Showerthoughts

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Emo Philips:

“Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, “Don’t do it!” He said, “But nobody loves me.” I said, “God loves you. Do you believe in God?” He said, “Yes.” I said, “Are you a Christian or a Jew?” He said, “A Christian.” I said, “Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?” He said, “Protestant.” I said, “Me, too! What denomination?” He said, “Baptist.” I said, “Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?” He said, “Northern Baptist.” I said, “Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?” He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist.” I said, “Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?” He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region.” I said, “Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879 or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?” He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912.” I said, “Die, heretic!” And I pushed him off the bridge.”

did it take him like half an hour to deliver that

[–] ChairmanMeow@programming.dev 4 points 14 hours ago

About 1:20, and the text above even missed the fundamentalist/reformer step: https://youtu.be/ANNX_XiuA78

[–] mappe@moplemmy.fyi 21 points 1 day ago

Only if he tells it right!

[–] arockinyourshoe@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Yes, but god, what a delivery!

[–] arockinyourshoe@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago

Tell that to my parents. Dad: Protestant Mom: Catholic

But I'm the black sheep for being an Atheist

[–] DonkeyStar@lemmy.world 7 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Reminds me of the Family Guy bit:

“I’m a Seventh Day Adventist! We believe all the same things you do, but the sabbath is Saturday!”

“WHAT?!”

[–] beejboytyson@lemmy.world 3 points 13 hours ago

"Hey, weren't you the Wako guys???"

[–] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 5 points 22 hours ago

I think it's more that people hate people of other beliefs that live near to them. And when politics gets mixed with religion and then there's some violence, that's when it becomes a real feud.

I mean would there be so much hatred between Catholics and Protestants in Ireland if the British weren't Protestant?

[–] Bristlecone@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

This is what I've been trying to convince my dad. He's Mormon and the modern Evangelical movement behind this fucjed up government couldn't hate Mormons more. I think because they are so similar they actually end up hating them more than people like atheists, but they are willing to work together to get rid of the other hated people before they turn on each other

[–] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Evangelicals believe in the trinity (Jesus being god) whereas Mormons believe Jesus was a prophet. In terms of religious doctrine Mormons and Evangelicals are planets apart.

[–] SirActionSack@aussie.zone 3 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Mormons and Evangelicals are planets apart.

Only from the inside. Compared to even other abrahamic religions evangelical Christians and Mormons are very similar.

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

Only from the inside.

Yep, as someone raised without religion they pretty all look like the same stupid shit. The differences in practice have a lot more to do with the culture of the area than the text of their books.

[–] schnurrito@discuss.tchncs.de 18 points 1 day ago

That has a name: narcissism of small differences.

Competition for membership and money. People changing from say christianity to islam or to buddhism is less likely, they’re outsiders and foreign, but not direct competitors. Making your version of Christianity more cult-ish by fomenting hatred of the similar competition to prevent people from leaving or losing church benefactors does the same thing.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Eh, I think protestantism and catholicism are actually pretty different. Even the local catholic churches can differ quite a lot between countries - e.g. Germany's catholic churches are generally a lot more progressive than those in Africa. And European lutheranism might as well be on a different planet compared to US evangelicalism.

[–] Brokkr@lemmy.world 20 points 1 day ago (2 children)

And to many people the differences between Judaism, Christianity, and Islam are negligible.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 9 points 1 day ago

Sure, it's a matter of what particular aspects of religion you care about, and Judaism and Islam aren't monoliths, either.

[–] Onomatopoeia@lemmy.cafe -3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Then they don't understand them at all.

There are very foundational differences between them.

I say this as an irreligjous person who's studied world religions.

They only appear similar when viewed through a very low resolution/highly abstracted perspective.

[–] thallamabond@lemmy.world 3 points 22 hours ago

As far as I'm concerned, Religions are categorized first by who their god is so I'd lump these and more together.

Abrahamic Religions: The most prominent Abrahamic religions are Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.[3] They—alongside Samaritanism,[4] the Druze faith,[5] the Baháʼí Faith,[3] and the Rastafari movement[3]—all share a common belief in the God of Abraham. Likewise, the Abrahamic religions share similar features distinguishing them from other categories of religions:[6]

There are 95 things that I would like to say on the matter. Give or take.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Could you list the number that are alike?

[–] akunohana@piefed.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm rather inclined to start with the 95.

Van your put them somewhere where most people can read them, like on the door of the church

[–] pHr34kY@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sports fans amirite?

Like, two massive fans of the same sport, but from a different city with a different team.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 2 points 21 hours ago

Or even worse, when there's two major teams in the same city ...

[–] Tudsamfa@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm pretty sure they don't if we define "hate" by things like Terrorism or Religious Discrimination instead of complaints at the BBQ, but sure, your local sect is so annoying.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 1 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago) (1 children)

Catholicism and protestantism have a long history of war and discrimination between them. It's arguable how much of that was actually about religion, but it certainly makes it easier to motivate the masses. It's less nowadays because most people in the west don't take religion seriously anymore, but I'd assume that US evangelicals still have strong opinions on Christians who believe the wrong thing. Not to mention all the Christians outside of the west (i.e. Africa, South America), who actually outnumber westerners.

[–] Tudsamfa@lemmy.world 1 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

I know about the 30 years war and whatnot, and it might have been necessary to at least mention the Troubles as a partially religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants that spawned the biggest terrorist attacks in the UK, or perhaps more noteworthy the relationship between Sunni and Shia Muslims and their majority countries...

But be fucking for real. If the West just doesn't care about religion any more, we wouldn't have religious discrimination. Do Catholics get more assaulted for their Religion than Muslims in the US? Are South American Catholics absolutely viscous when it comes to Christian Heretics but the same people are tolerant to Vodou? Are there any Evangelical Terror attacks in Kenya I missed?

You are denying reality justifying this.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 2 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 12 hours ago)

Compared to South American and Africa, yes, most western countries are very secular societies nowadays and organized christianity has heavily declined, even a lot of places in the USA are rather secular nowadays.

I'd argue that anti-muslim violence in western countries is motivated more by general xenophobia and racism than religion, similar to how German Nazis weren't motivated by deep religiosity when they genocided Jews.

[–] dharmacurious@slrpnk.net 6 points 1 day ago

"better a heathen than a heretic" is a refrain I have heard used without irony

[–] TheStaffmaster@lemmy.world 1 points 20 hours ago

TBF, the structural differences if the protestant faith and the catholic faith were viable at the start. The catholics had a reformation and because they actually looked at the protestant doctrines and were like "yeah, ya'know, fair" to a lot of them. Meanwhile, Protestantism got popular with the the elites because they misinterpreted Martin Luther's philosophy to basically say that just paying lip service to God can still get you into heaven and so they could save a bundle on tithes and treat faith a performance art. Which is how you got assholes like the Calvinists.

In case you were thinking I was feeding into the thesis of the thread, neither of them are wholly correct, which is true of most religions, but if you look at the them purely objectively, Catholicism is "more correct" than Protestantism, as Catholics at least expect their practitioners to perform "good works" in their communities as a requirement rather than a strong suggestion.

I wonder if Buddhist monks from thailand look at Buddhist monks from India like that Futurama Fry squint meme?

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago

They absolutely do.

[–] Smeagol666@crazypeople.online 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I think that the ridiculousness (ridiculosity?) of other's religions reflects the believer's own religion's absurdity, made especially worse, in my opinion, if it's only recognized on a subconscious level.

Like in the movie Fight Club when the narrator says he can't cry with another faker around.

[–] Zykino@programming.dev 3 points 1 day ago

I'm ont so sure about that. I think the dominant religion hate the miorities in history. Catholics did war on Jews, Protestants, Jews again and now they cannot stand Islam.

I just think clerical and political elites are afraid "the other" are coming for them. In other words this is racism.

[–] Solrac@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Abrahamic religions basically

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Nah it seems to apply in Asia as well. Just look at what the CCP are doing to the Tibetan Monks. And its not even the first time an emperor ordered a sect of Buddhist monks killed off.

[–] Drusas@fedia.io 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The CCP are anti-religion, not Buddhist.

[–] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 0 points 22 hours ago

Officially, yes but at least a third of the nation is secretly Buddhist and the CCP even have their own fake Panchen Lama working for the government.
