Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. πŸ˜‡ Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. πŸ“½οΈ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. πŸ“‹ Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      βœ… Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. πŸ“¬ Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 πŸ–) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 πŸ–) will be removed.
  7. πŸ΄β€β˜ οΈ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      SΓ, por favor [Spanish/EspaΓ±ol]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Banned Artists

The following artists are banned from the community.

  1. Jago
  2. Stonetoss
  3. GPrime85

It should be noted that when you make reports, it is your responsibility to provide rational reasoning why something should be removed. Saying it simply breaks community rules is not always good enough.

Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)

It's called Maximum Overdrive.

Oh shit, SHARK CAR!

Y'know, I think I could believe that cars kill more people than sharks even at sea.

Christine (1983) rolls into the room.

[–] tacosanonymous@mander.xyz 4 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

And Maximum Overdrive too.

[–] FluidBeef@quokk.au 2 points 6 hours ago (1 children)

And Debbie Does Dallas

..wait, what were we talking about again?

I'm sure most people are aware that the difference in danger is quite large but maybe not just how absurdly large.

Sharks kill about 10 people per year.

For cars the number is 1,670,000 deaths. Every year.

As a point of comparison, in 2025, about 250k people were killed in armed conflicts, which was the highest number in decades.

A lot of people think it's weird to hate cars as much as I do. But they are quantitatively in a similar category as the Holocaust in terms of how many people they kill. From the perspective, it seems a bit crazy not to hate them.

While I don't disagree much, let's not be silly. The numbers need to be divided by hours of exposure.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 2 points 7 hours ago

I think both metrics would tell you different things. Even unadjusted it gives you an idea about which thing you should be concerned about addressing and reducing your own risk or the risk of those you care about.

Plus, I don't have exposure data like that to make the comparison. If you do then it would certainly be interesting to see.

[–] Azazel@lemmy.ml 2 points 7 hours ago

This was exactly my thought. Like I grew up by the ocean where lots of people swam and there were sharks. Did car deaths outnumber shark deaths? Of course. Was it 6 orders of magnitude as much? Not even close lmao.

[–] balsoft@lemmy.ml 9 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I want us to redefine "pro-life" to mean pro-urbanism, pro-renewables, and pro-universal-healthcare. Just those 3 things would make for such a dramatic increase in life expectancy and fall in child mortality, it's crazy.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 2 points 10 hours ago

Great idea!

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

Also, in both cases many more are killed by humans than the other way around.

[–] CombatWombat@feddit.online 11 points 11 hours ago

I am somewhat disturbed by how right you are about this. Car sales estimates are 90-100 million new cars per year, so assuming we're not putting 99 million new cars on the road every year, we're destroying a lot more than we're making. I'm not even gonna look at the numbers for sharks cuz I know it'll make me big sad.

[–] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 3 points 11 hours ago

And yet people think I’m crazy for hating people as much as I do.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 10 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I'd ask if you come from !fuckcars@lemmy.world but I think we both know the answer is yes.

Me too.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 8 points 11 hours ago

I've always felt this way but that community has been huge for making me realize that a lot of other people feel the same way too!

Did anyone else think this was going to be cows? (more people are killed by cattle each year than by shark attacks)

[–] neuromorph@lemmy.world 2 points 6 hours ago

moose jaws!!!

[–] RoidingOldMan@lemmy.world 17 points 11 hours ago (3 children)

Stephen King wrote this book and it was made into a movie and a Futurama episode.

[–] Vandals_handle@lemmy.world 6 points 11 hours ago

Stephen King wrote this short story and directed the movie it was made into.

Really? I must have forgotten the part of Christine where the car becomes amphibious!

Granted, it HAS been a few decades since I read it..

[–] marcos@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

Yeah, I tried searching for it, but all I got where some sites with "20 best ghost car movies of all times"...

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 3 points 8 hours ago

So it makes sense. In the Cars universe, everything seems to be build for human, but perhaps sentient cars started to kill off everyone and then live in that world.

[–] AviAdi@lemmy.world 6 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

FuckCars is spreading πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

[–] Wataba@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 hours ago

How repugnant.

[–] saltesc@lemmy.world 7 points 10 hours ago

I used to be surf patrol. Would explain it, "You're far more likely to die in the car on the way to the beach. If you survive that, odds are you drown before a shark is even in the area. So stay where I can see you and you might just get lucky one day."

Hippos kill a lot more people than sharks.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I'm frankly surprised that hippos kill ANY sharks tbh 🀷🏻

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

I'm not. IIRC they're technically herbivores, they just really fuckin' hate other creatures for some reason

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 hour ago* (last edited 1 hour ago)

Nah, they're just very territorial, protective of their young, and deceptively fast. Long as you steer clear, it's not like they're going to stalk you for several miles to kill you like a tiger might 🀷🏻

Last I checked, there's very little territorial overlap between hippos and sharks πŸ˜„

[–] CarbonIceDragon@pawb.social 6 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

I was just at an aquarium the other day joking that jaws would be a very different movie if you swapped out the shark design for, say, an epaulette shark. Would look too goofy to take seriously.

[–] schipelblorp@sh.itjust.works 6 points 11 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

You couldn't very well call it Jaws with choppers like that. Maybe Spots?

[–] Nasan@sopuli.xyz 3 points 10 hours ago

Jaws theme but all you hear is a rattly bass and the windows close to breaking

[–] DudeImMacGyver@kbin.earth 4 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Pretty sure they made that movie a few times.

Plus, there's that tire documentary called Rubber.

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Plus, there’s that tire documentary called Rubber.

They dramatized it a bit, but tires actually do kill a lot of people. Mostly by releasing toxic dust as they gradually wear down.

[–] DudeImMacGyver@kbin.earth 2 points 8 hours ago

Sometimes that, sometimes they fly off and hit people, sometimes they psychically destroy them.

[–] rslogix89@lemmy.world 4 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Gonna need a bigger car…

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 5 points 11 hours ago

And so goes the us automotive industry.

[–] Vandals_handle@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

Which boot you referring to?

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 11 hours ago (3 children)

The boot (trunk) of the car.

Also, there's a double entendre since "boot" is also German for boat. Triple if you find a way of making Das Boot relevant to the comic 🀷🏻

[–] Vandals_handle@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago

Boat, car trunk and foot ware. Isn't that a triple right there.

Full disclosure, I may of been dropped on my math cells as a child.
