If you're not using Firefox or a fork of FF with uBlock Origin and still complaining about ads: What's wrong with you?

[–] Zer0_F0x@lemmy.world 55 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (5 children)

PSA (I honestly don't know anyone else who does this) the Android version of Firefox supports the uBlock origin extension (among other things) and plays YouTube videos perfectly fine.

I haven't had to watch a single ad on YouTube on my phone for years and well over a decade on any PC or Mac.

[–] asdfasdfasdf@lemmy.world 13 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

There's also LibreTube and Grayjay, which don't show ads at all anyway, and also come with a skip button that turns on for in-video sponsor ads / asking you to like and subscribe.

[–] kernelle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 weeks ago

+1 for Grayjay, not the most user friendly out there, but once you get it setup it's really good!

[–] TheseusNow@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

Also revanced on android

[–] Shartyfartblast@piefed.zip 5 points 2 weeks ago

Orion browser on iOS also supports uBlock origin, for those in that ecosystem

[–] Strider@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I'm using Firefox with ublock on android and also Firefox klar (as default for links) but for YouTube I use newpipe. No ads but occasional blocking but I really don't care.

I mean it's not only ads but the other lists against popups and other annoying stuff too.

How do you stop the YouTube app from trying to force open?

[–] 8uurg@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

Assuming Android, for me the following worked:

  • Go to app info.
  • Open 'Set as default'.
  • Turn "Open supported links" off.

Though I'd wager that the above may be variant dependent.

[–] Sawblade02@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

Ahh thanks, that was driving me mad opening links and somehow defaulting to the unremovable app instead of FF.

[–] Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

This seemed to work, thanks!

[–] pticrix@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 weeks ago

quick guide, using LibreTube :

Tap for guide

[–] original_charles@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Do you have the ability to Force Stop and Disable it in your app settings?

You should be to copy paste any youtube link into your Firefox browser.

[–] Karjalan@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I haven't checked if there's a way to automate the links opening in FF instead of YouTube app but I've been copy pasting into FF personally

[–] Denjin@feddit.uk 4 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Get an OS that doesn't fill your phone with unremovable bloat ware. You can also turn off opening links in apps in the Firefox settings, or install NewPipe and make that the default app for YouTube links.

[–] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 1 points 2 weeks ago

or install NewPipe and make that the default app for YouTube links.

tat seems to have been stopped ? all of a sudden it opening links in the YT app, and bypassing Newpipe, started about 2 weeks ago. I was shocked by the ads. How to change it back ?

[–] noxypaws@pawb.social 2 points 2 weeks ago

don't install the youtube app?

[–] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago) (2 children)

Android has a full app replacement. It's called ReVanced. Use version 20.31.42 rather than the latest, though. The latest has been partially broken by YouTube and freezes often.

[–] Zer0_F0x@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

I just use YouTube for watching videos on my phone every now and then. Works perfectly in Firefox with ublock for that, no need to install anything additional

[–] debil@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Revanced is dead, use Morphe.

[–] wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

"but Google is where the internet is? Don't delete my internet!"

[–] rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I do use Firefox (laptop) and NewPipe (phone), but my PS5 is the main device I use for streaming when I want to watch stuff with my girlfriend. No way to block ads on PS5, so I'm telling myself that I do it for the streamers (they gotta eat, too).

[–] AVincentInSpace@pawb.social 1 points 2 weeks ago

bold of you to assume youtube is paying the streamers

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)
[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Entertainer is not a legitimate profession?

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

vtubers aren't real people they're computer programs

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Even if that were true, and it's not, there's a ton of streamers that aren't vtubers.

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

if they're on the computer they're a vtuber

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

No. Vtubers use a digital puppet rather than their own face/image, often for physical appeal but also privacy or just as a gimmick to stand out. It's a specific thing.

Alright you're not interested in things like "truth" or "good-faith conversation", peace out.

Every conversation is a contest and I'm gonna win

We have an ancient Roku stick that we only use for YouTube. A pie hole is on my list of projects to do but other projects keep cutting in line.

[–] Rusty@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

I have a Roku tv and I'm using PlayLet app for YouTube. It blocks ads and seems to be integrated with SponsorBlock. I don't see any ads, but I haven't tested the SponsorBlock, the videos I watch don't have sponsored segments.

[–] nuko147@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Propably you are either an iphone user, a shallow consumer, an instagram doomscroller or just too old.

Or you use youtube in TV.

So 90% of the people.
