Diminishing returns on wine. Have too much and you'll piss yourself at the table effectively raising the price per km traveled to infinity.
I remember this exact same post when Biden was president... oh wait, no I don't.

The problem isn't that prices are going up. The problem is we're not paid anywhere near what we should be.
AKA The rich get richer while the poor get poorer.
It's both. We're not getting paid the full value of our labor, annual wage cuts are the default, and the only safe ways to save require buying into that same system of oppression.
The problem isn't any of those things. The problem is that there isn't enough affordable housing, and not enough housing period. We're literally in a near-global housing crisis. Everything else would be fine if that wasn't the case.
Wages are double what they used to be when gas was $2/gallon. So $4/gallon shouldn't be a problem.
The problem is housing, followed by grocery. And in some areas, followed by energy.
Gas isn't even on the list. It only feels as bad as it does because of everything else.
Not that it couldn't be cheaper.
...And not like any country is selfless with their natural resources.
I don't strongly disagree; housing is one of those safe places to invest in our own oppression.

And also the system of global exploitation that gave us cheap goods because we oppressed the global south into accepting low wages (aka imperialism) has reached a point where the capitalists are extracting diminishing returns. This means they have to turn their gaze towards home and exploit us more in order to keep increasing their profit margins.

As much as it pains me to have this thought, there are adults running around today who were very small children in 2004.
For the damage it's doing, fossil fuels should be several times more expensive to compensate in climate change costs and reduce demand.
There should be a carbon tax, but whoever signs it will be the least popular president in history. One of the flaws of democracy is that sometimes the thing that really needs to happen is unpopular with the moronic citizenry that can't understand why it needs to happen.
There are countries who already do have a CO2 tax.

I had the same engine in a truck and a car. The car went 33% further per gallon.
A current model year prius is ~3,250lbs / ~1,500kg and only gets 54mpg highway - what normal sized cars are you thinking of that will get you 60mpg without hypermiling?
Diesel cars (not trucks) have done 60 highway mpg for 2 decades now. The Prius isn't a very efficient vehicle on the highway, it's better suited for urban driving where the electric motor and regen help save a bunch of fuel.
Yes, there absolutely are a small handful of diesel cars that get 60mpg or more stock! And if we're doing alternate powertrains, my EV gets an equivalent to ~130mpg. But since this conversation is about gasoline it's not really... relevant.
Also, what? The prius is an incredibly efficient vehicle on the highway. The 2026 prius averages 53 mpg city, 54 highway.

Pushing £2/litre here and I am still waiting for air quality to improve. Maybe £5/litre is necessary.
Higher prices for most with reductions on red diesel could possibly be a good compromise.

A gallon of petrol is a good use of $4 if you are going to have the pedo president burnt at the stake.
Where I live, gas is 2.28€/L, that's about $11.80/gallon, still people rather drive their car to work every day instead of riding the 2000€ eBike collecting dust in their garage, and they are 5km (3.1mi) away from work. I would argue has price is not expensive enough for them.
On the other hand, the student we have on part time, rides the train 2 hours to come, because it's too expensive for him to tank up his motorcycle.
