there are plenty of houses like this and it sucks cause its loud and your kids will develop asthma from being near to too many lanes of traffic during critical phases of development

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 44 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Not just asthma either. Rates of cancer go up by 10% within 50m of busy road.

[–] SacredExcrement@hexbear.net 34 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Pretty sure I also saw a study which noted living within a certain distance of high traffic roadways increased odds of developing dementia

[–] whiskers165@hexbear.net 23 points 3 days ago (1 children)

My grandma lived by a highway and got dementia

I lived within a stones throw it i285 in Atlanta for a few years and I felt like it was killing me. Dumb with brain fog, some many health problems from dermatological to cardiovascular.

I had a white car and I I left it parked in my car port for a few days whatever side was facing the highway would develop a layer of black soot on it. Tire dust, brake dust, whatever other awful toxic VOCs and heavy metal particulate emissions.

It was hell. I have a hand drawn map of Atlanta and I marked that house in the map with a little skull, death spot.

Cursed neighborhood on a civil war battle field, civil war theme subdivision with civil war theme for street names. When I first moved I was excited my drug dealer worked out of a house one street over. Dude got kidnapped and murdered right as I closed on the house.

In summation fucked up things are happening under the power lines by the interstate. A commuters dream my ass, how about a human nightmare?

[–] tripartitegraph@hexbear.net 9 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Lived for a couple years within a few hundred feet of an interstate in tennessee. It was horrible; I could tune it out a lot of the time, but all the semi-trucks with their Jake brakes were terrible.
Then the company that owned the billboard right between our street and the interstate clearcut ALL the foliage around it. Just made things louder🙃 and I didn’t even really think about the increased pollution, I’m sure that has harmed me

[–] Fossifoo@hexbear.net 6 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Wow, I have never heard of Jake brakes before. Somehow USians never fail to take a horrible thing like trucking and make it far worse for everyone. I can't even imagine for that being remotely legal or acceptable in Europe.

[–] tripartitegraph@hexbear.net 5 points 3 days ago

Some cities outlaw the usage of these types of brakes within city limits (in my experience enforcement is kinda lax, but I think it does make some difference) but this city did not. They also didn’t have those sound-dampening walls you find in a lot of places. Living there was a real psychic attack lmao

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 4 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Wait, trucks in Europe don't use that kind of brake? Isn't that unsafe?

[–] Fossifoo@hexbear.net 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

No, that's what brakes are for? Also, a usual motor brake with a dampener (not the r word) works just fine.

Seems we actually have rules that specify the speed you are allowed to drive downhill and what system has to be on board and don't leave it to the "free market" to come up with the cheapest but otherwise most annoying system possible. Who would have thunk.

Edit: looks like Austria came up with a noise level of 80dB (like a lawn mower, so still fairly loud) first and truck manufacturers adapted

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

But when regular brakes fail you can't stop. When semi truck air brakes fail it forces the truck to stop.

[–] Fossifoo@hexbear.net 1 points 2 days ago

Well, we have mandatory, in depth checks every year for trucks and afaik, downhill mountain streets have "breaking ramps" with sand etc. Then again, I'm living in the northern European flats, so I might have no clue but I think accidents because of failing downhill braking are very rare.

[–] Ishmael@hexbear.net 5 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I used to live right on a major road in a major US city. I remember when COVID hit I couldn't sleep because all of a sudden the constant hum of traffic was gone. When I moved to a quiet neighborhood I found I feel a lot more rested after the same amount of sleep.

[–] FnordPrefect@hexbear.net 62 points 3 days ago (2 children)

smuglord Yeah, I'm into 15 minute cities. It should take at least 15 minutes of highway driving to get from anything to anything else.

replace driving with biking/walking and its actually a good idea

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 49 points 3 days ago (5 children)

i guess AI has been designing America for a while, because this is how an absolute shitload of it looks.

also, merging at a 90° angle from a gravel driveway onto a busy 50+ mph road is so badass that everyone should have to do it at 6am, 5 days a week, for 30 years in an SUV.

i recommend kicking off the playlist with THIS and remember that Vince Neil killed a guy while driving & coked out of his mind, but only did 30 days.

Cartesian country, cartesian roadways

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 22 points 3 days ago

You didn't turn your front yard into a highway on-ramp? Skill issue smuglord

Nikki Sixx wrote that one after ODing on heroin, waking up in the emergency room, ripping all the IVs out of himself, hitchhiking home while covered in his own blood, and going right back to his heroin bender.

The title is surprisingly literal.

[–] homosapien@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

ripping the IVs? how was he still alive 😬

Engine braking into a living room near you.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 24 points 3 days ago

I live nearish to an interstate, it's about half a mile away and you can hear the jake breaks all damn day long. To be that fucking close near to that would be maddening.

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 35 points 3 days ago (1 children)

let-em-cook Maybe AI boosters should be made to live directly on the side of interstate highways

[–] CPMSP@midwest.social 13 points 3 days ago

And immediately adjacent to data centers.

[–] FALGSConaut@hexbear.net 42 points 4 days ago

Not even going to bother pointing out the laundry list of reasons this is a stupid fucking idea. This case of terminal car brain can live in an atmosphere of engine exhaust, tire particles, and constant traffic noise while I live in my quiet apartment that's a 5 minute walk through a park to my local transit station.

[–] Kefla@hexbear.net 26 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Fun fact: prolonged exposure to noise pollution has a severe and well documented negative effect on quality of life

[–] Hexamerous@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Especially for neurodivergent people.

I have a treat-boy gamer/music neighbor that put up a sound-bar on the wall. Just endless low-frequency vibrating "pressure" pushing through everything. It's not "loud", it's just outside the hearing range or something, like the ear is trying to focus on it constantly and never finding it.

I need to move to a cabin.

So, I shouldn't keep a server running 24/7 in my bedroom?

[–] EveningCicada@hexbear.net 35 points 4 days ago

Sometimes when I'm riding the bus in the countryside and pass some cute little house I often think to myself "What a nice little place. I'd love to live there!" but then a few seconds later I realize that from the house's perspective it's living right next to some noisy 50mph road

Car commercials should be filled with loud ass road noises because fuck the car companies and fuck ad men, that’s why.

We have that in some parts of Puerto Rico... don't ask me how many cars wrecked and people killed.

I have a normal road by my house and that alone makes me want to showcase adventure time.

[–] nasezero@hexbear.net 13 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

This is so ridiculous. You'd have to drive down to the nearest exit to turn around and go the other way! Obviously the more efficient placement for a commutemaxxer's home is in the dead center of the highway median. And cutouts are for cowards, just pave over every square freedom inch in case you wanna park some extra cars!

Laughing at the lane being almost wide enough for a second truck

When I was 16 I got into a wreck turning out of a gravel driveway not unlike this because I was struggling to shift gears and accelerate fast enough as I entered the roadway. Got hit from behind by a box truck causing my car to spin out into a roadside ditch. Was thankfully uninjured, but it sucked and id describe it as very far from my personal dream. (Truck just kept driving, and me and my friends dad were able to get the car drivable after pulling the car out of the ditch and cutting off the mangled rear bumper with a sawzall, so I was driving the car again later that day. These details are of course utterly irrelevant)
