Mr Giuliani filed for bankruptcy last month after he was ordered to pay $148m to Georgia election workers he defamed

Donald Trump’s former lawyer Rudy Giuliani has listed a claim against the one-term president over unpaid legal fees in a new bankruptcy filing.

The ex-New York City mayor includes a “possible claim for unpaid legal fees against Donald J Trump.” in the 26 January filing, which states that the amount is “undetermined.”

Mr Giuliani filed for bankruptcy last month, days after a federal judge ordered him to “immediately” pay more than $148m to a pair of Georgia election workers a jury determined he defamed.

Mr Giuliani represented Mr Trump in a string of unsuccessful lawsuits contesting the results of the 2020 election that he lost to Joe Biden.

Mr Trump’s legal fees owed to Mr Giuliani have previously been reported. The New York Times wrote in August 2023 that “Mr Trump has never explicitly told Mr Giuliani why he is effectively stiffing him, but the former president has pointed out that he lost the cases related to the election.”

looks like giuliani better get really comfortable in the bed he made

Under “tax refunds owed to you,” the filing also mentions “Overpayment of taxes from The Mask Singer” in California for more than $10,000. Mr Giuliani performed on “The Masked Singer” in 2022, in which he sang “Bad to the Bone.”

This timeline is just too weird.

[–] scottywh@lemmy.world 24 points 9 months ago

I'm really curious how much the shit stain got paid for the one or two episodes on the Masked Singer that it could be possible to have overpaid his taxes related to it by over $10K.

Do you think reality has writers strikes

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 9 points 9 months ago

Apparently our reality is being written by a crappy AI

[–] ramenshaman@lemmy.world 8 points 9 months ago

I really enjoyed the first couple seasons of that show but then it abruptly went downhill pretty fast.

Everybody predicted this but him. Trump never pays!

Back in the day, Rudy slandered an EMS crew because they were following the established protocols.

He never apologized, and actually tried to play off that he was 'saving' the patient.

I swear it's getting harder and harder to guess which news article is from The Onion and which one is not lol

[–] SPRUNT@lemmy.world 15 points 9 months ago

In this case, an article from The Onion wouldn't be nearly as funny.

[–] BossDj@lemm.ee 43 points 9 months ago (2 children)

"Rudy Giuliani listed a claim against the one-term president"

Ha!

[–] Nastybutler@lemmy.world 14 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I caught that too. Nice little jab in case Orange Julius Caesar reads it

[–] Riccosuave@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Alright, this is the only Trump nickname I can actually fuck with. All the other ones are pretty cringe to me, but this one I like.

[–] nilloc@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 9 months ago

Not even Cheeto Mussolini?

OJC is pretty solid though. Especially while his buddies are (possibly) stabbing him in the back.

[–] brbposting@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I thought that was funny, so I checked the source again, leaving me disappointed - feeling that they were just providing context for international readers.

Am I wrong (it was indeed a jab over the Stop The Steal mindset)?

[–] BossDj@lemm.ee 4 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

The article, if I recall, used multiple such phrases in lieu of pronouns and articles just to make the story flow a little more nicely.

Still made me snort.

[–] NegativeLookBehind@kbin.social 34 points 9 months ago

If only there had been some previous examples of Trump not paying people, maybe this could've been avoided?

[–] tacosanonymous@lemm.ee 29 points 9 months ago

I didn’t know you could not pay your lawyers if they lose. Neat.

[–] aew360@lemm.ee 26 points 9 months ago (1 children)

If he agrees to testify for immunity or a reduced sentence, Trump would be fucked

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 1 points 9 months ago

Too late for that

[–] SupraMario@lemmy.world 16 points 9 months ago (1 children)

This is good though, it means the infighting has started to finally reach the top. The rats will eat each other now.

checks watch

C’mon, c’mon!

[–] Steve@lemmy.world 23 points 9 months ago (1 children)

How was this guy a mayor?
Trump has a decades long history of not paying his debts. I assumed all his lawyers would insist on payment in full first.

[–] WarmSoda@lemm.ee 17 points 9 months ago (1 children)

He was able to ride high off of 9/11.

[–] pandapoo@sh.itjust.works 20 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

He was mayor during 9/11, not because of it.

That aside, you're right about him coasting off 9/11 for quite a while. His failed Presidential bid was basically him spamming "9/11” from start, to finish.

He had the same problem as Meatball Ron: the more the GOP base voters heard him and saw him, the more they were repulsed by him.

Oh no, he's not getting paid!

[–] Gradually_Adjusting@lemmy.world 18 points 9 months ago (2 children)

He doesn't even know how much he's not getting paid apparently

[–] Nastybutler@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I thought that was weird too. What kind of attorney doesn't keep track of his billable hours? Oh, right. We're talking about Gouliani

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Donald Trump’s former lawyer Rudy Giuliani has listed a claim against the one-term president over unpaid legal fees in a new bankruptcy filing.

The ex-New York City mayor includes a “possible claim for unpaid legal fees against Donald J Trump.” in the 26 January filing, which states that the amount is “undetermined.”

Mr Giuliani filed for bankruptcy last month, days after a federal judge ordered him to “immediately” pay more than $148m to a pair of Georgia election workers a jury determined he defamed.

The newspaper reported that the former president told his aides that he didn’t want Mr Giuliani to receive “a dime” unless he succeeded in the case, and noted that $340,000 had been paid to Mr Giuliani — through Trump’s Save America PAC — to cover some of his ex-lawyer’s legal debt.

The filing shows that “Joseph Biden Defamation Action” is also listed for an “undetermined” amount after Mr Giuliani sued the president in October after he used the phrase “Russian pawn” during a presidential debate in 2020.

But the record also shows the fund has spent more than $500,000 on his legal fees, leaving $180,000 in cash on hand.

The original article contains 384 words, the summary contains 193 words. Saved 50%. I'm a bot and I'm open source!

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 6 points 9 months ago (2 children)

You know, this may well be an avenue in which to undermine Trump's desire to return to presidency. He still has a base, but you attack his wealth including his crony's, and to try to make his candidacy financially unsustainable. Noam Chomsky said how much money you can throw at election campaigning is what ultimately dictates whether you could win or not.

[–] Son_of_dad@lemmy.world 8 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Noam Chomsky also told us to mind our own business and shut up, when asked about his dealings with Jeffrey Epstein.

[–] TankovayaDiviziya@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I thought you were joking. But after Googling, he had some associations with Epstein 😲

[–] Son_of_dad@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

Many people have met Epstein etc and have done nothing shady, those people generally come out and say they only met him for dinner, etc. Chomsky didn't say "I barely knew him and met for dinner" or some defense. When asked, Chomsky said "none of your business what my dealings with Epstein were" which to me is very damning

[–] homesweethomeMrL@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

You’re not wrong, but context is important. Jerkass interviewer trying to force a gotcha moment runs with “he told me to shut up! Omg guilty”

Epstein sleazed around a LOT of places, notably science and university circles. Bill Barr’s dad knows.

I prefer to bag on Chomsky for not supporting Ukraine.

[–] linearchaos@lemmy.world 5 points 9 months ago

Slight twist here He's not looking for the presidency. His goal is to get in disable the Justice Department and the Executive Department and turn it into a mini dictatorship. If he manages to get in he doesn't have any money problems anywhere.

To be honest, none of this is really hitting him anyway. He owes shit tons of money to so many people, He's just not going to pay any of them.

I also suspect he's able to work this in a way where campaign finance isn't quite as big of a deal. He already gets absolute free coverage for everything he does. If he didn't rally in campaign in every red state would that really affect his base significantly? If he did really would it change any significant number of mines that wouldn't vote for otherwise? The people who are or aren't voting for him at this point already understand his goals. He could probably rally these people's effectively on a YouTube video as he could in person

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 4 points 9 months ago

We was old, and needed the money...
