I identify as braindead, your generalised labels offend me

[–] Agent641@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

Sorry for the microagression.

[–] lauha@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

What a no-brainer.

[–] flandish@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

hey you can’t use that word, only we can.

It's called ascites and looks like this

spoiler

And they do something called Paracentesis for it which looks like this and the amount of fluid that comes off is often somewhat of a "big fish story" for nurses similar to giant objects removed from rectums.

I have a friend in urology, who will occasionally talk about clogged... systems, and how much urine a person can hold. It's a surprisingly large amount, to the degree where they can't remove it all in one go because the drop of internal pressure will lead to a drop in bloodpressure.

So yes, you CAN pee yourself to death.

[–] Bluewing@lemmy.world 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They once drained nearly almost 2 liters out of me. The urologist was amazed that I didn't die. I've had two more laser procedures over the years and another one is scheduled next week. Self cathing multiple times a day for years sucks. But it is better than dialysis or dying.

Everyone loves them titties enough to have a whole month of awareness, but not many care about prostrate health. Get it checked regularly fellas! And pay attention to how you pee and how often. It can get bad enough that not even a little blue pill can save your love life.

That must have been a massive pair of balls then.

#pee comes from the balls

I think they did this on The Pitt. The alcoholic guy who was a "frequent flyer" (all the doctors and nurses knew him because he always had to come in and get that shit drained. Never stopped drinking).

Man that show is good.

[–] Apytele@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Have avoided it. I've had coworkers say it gave them flashbacks.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I can definitely see that. A testament to how well it's made imo

[–] Apytele@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

I just want scrubs but in Arkham asylum.

[–] Apytele@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Oh and fun fact, the professional way to say "frequent flyer" (for like written documentation or over the phone to other units and such) is "known / well known to me/us." So for instance "Mr Doe is well known to us from previous admissions to this unit with the last date of discharge being 3 days ago."

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't remember if I was quoting the show or just using my own wording there, but good to know.

[–] Apytele@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Oh no it gets flung around plenty in on-unit report and with your work besties. Some of it is commiseration about unpleasant patients, but it's also practically helpful to describe the background to float nurses or nurses new to the unit that the patient has some kind of long running problem whether it's financial or cognitive-emotional that's preventing them from managing their problems properly outpatient. But when you go to write that practical concept (of a patient who has a stable and predictable hospital course with a treatment plan that evolves minimally over multiple hospitalizations) you write "known to us."

Is that what a "beer belly" is?

[–] Apytele@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

Nah that's usually just because beer is liquid bread

[–] TheStaffmaster@lemmy.world 27 points 1 week ago (1 children)

so, a fact to consider: if you are fat, but you are a person who is on their feet a lot, you will never skip leg day, by definition.

I'm 5'6" have a 43" waist and am 100lbs "overweight." My legs look like I ride in the Tour de France everyday.

[–] fuckwit_mcbumcrumble@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Yeah I had some amazing calves from being so fat and just walking.

[–] rtxn@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

It'll completely fuck up your joints, though.

Source: am fat, lifelong cyclist, starting to get knee pains.

[–] TheStaffmaster@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

the unfortunate side effect of this is the random charlie horses when you just need to stretch after waking up. Those can fuck right the hell off.

[–] Inucune@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Magnesium supplement will reduce the occurrences.

[–] teslekova@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 week ago

Oh yeah, thx for reminding me, haven't taken some for a couple weeks, I am due again.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 17 points 1 week ago

Are you a liver or a deadite?

I've been watching a lot of Scrabble videos on YouTube. I don't know why as I've never played the game ... however, there's a phenomenon where the best players in the world are challenging really obvious words because of the quirks of the language.

In the video below you can see an example of where someone challenged "bus" because "bu" isn't one of the many two-letter words they've memorized and so pluralizing it is also invalid.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

This could be adapted into a strategy. Use some words that look like they follow some other pattern, deliberately pronounce them and volunteer a definition as if they do to prompt a challenge, basically gaslighting your opponent into losing confidence in challenging to allow you to start making up words later on. You'd basically convert Scrabble into poker lol.

Almost all my uncles are built like a candy apple. Not a single case of liver failure in the family. Sure heart issues are everywhere because they're built like fucking apples on a stick.

[–] ArchAengelus@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Diabetes does that too. Skinny extremities, thick/round torsos with almost no transition between the two shapes.

Most of the men in my mother’s extended family have diabetes, and look just like that.

[–] whoisearth@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 week ago

So many comorbidities. Alcohol also has a large play. Rich foods like red meat. My God it's such a long list.

People if you're reading this. Eat your veggies. Limit your red meet. Limit your alcohol. Fiber fiber fiber. Then pray you have good genetics lol

[–] exasperation@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's all related, though. Liver disease often causes cardiovascular issues, or vice versa. It's most pronounced in skinny people with fatty liver disease, who have a significantly elevated risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. Either way, the liver is immensely important for a whole bunch of metabolic functions, and cardiovascular health depends on all those metabolic functions working properly.

[–] whoisearth@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

Yup. I have fatty liver. It's hereditary. It's why I run and eat healthy.

[–] Xahvoc@lemmy.world 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Can confirm. Go to the doctor once in a while even if you have to just run from the bill. :(

[–] cannedtuna@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Pro tip: carry an apple and they cant legally bill you for health care.

[–] GonzoAtBarstow@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

So that's what Apple Pay is

[–] SkaveRat@discuss.tchncs.de 5 points 1 week ago

The problem is, that the apple field repels any doctors, so they can't do a checkup

[–] snoons@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 week ago

This one hurts, no matter if it's fake and/or gay.
