Clathrus archeri is not known to be toxic, however, consuming this fungus would not be enjoyable. Due to the rotting stench of stinkhorns, culinary application is not a common thought. There is also no record of the fungus being treated as a delicacy.

Lol. Damn near every fungi on Wikipedia has a toxicology section. But this one is just like, No one would ever think about eating this so who fucking knows?

All fungi are edible. Some are only edible once.

Yeah that one

[–] fossilesque@mander.xyz 18 points 2 years ago (1 children)

This one obviously doesn't want us to eat it haha.

[–] moistclump@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

Might be a hell of a trip though.

[–] lingh0e@sh.itjust.works 12 points 2 years ago (1 children)

So yeah, it's likely no one has ever tried to eat one... but I feel pretty confident someone's tried to fuck one.

I have a valuable cylinder stuck in a octopus stinkhorn and I can't get it out, what do I do?

[–] TechieDamien@lemmy.ml 3 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Rip and tear until it is done

That's crazy. There are people out there who intentionally rot meat in order to eat it, but this one comes pre-smelly and it's not actually rotten and nobody eats it? That's fucked up

They are really cool, I saw one in the wild in southern Germany last fall

[–] selinson@mander.xyz 59 points 2 years ago (5 children)

[–] moistclump@lemmy.world 24 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Gah. Looks like forest floor rotting star fish.

[–] selinson@mander.xyz 11 points 2 years ago

It sure smelled like that. (;ŏ﹏ŏ)

[–] cheesymoonshadow@lemmings.world 6 points 2 years ago

Appropriate name.

[–] cheesymoonshadow@lemmings.world 17 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Omg if I came across that while hiking in the woods without knowing what it was, I would probably hightail it out of there, all the while looking back to make sure it wasn't following me.

[–] mindbleach@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 years ago

Don't worry, they have no sight or hearing. They can only sense fear.

[–] mouserat@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

How did you not run away screaming? Is this fungus common knowledge? I've never seen it and I am happy to have read this post before stumbling on this another dimension opening strawberry-red nightmare

[–] selinson@mander.xyz 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

xD I read a lot of books about nature when I was a kid and therefore knew of this fungus for some time. I always wanted to see this one, too: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clathrus_ruber
