A documentary examining the Israeli military systems behind the mass killing of Palestinian civilians in Gaza received a record-breaking standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival on Thursday.

NAZA, directed by Israeli filmmakers Yuval Abraham and Rachel Szor, drew a record-breaking 24-and-a-half-minute standing ovation at its world premiere, the longest at Venice, according to Variety.

The reception surpassed the 22-minute ovation given last year to Kaouther Ben Hania’s The Voice of Hind Rajab, which tells the story of the six-year-old Palestinian girl killed by Israeli forces in Gaza in January 2024.

Is this another limited hangout slopumentary?

Like an IDF "whistle blowers" or whatever talking about "the really bad stuff" but it's just normal bad stuff and the tip of the iceberg like "I saw a soldier shoot a guy but it turns out he was unarmed... starts crying" and the reporter is looking concerned and empathetic.

We had some docuslop here in Sweden trying to make nerfed version of that UK Killzone Gaza. They gave children cameras (don't worry Israel don't shoot children or reporters) so they could film the day to day of just... running around trying to get food and water or visiting someone in a temporary hospital or whatever... No gore or interview with any IDF hostage survivor or people with missing limbs.

Supposedly to "humanize" Palestinians and "giving them a voice" but the vibe I got was more of a "war is bad and it really makes you think".

The film's title refers to a Hebrew military acronym for “collateral damage”, used in the film to describe estimates of civilians expected to be killed in a strike.

Abraham and Szor said the term obscures both the military’s advance knowledge of likely civilian deaths and the nature of the campaign itself.

FWIW the IDF are already complaining about it and denying its claims. I haven't seen the movie yet but I don't know that it's inherently bad and evil just cause israelis directed it and aren't dead or in jail (yet).

This documentary supposedly films Israelis talking enthusiastically about how they're committing a genocide and how this isn't a few bad apples. So it sounds more like it makes Israel look bad, rather than the whole "shoot and cry" song and dance they normally do. Or make them out to be "victims" of Palestinians, like those October 7th. documentaries about "poor smol bean concert goers who weren't doing anything next to the open air concentration camp."

Still wouldn't surprise me if there was zionism present in the film.

While defending the new Israeli-made film NAZA, documenting anonymous confessions by Israeli war criminals, Haaretz's Nir Hasson inadvertently captures the biggest problem with the film - it helps normalize an inherently racist and genocidal society. It helps whitewash Israel and mostly benefits Israelis - the perpetrators of the genocide, not its victims.
