PSA (I honestly don't know anyone else who does this) the Android version of Firefox supports the uBlock origin extension (among other things) and plays YouTube videos perfectly fine.
I haven't had to watch a single ad on YouTube on my phone for years and well over a decade on any PC or Mac.
There's also LibreTube and Grayjay, which don't show ads at all anyway, and also come with a skip button that turns on for in-video sponsor ads / asking you to like and subscribe.
+1 for Grayjay, not the most user friendly out there, but once you get it setup it's really good!
Orion browser on iOS also supports uBlock origin, for those in that ecosystem
How do you stop the YouTube app from trying to force open?
Assuming Android, for me the following worked:
- Go to app info.
- Open 'Set as default'.
- Turn "Open supported links" off.
Though I'd wager that the above may be variant dependent.
Do you have the ability to Force Stop and Disable it in your app settings?
You should be to copy paste any youtube link into your Firefox browser.
quick guide, using LibreTube :
Tap for guide

Get an OS that doesn't fill your phone with unremovable bloat ware. You can also turn off opening links in apps in the Firefox settings, or install NewPipe and make that the default app for YouTube links.
I'm using Firefox with ublock on android and also Firefox klar (as default for links) but for YouTube I use newpipe. No ads but occasional blocking but I really don't care.

I mean it's not only ads but the other lists against popups and other annoying stuff too.
"but Google is where the internet is? Don't delete my internet!"
I do use Firefox (laptop) and NewPipe (phone), but my PS5 is the main device I use for streaming when I want to watch stuff with my girlfriend. No way to block ads on PS5, so I'm telling myself that I do it for the streamers (they gotta eat, too).
You guys see ads?
You guys still watching youtube?
I tried peertube but there’s no content
I tried peertube but the instance I want to sign up for still hasn't reviewed my application.
Tried piracy?
Because you insist on using Chrome and can't install Ublock Origin and Sponsorblock.
The self-flagellation continues.
Actually I use Waterfox with both, and ProTube on mobile, but sadly that doesn’t work on my shitty Roku TV
Wasn't really directed at you, more at the generic user bitching about ads portrayed in the meme.
Install Downloader (or similar), then use that to find and install SmartTube. It's basically Revanced optimized for TVs.
I use uBlock on PCs, Revanced on the phones, and SmartTube on the Firesticks.
Just be grateful that you don't have to pay for the privilege of watching ads... yet.
Cable TV, I'm looking at you!
Cable TV and some streaming services, I hear.
It's 3 ads now
Lols in adblocker.
This. Firefox w/ Ublock Origin + SponsorBlock + DeArrow + Enhancer for YouTube on desktop, YouTube Morphe on Android, SmartTubeNext for the TV. I never have to watch a YT ad ever.
Laughs in uBlock Origin
I haven't seen an ad at any video content (or most other content tbf) for ages. My Plex share doesn't have any, and my browsers are cleansed by digital fire of this filth. I can't deal with the permanent sensory overload it causes.
You kinda have to be a psychopath to take a Laptop to the kitchen, unless you place it super far away from everything and always wash your hands before typing that keyboard will get super nasty. The kitchen is Tablet territory because you can just wipe it clean after.
I think they mean like laptop on the table and you’ve cooked and you’re sitting down to eat.
My kitchen and living room and bedroom are all the same room
I don't own a tablet and don't see a reason to buy one for this non-issue.
Obviously you place it where it doesn't get dirty, and you start a video that is long enough before starting to cook, so you don't have to touch it until you're done.
Don't forget you need Sponsor Block too for in video ads
I'm on my brother's YT premium.
Realistically its going to be some a small handful of good videos followed by me navigating what seems like an endless ocean of slop, giving up to then stare at my phone and read Lemmy.
...running for up to five minutes each.
