like a two year old" he got all "I work at Boeing [union nonsense] [something about burying bodies]".

[–] BobGnarley@lemm.ee 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Guess he wasn't kidding huh? Lol

[–] PsychedSy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 years ago

I fucking wish.

[–] stoly@lemmy.world -1 points 2 years ago

I think you described engineers in general.

[–] Winter8593@lemmy.world 30 points 2 years ago

Careful, he may accidentally commit suicide the day before testifying!

[–] DrBob@lemmy.ca 24 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Did he put the other shoe back on after losing both socks? WTF is going on here?

[–] theworstshepard@lemmynsfw.com 7 points 2 years ago

He was wearing the socks on his hands of course.

If I almost got sucked off on a plane and was left to fend for myself, I think I might sue as well. 😛

(Is there a legal precedent for a pain and suffering judgment being rendered for blue balls?)

[–] derf82@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago

I mean, I’d be more surprised is he DIDNT sue.

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

What?!?! The TOS on the ticket doesn’t force him into arbitration?

[–] ProfessorProteus@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Not sure of you're being sarcastic, but I wouldn't be surprised if Boeing had an arbitration clause for almost dying due to their negligence. There nothing too depraved for them.

[–] Zachariah@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I couldn’t be more sarcastic.

[–] dangblingus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 years ago

Now that's customer service!

[–] nutsack@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago

I hope that one day I too can win the plane suck Lottery

[–] zcd@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 years ago

Better get him in witness protection ASAP as possible

There is no way that headline wasn't 100% intentional.
