Bit unfair to include the Pacific Northwest in "area 51", IMO. Should have a little sliver up there that just reads "bigfoot territory" or something.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Bigfoot's an alien, close enuf

[–] IrateAnteater@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Also, you're not going to convince me that Portland isn't full of aliens trying to hide in pain sight.

Hiding from the boss cause they're smoking in the mail room.

[–] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 3 points 1 week ago

Would you like some more pour over?

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I thought it was obvious

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 28 points 1 week ago (4 children)

What the hell kind of hardcore geography class has you hand drawing the 48 contiguous states from memory?

[–] username_1@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 1 week ago

Depends on the expectations level. Maybe the goal is to recall names and overall positioning of, let's say, 10. That sounds doable.

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

My 7th grade geography class had a test where we drew in all the states and then had to label them along with the capitals. Bit of a pain at the time but ultimately knowing that geography in general has been somewhat helpful as an overall life skill.

[–] Vandals_handle@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

My eighth grade us history teacher gave quizzes like, you're in Oklahoma, go north two states and go east one state. What state are you now in and what is the capital? Don't remember capitals well but kept sense of geography.

[–] Ertain@feddit.online 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I think I've been in classes where I've had to memorize that stuff. TBH, there's probably a mnemonic to remember them all.

[–] SCmSTR@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

But did they have you draw them in? I remember having to remember them all when I was like 10. But just the names and their capitals. We did not have to draw them. That would have been a hilarious disaster.

[–] Ertain@feddit.online 2 points 1 week ago

Ah drawing them in. No, I didn't have to do that.

[–] wieson@feddit.org 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

In Germany, our 9th grade English class focused on American English. We did a test where we had to fill in all the states. But at least not hand draw.

I think most people would just combine the Area 51 and “Ohio” sections and just call it “corn”…

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (5 children)

We don't have much corn up in the PNW

[–] Hux@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

“Corn…and a bit of meth”, then.

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You could add "... and a bit of meth" to every place

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Now that's what I call Eastern WA

"Ohio" should be called "Chicago." So... why are that chick's eyes all swirly? Why does she have one sharp tooth?

[–] Hoimo@ani.social 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

She's a bit crazy, but in a good way. Sometimes she's madly in love for Roy, other times she's just mad.

Snaggletooth (though Mimi has more than one fang) is moe.

[–] krashmo@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Dutch seems oddly appropriate for an article about waifus

[–] _stranger_@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

I'm a little mad at how well that works.

[–] bad1080@piefed.social 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

how is south dakota north of dakota?

[–] username_1@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Where's the problem? South Dakota is South Dakota, not Souther than plain old boring Dakota.

It looks like the United States is wearing tighty whities

[–] eah@programming.dev 5 points 1 week ago (3 children)

As a Michigander, I can confidently say that this map is a capital crime in my state. Us and Ohio are mortal enemies. It's like labeling New Zealand "Australia".

[–] pech@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Though I think being lumped in with Ohio is much worse. 🤢🤮

[–] Shindo66@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

We dont really think much about you dontcha know

[–] hereiamagain@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

Right? Also, who knows the map well enough to define the edges of Michigan, remembering it's a mitten and not just a weird peninsula thing, but doesn't actually call it Michigan? It's one of the top 5 recognizable states.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Texas is way bigger than that. It goes halfway up Canada

Can you mark Portland Oregon and some parts of Colorado as “Good United States”

I would also accept Minnesota as a good state. I have nothing but respect for Minnesota.

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Portland, OR is pretty good. Bit wary to lump her in with the rest of the US though.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Can you mark Portland Oregon and some parts of Colorado as “Good United States”

No, but we can do "Raytheon Acres" in rainbow font.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Similar to Colorado, only some parts of Minnesota are good. South of Rochester and north of Fridley aren't great. Winona has some good, and Mankato is decent but never took part in the Anti-ICE push. Can't say much about the state west of Mankato though, too close to North Dakota for my tastes (/s). However, climate change discussion sans naming it is highly respected throughout the state, we love our nature.

[–] Treczoks@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

A rather comprehensive map of the US, indeed.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

I don't love being classified as Ohio, but the map seems pretty reasonable.

[–] NewSocialWhoDis@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 week ago

I personally believe that US Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some people out there in our nation don't have maps. And, I believe that our education like such as in South Africa and the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should—our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., or should help South Africa and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our children.

[–] Gladaed@feddit.org 3 points 1 week ago

Forgot about despair.

[–] YiddishMcSquidish@lemmy.today 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah, as someone in "Ohio" this tracks.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago (3 children)

No way Area 51 would be on a map because it's Top Secret! That's actually the state of "Las Vegas."

And Ohio is crazy, no way such a thing would really exist, it's just a meme. That's actually the state of "The White House."

[–] LovableSidekick@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I've seen many versions of this as, "How Europeans (or conservatives, liberals, etc) see America".
