The perpetual right-wing grievance complex
Someone tells a Nazi that they're not 100% accurate (usually not even in a scolding way) and the Nazi fumes and takes it back to their little fortress to ruminate angrily forever
Bingo. The little fortress they take it back to is 4chan, where they've all convinced each other, and the internet at large, that reddit is leftist.
I wouldn’t say Reddit is left-wing. I’d say it’s centrist and establishment coded.
To chuds on Twitter and Nazis on 4chan, that might as well be communism. That’s mostly where the idea that Reddit is left-wing comes from....if you ask me.
Reddit is well represented by people like Destiny: someone who votes for Democrats, supports neoliberals + Israel and uses slurs.
The centre and establishment are right wing.
You are right....but I don't think that's how it's viewed by the majority of people in the USA. The Democratic Party is considered centrist or even left-wing by many Americans. Someone correct me if I'm completely off here. I'm not American but that's at least the impression I've gotten.
EDIT: Of course I would consider the Democratic Party right-wing and the Republicans far-right but I don't think that's a particularly mainstream position.
People think libs are “left wing” because they don’t know jack shit
I think a lot of it stems from the early years of Reddit when leftism (in the popular conscious) was associated with pushback against evangelical cultural conservatism. So the Reddit atheism plus r/trees image (this was also long before the legalization wave) gave it this reputation of leaning left. As is wont to happen, the reputation lives on long after the stereotype has ceased to be relevant (see: conservatives that still think San Francisco is some den of unwashed, unreformed hippies).
Made me think, reddit was only ever as left-leaning as 4chan was.

Same underlying attitude but with an “adults in the room” veneer
conservatives that still think San Francisco is some den of unwashed, unreformed hippies
That sort of view of SF always strikes me as so strange because the Bay Area must be one of the richest areas in all of human history. But rightwingers see a photo of a young woman with purplish hair or a photo of the poverty of the Tenderloin and say: Yeah, that's what I expected. What a shit hole.
Because the average person thinks liberal = left wing
I mean that’s what it boils down to, right?
In the USA, liberalism is largely equated with leftism. In other countries, there are actual left-wing parties, groups and movements, while liberals are usually recognized for the weird centrist lil freaks they are.
Not in the USA though.
Not just the US anymore. In the UK Labour are unironically referred to as far left whereas the Greens are treated like the Bolsheviks, Black Panthers, ANC, the CPC, Juches, and Fidel Castro all rolled into one.
I agree with you. Its just the USA to me feels like most extreme version of liberal = leftist. Despite not having any leftwing party
The most confusing thing is that liberals in Europe will claim that European liberalism is something completely different than US liberalism. Then you look at the programs and it looks like they google translated the Hillary Clinton platform or something. Of course what they mean is that they don't do CRT and hate trans people but that's again not much different from US liberal politics.
to be fair, they were originally more leftist, but the american government inflicted political violence on them to force them to go more to the right and the epstein class is continuing that tradition.

bog standard reactionary persecution complex stuff: I can't openly drop n bombs, literally 1984
from parents of children who integrated into cities and held mildly progressive views (gay marriage) at the time.
in actuality reddit was always libertarian (rightwing one at that^1^), which got corpo-ed after trumpy 2016 campaign
^1^ weed, jailbait, ron paul, gay marriage are all consistent with right wing libertarianism, i only don't remember gun hogging being prominent
facebook was thought as leftwing in the 2009~2012 (round occupy), together with twitter
Twitter at least was popular with somewhat actual leftists when it was new, specifically with occupy, people could communicate about protests with burner phones and you could recieve feeds in text message form so it was good for mass communication before it got locked down.
Exactly, Reddit only looks/looked left wing/liberal in comparison to main stream western politics, it's always been 4chan libertarian with a (slightly) better face (I remember how people got upset over fucking jailbait being banned)
Nazis enjoy feeling oppressed. So they make up stories to tell each other about it for fun
Basically this
Back when I was the type of person who would spend time arguing on
a guy tried to argue that Reddit was a leftist hivemind because the top 2 posts of all time on /r/photos were of Bernie and Obama. I also saw someone try to argue that r/CTH and r/TheDonald held the same political beliefs because users from both would often show up in other parts of
.
Basically, it never made sense.
Most likely because reddit is used mostly by USians and Europeans and to them anything other than fascism and bombing brown children = left-wing
I think it used to pretty anti neocon 15 years ago. That's about it.
Reddit used to be techno-libertarian way back in the day with Ron Paul 2012 spam everywhere. Stuff like /r/jailbait was also a reflection of that techno-libertarianism. It's that plus the militant atheism plus a general disdain for Bush era evangelical neoconservatism that led to the (undeserved) reputation that persists to this day.
You have to be at least 13 to be on Reddit, so I’m not surprised it’s not seen as sufficiently right-wing.
The majority of users are from the US, the US's Overton window is shifted so far to the right that the right wing genocidal neo-liberals are considered 'left wing'(even by liberals themselves) because they're marginally to the left of the republicans on a few issues
The amount of liberals does probably outnumber the number of conservative users on there hence the site is seen as 'left-wing'
The nature of the upvote algorithm, and echo-chamber effect of sub does seem to either cause and/or make it appear as though the majority of users have the same views on whatever topics, hence 'hivemind'
because people think /r/politics is "left wing"
I’m going to be completely honest, most of the reddit that I see, as in the really mainstream ones and the niche left ones, have opinions that are far more left leaning than what I see out in the wild, in real life.
I think it’s good to have some perspective on how reactionary the American populace is.
simple: the smallest heartfelt, non-aryan thing in the world, what the enemy has called milksop, is a sign the communists have taken over and revolutionary terror reigns are immanent. unfortunately for every person in the world these chuds are wrong. it's just hypersensitivity to a thing they don't like blown out pf proportion to feed their victim complex
former right-wing MAGA influencer Ashley St. Clair talked about this on Matt Bernstein's podcast episode earlier this year, "I wanted to be a victim so bad" she openly admits at one point. sounds familiar, doesn't it? one of the thousand things the reactionaries constantly project onto other groups in their culture war.
Amerikkkan right-wingers really are terrified of everything, scared of their own shadows, and have that childish persecution complex shared with the bigoted """"Christians"""" which they form a perfect overlapping Venn circle with.
