Okay, but if your cyperpunk RPG has "d20 plus modifier vs target number" action resolution, 4-8 ability scores, skill bonuses, feats, classes, races/ancestries/backgrounds... You're going to need to explain how it's NOT like D&D. And if you proceed to describe PbtA, I will laugh at you.

I won't shame you for being like D&D. I will shame you for pretending you're not.

PbtA

Pathfinder, but towards Argentina?

[–] dreadbeef@lemmy.dbzer0.com 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

No I think viking hippie was right

[–] dreadbeef@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago

He's close: Pathfinder, but towards Albania.

[–] Tlaloc_Temporal@lemmy.ca 14 points 3 days ago

Peanut butter the Archmage?

[–] Hegar@fedia.io 43 points 3 days ago (2 children)

It depends what you mean by "like d&d". I've heard the phrase is used by different groups to mean:

  • Has a generic fantasy setting
  • Has similar mechanics to d&d
  • Has bad mechanics
  • Has dice mechanics
  • Is mostly about fighting
  • Is a trad game
  • Is not a story game
  • Is an RPG
  • Is not cool
[–] AzuraTheSpellkissed@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 3 days ago (1 children)

FYI your line breaks get collapsed. Don't worry, it's still comprehensible. Formatting tip: bullet lists would've worked here. Alternatively, for a single line break you can end the line with 2 spaces or a backslash (\)

[–] Hegar@fedia.io 14 points 3 days ago

Thank you! Must be an mbin/lemmy diference cause it was correctly formatted for me. I just made it bullet points so it's clear for all.

[–] Susaga@sh.itjust.works 11 points 3 days ago

For me, at least, "like D&D" can mean a lot of things. There are some games where you can tell their starting design point was just D&D, and everything else is either a tweak, a replacement or an addition. It doesn't matter what gets changed, so long as it's obvious what it was changed from.

The Fantasy Age system does a lot of things differently, but you can still tell they were working with D&D as their base design. You roll 3d6, but you still add your ability (and a skill bonus if you have the skill) and compare it to a target number.

[–] rabidhamster@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 2 days ago

That's why a proper cyberpunk RPG needs to be entirely D6. So many D6s that you need both hands to roll them all, and a baking sheet to keep them from rolling off the table.

[–] Maxxie@piefed.blahaj.zone 16 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (5 children)

nah its just piles and piles of d6s and 9 in-game seconds of combat take 3-4 hours of irl time (and 2-3 months off GM lifetime) guess what are we playing 😌

[–] uid0gid0@lemmy.world 1 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago) (1 children)

I want to throw a frag grenade into a 4m x 4m room that has two adjacent exterior concrete walls, one interior wooden wall and and another interior wooden wall that has the physical barrier spell cast next to it (mostly to block a door but it covers the whole wall). How much damage will the two orcs in the room have to soak? Assume the grenade lands in the middle of the room. One orc is in the corner of the two concrete walls, the other is next to the wooden wall without the barrier. . DV 18P(f) AP -5 BLAST -1/m. Edit: forgot to include the barrier was cast at force 5

[–] Maxxie@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

I don't see the map but I'll assume there's 1 interior wall and 1 physical barrier between the orcs and the grenade.

End of the turn, it explodes. Starting damage is 18p.

First the blast meets the Physical Barrier spell with 5+5+5 resist pool (5 structure 5 armor and +5 from frag grenade's AP which is actually positive rather than negative). Roll, 5 damage down, 13 to go. The barrier sustains more damage than it has structure and winks out, the mage gets it 2 sustain dice back.

The interior wall, 1+2+5. The orcs are lucky, another 3 damage down and 10 to go. The wall turns into wood chips and glue.

Blast weakens as it travels 1 meter, 9 damage.

These orcs weren't born yesterday and wear armor vests, they have 6+5=11 armor, which is more than grenade's 9 so it turns from physical to stun. 5 body + 11 armor = 16 resist pool, one takes 4 stun the other 5, both manage to stay on their feet.

The blast gets to exterior walls with 10+21 resist pool, shreds the wallpaper and doesnt do any structural damage (21 armor > 9 damage, turns to stun, wall doesnt care)

The blast is absorbed, because naturally we not crazy enough to play with chunky salsa rules and we want this combat to end somewhere before 4am.

next turn.

[–] uid0gid0@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago) (1 children)

I don't think the AI understood that the orcs are in the same room as the grenade, and it is only 2m from any wall when it goes off. Plus chunky salsa is the whole reason to specify what the walls are made of so failure all around.

[–] Maxxie@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 20 hours ago

you do actually need to specify regardless, brick and wood have different structure\armor values.

what ai fam this is straight from the dome piece.

[–] spittingimage@lemmy.world 20 points 3 days ago (2 children)

No need to guess - it's Shadowrun, chummer.

[–] Maxxie@piefed.blahaj.zone 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)
[–] skulblaka@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Shadowrun pitches d6's like Warhammer does and is the only RPG I know of that uses them so egregiously

[–] Maxxie@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 2 days ago

We've been playing for years and dropping 30+ is totally normal at our table, 40+ if someone went overboard with dermal armor or if your APC just collided with an earth spirit

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 11 points 3 days ago

Specifically 2nd edition

The d20 System, used as the basis for D&D 3rd edition, was in fact explicitly made to accommodate different settings and additions.

[–] NathanRanch@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 days ago

Og cyberpunk used a d10

[–] alsimoneau@lemmy.ca 7 points 3 days ago (4 children)

D12 is objectively the best dice and I need to find a system that'll let me use them more.

[–] uid0gid0@lemmy.world 1 points 21 hours ago

SWADE rolls lots of d12s at higher advancement levels.

[–] StupidOriginalName@lemmy.world 12 points 3 days ago

Daggerheart is a 2d12 system for players, but it remains a d20 system for GMs

D4 is objectively the best because you can use them as dice and weapons.

This is exactly how i feel anytime i hear the phrase souls-like

[–] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)
[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 3 points 2 days ago

Bah! Dark Souls isn't a souls-like!

It's a Dark-like! 🤦‍♂️

[–] Notyou@sopuli.xyz 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (2 children)

Same. I feel souls-like now just means kinda hard bosses and you have to run back to your corpse or else you lose your money.

[–] skulblaka@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I find it's more that anything with a stamina bar and a dodge roll gets labeled as "souls like"

[–] Susaga@sh.itjust.works 2 points 19 hours ago

Trust me, you don't need a stamina bar for people to do that. But those people are wrong and we should not humour them.

[–] hyperencabulator@lemmy.today 3 points 2 days ago

So Shovel Knight is a souls-like, understood.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

D20 Modern is basically D&D-like cyberpunk, so it's kind of a fair question. 🤷‍♂️

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I gotta say, I've never actually found a D20 Modern game in the wild.

No shortage of WoD, GURPS, Call of Cthulhu, Alternity, Shadowrun, Battletech, Kids on Bikes, Big Eyes Small Mouth... But I've never seen a D20 Modern at an actual tabletop before. Might have just been on the wrong side of the GenCon convension floor. But I've been around playing these games for a while. I've never actually seen anyone do it.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Try a masochism convention.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Thanks, I'll give it a shot.

[–] Aeri@lemmy.world 5 points 2 days ago

Look I'm sorry that this is the way that it is but D&D is kind of the core template for the lens for by which I perceive tabletop role-playing games.

[–] arctanthrope@lemmy.world 48 points 3 days ago (3 children)

honestly, this is fine. I think people within the rpg space forget that the general public largely has no idea that the space exists. they have never heard the term "tabletop role-playing game," but they have a vague impression that "d&d" means nerds sitting around rolling dice and pretending to be in a fictional scenario, so if your game is anything like that, "kinda like d&d" is a fine descriptor for that audience

or as the famous tweet says: "guy who's only ever seen Boss Baby watching a second movie: kinda getting Boss Baby vibes." inaccurate or ridiculous as it may seem, if that's the only exposure someone has to the concept of a "movie," then using that as a jumping-off point to explain that other stories of different types can be told by pre-recorded moving images is still useful. you have to introduce the medium in general before worrying about genres within the medium, or works within the genre

[–] CombatWombat@feddit.online 16 points 3 days ago (1 children)

For sure. If someone says "like d&d?" I take them to mean "is that a ttrpg like d&d is a ttrpg?" and not "is it a ttrpg that is similar to the ttrpg d&d?"

the general public largely has no idea that the space exists

Idk, man. Like, 20 years ago? Maybe.

But not knowing about D&D in the modern day feels a bit like saying you don't know about the NBA or you've that you've never heard of Disney World.

you have to introduce the medium in general before worrying about genres within the medium

I think the thing that makes "Like D&D" annoying is that it's really the only easily accessible TTRPG franchise. It feels like you're watching the Olympics while people keep shouting "Oh, so how is this different from Football?" at every event.

[–] Wfh@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

JUST BECAUSE IT'S BASED ON THE D20 SYSTEM DOES NOT MEAN IT'S LIKE D&D BRIAN

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

sigh

I take off my robe and wizard hat.

[–] mr_account@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

As someone who recently started a GURPS game set in Cyberpunk 2077... nope! Been some really rough spots introducing it to my table that's been running Pathfinder for over a decade

[–] StoneStar@feddit.nl 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Has it been a fun campaign? Been kind of scared of GURPS but I love the idea. Tried Fate as universal system but it's not that great.

[–] mr_account@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Only started a couple weeks ago so we've had 2 sessions. Too early to tell, but it's taken me a LOT of work to read through several books, decide which rules to go with or ignore, make a document to copy those rules to, and go through the character creation. And even then, I screwed up several things. I feel like it's probably a good system, but the barrier to entry is something the writers need to work on substantially. If my game takes off, I'm planning on posting my document to the GURPS sublemmy, but I don't have an ETA.

I did design the tutorial mission on the first level of Hotline Miami though.

Same message without the TERF taint.

So, like Gamma World?
