"Taxes are theft" bullshit grift spotted. Tapping the sign.

[–] CalemitousVariantK@lemmy.world 28 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Taxes themselves are not theft, but the misuse of those taxes (such as waging purposeless war, refurbishing your gifted airplane emoluments, funneling money to a family member's private business, putting public money into crypto scams, or vandalizing public monuments) is a kind of theft.

[–] DudleyMason@lemmy.ml 6 points 4 days ago

That's embezzlement from the treasury, which is different than pretending that taxes going into the Treasury is theft.

[–] Binette@lemmy.ml 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I don't think they were talking about taxes, unless I'm mistaken. It's obviously about wage theft, right?

Edit: Nvm I forgot taxes work differently in the US

[–] MrChewy@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Arguably, both the red and yellow can be theft at the same time

[–] DudleyMason@lemmy.ml 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

But in reality, community expenses don't pay themselves and only whiny lolbertarian babies think that taxes to pay for those things is theft, so it is "arguable", but making the argument says more about you than about taxes.

[–] MrChewy@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

I meant more so neutrally in the sense of people in general having subjective takes and experiences and as such neither chart being the objective universal truth. If in your view potatoes are disgusting and in mine they aren't and we replace 'potatoes' with [insert whatever thing we're talking about], it ultimatelly does come down to a personal view of things.

If taxes are our topic, I wouldn't think of the view on them as binary in the first place as either theft or not. Which government? How does the government handle said taxes, as in, what does it do with them? If it's a corrupt nation where most taxes go to middlemen and criminal politicians stuffing their pockets that put some taxes into community services symbolically to not be as blatant, yes - it is theft; if it's a responsible government actively trying to improve things and maintain what is already proper, then no, it isn't. And even then, taxes being stolen or not depends on how they're used by each government segment rather than the whole government as a whole - since it's not binary either theft or not.

[–] surewhynotlem@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

Yes, one could argue that. One could also argue the world is flat. Arguing is easy.

[–] SatansMaggotyCumFart@piefed.world 37 points 5 days ago (3 children)

Hey I'm okay with paying forty percent tax when it helps feed, clothe and shelter the needy and funds our universal healthcare.

[–] Quokka@quokk.au 23 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (2 children)

I hardly think a tradie should be hitting a 40% tax bracket, let the rich pay the high rates not the struggling workers.

[–] Einskjaldi@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Including property tax, sales tax, healthcare, it's not hard to hit 40 total

[–] Quokka@quokk.au 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

The mean annual wage for a tradie is $43K, which should put them in the 12% tax bracket.

So all those other taxes are adding up to an additional 28%? That’s a pretty unfair tax system for such low income earners.

[–] Einskjaldi@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

No. If you're doing 55 hrs with overtime you should be closer to 60k a year.

After the standard deduction, that'd still put them in the 12% bracket, even if they're single. And that 12% is just the marginal rate, not the overall rate.

If single person made $60k in 2025, and only got the standard personal deduction ($15,750), that deduction drops their taxable income to $44,250. Of that:
The first $11,925 is taxed at 10%, so $1,192.
The rest ($32,325 = $44,250-$11,925) is taxed at 12%, so $3,879.
Their total income tax is thus $5,071 (=$1,192+$3,879).
$5,071 / $60,000 = 0.08452, meaning they'd pay an effective tax rate of 8.452%.

profits steal from you and do none of those things

op image didn't say tax

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 1 points 5 days ago

If only that was what it was used for.

it's basically a stock photo. If someone used AI to make this, they're dumb as rocks.

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 17 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I don't see any signs of this being slop. Am I already losing my ability to tell?

[–] eatCasserole@lemmy.world 12 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I can never not upvote the never slop kitto, but after zooming in, I think this may actually be one of the original images that was stolen and fed to the slop machines.

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 2 points 5 days ago

It's gonna get hard telling original images that were bitcrushed by reuploads and ai images that look bitcrushed because of not enough passes.

[–] Cris_Citrus@piefed.zip 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The only part that looks a little odd to me is the plant on the left

[–] M137@lemmy.today 4 points 4 days ago

Wow, it's weird how that completely change my mind about it. It has several things that point to AI IMO. A lazily done background plant wouldn't have several of the odd details that it has, and all of those are common AI red flags. Lines "drawn" from an outside edge to an inside detail in a weird way is the most obvious one.

[–] DeckPacker@piefed.social 1 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I might be wrong, maybe thia style was stolen by AI and that's why it reminds me of it now.

Also, it seems a bit yellow, I think.

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 3 points 5 days ago

Maybe it's made out of styrene and OP left it out in the sun.

[–] Zarobi@aussie.zone 0 points 4 days ago

This reminds me of "out of context terrible WikiHow artwork" memes. Here's one I found randomly on their front page

[–] Objection@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 days ago

This meme predates slop.

[–] Twinklebreeze@lemmy.world 12 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Taxes aren't theft. They pay for roads and other services everyone uses. Framing them as they is right wing bullshit.

[–] Mongostein@lemmy.ca 8 points 5 days ago

Yeah but about the slush funds and ballrooms and wars no one wants? That part sounds like theft to me.

[–] not@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Ha! In Sweden it is 40 hours, and 55% stolen by the child eating pedophiles.

[–] ZC3rr0r@piefed.ca 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Unless you're in some crazy tax bracket, I'm fairly sure most Swedes don't pay 55% income tax.

I checked Skatteverket's calculator and if I state that I make 1M SEK per year (104k USD) the taxation rate is 33.8%. Heck, even at 10M SEK it's so only 50%ish.

[–] not@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That's the income tax. The employer also have to pay "Arbetsgivaravgift". Whenever something is bought there is a 25% VAT (except food which is taxed lower). Sometimes you have to pay taxes on the price where VAT is already added.

[–] ZC3rr0r@piefed.ca 1 points 4 days ago

These tax structures exist in the US and other places as well. Besides, the meme referred to income tax so the fact that other taxes exist isn't immediately relevant here.

And anecdotally, the overall cost of living was less for me in Sweden than it is here in Canada. Taxes don't tell the entire story.

[–] DarkFuture@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Hey, come on now. They aren't eating the kids. Just repeatedly raping them.

Hey there's a difference between eating a child and drinking their blood. When will the Poor's learn...
