I like doing this online quiz every once in a while (although the website has gotten much shittier over the past few decades.)

Got 123/197 today, those tiny west African countries and pacific island nations tend to get me.

All of them and identify them all on a globe (besides island countries cause we all know that's impossible)

All of them!

How many can I name correctly? Some of them.

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Damn I didn't realise it was timed. Trying to do all that typing on mobile was a bit slow, I only got to 80 before running out of time, and still hadn't done Europe and only started on Africa.

A bit rough they make you spell them all!

[–] gedfromgont@piefed.ca 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Well they have to unless they'd present you with a list of fake and real ones or something.

[–] Dave@lemmy.nz 1 points 4 days ago

Yeah true. Can't give you a list to pick from I guess haha, just annoying that I know the countries but sometimes can't spell them!

Oof, I used to be better. I didn't realise it was timed, and and number of them I knew but couldn't spell.

The last couple of times have had me wondering if I hallucinated the existence of the Philippines because I apparently don’t know how to spell.

ETA: like I immediately think for a minute it’s still like Guam and not its own thing?

My spouse is great at these. Her only blind spots are small islands in the Pacific and some down the Caribbean chain, and half of those she knows. I would bet the farm she could hit 150 named correctly on a map without breaking a sweat. Then place their flags and name capitals.

[–] tal@lemmy.today 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)
  1. Malta was driving me nuts; couldn't think of the name.
[–] gera@feddit.nu 1 points 3 days ago

and I forgot Austria of all places

It'll get easier with time.

Unforunately.

[–] urushitan@kakera.kintsugi.moe 4 points 4 days ago

And then harder with more time, as is tradition

124 before running out of time. Spent way too long trying to spell Phillipines and Liechtenstein, and ended up giving up. I think I would've ended up on 135ish maybe.

[–] DMCMNFIBFFF@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

over 150 in under 9 minutes.

[–] THE_GR8_MIKE@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Probably like 12 and half would be continents.

[–] Plum@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

167/197

I've got the continents down pretty well, but the islands always get me.

[–] bneu@feddit.org 2 points 5 days ago (2 children)

All. I played that quiz more than 30 times. A few days ago I played the flag quiz to refresh my memory.

Does some know of a good quiz about capital cities or big cities? That's something I like to learn

[–] LeapSecond@lemmy.zip 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Seterra has many games, including capitals and flags

[–] laut_sprecher@feddit.org 3 points 5 days ago

Seterra all the way!

[–] Redfox8@mander.xyz 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

You could try When Taken to really test your knowledge! Gets you thinking about more than just where the image is, but when also.

https://whentaken.com/?trk=public_post-text

[–] bneu@feddit.org 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

When Taken is a nice concept, but I have found a mistake once and lost a bit of trust in it. In the picture was a birth and death year of a person, but the photo was supposedly taken a few years before the person died.

[–] Redfox8@mander.xyz 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Interesting, I haven't played in while but only came across the odd national celebration, no birthdays. I'm not too surprised there may be mistakes. The computer 'ai' guess can be...how the hell can it figure that?!, so I assume it's created using the same programme.

[–] bneu@feddit.org 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I don't think they use a ai program for that, they probably just have a dataset with the pictures. Might even be a dataset for training ai.

The picture in question was from the AIDS Quilt when it was displayed in Washington D.C. in the 90s. So not even a very old picture

[–] Redfox8@mander.xyz 3 points 4 days ago

I put ai in ' ' as I assume it's generated automatically somehow. AI is just a somewhat a modern/newer version of computer generated/automated in general (colloquially speaking).

The date part is probably the most tricky one to add when making these, unless it's an accurate record, it could be an estimate anyway.

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Almost all of em, it's only because I forget the name of a few that I can't name them all. I can point out where they all are even when I can't put name to location.

I can name all of Europe, Asia, South America. The Caribbean, South Pacific and African islands/West Coast of Africa is where it gets tricky.

sporcle is a great place to try this out, best experienced with an ad blocked

[–] Bonifratz@piefed.zip 1 points 4 days ago

It's a bit of a hobby of mine, I also do lots of quizzes on jetpunk.com, so naming all countries of the world is actually very easy for me, with or without a map.

[–] daggermoon@piefed.world 1 points 4 days ago

All from memory:

Latvia, Canada, Mexico, Nigeria, Sudan, South Sudan, Congo, Egypt, South Africa, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Dominican Republic, Czechia, Australia, The United States, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Switzerland, Iceland, Argentina, Peru, Cuba, UAE, Haiti, Tonga, East Timor, Liberia, Paraguay, Hondurus, Panama, Japan, China, South Korea, North Korea, Iran, Greece, Italy, Germany, Austria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Cambodia, Moldova, Romania, Ireland, Palestine, UK, Poland, and Cyprus

[–] Pamasich@kbin.earth 1 points 5 days ago

I got 72 on that quiz just now.
